Good Morning. Jade has been pretty high since we went to .25 and am wondering if we can go back to .5 without having to do another curve? She's been through so much in the last week and I know getting poked every 2 hours stresses her our and stress seems to be a contributing factor to her UTI issues. I will get her Ultrasound early this week and of course will post. Paws crossed.

Stress is definitely a culprit of UTI in cats...my LM is proof of that!

I'd want a more experienced member to say for sure but based on numbers it looks like you'd be good for increase in my opinion...

It really does! LM...was dx with feline idiopathic cystitis with crystals and blockage long before FD...I read that all idiopathic means is they dont know why meaning stress. He has always been a pretty skittish boy...so seeing a cat out window roaming could set him off...too many new ppl come over to visit could set him off...just a 5 min car ride to vet could set him off...

I am forever amazed by his patience with me for testing. He doesnt like it but he jumps on sofa when I need to test and sits still for me till I'm done. Would he do it for my husband or anyone else nope. Him and I are pretty bonded so I try very hard to make a vet trip last resort

Um....sounds like LM and Jade are twins that were seperated at birth!! I have a vet come to the house because of how upset she gets going to the vet. I suspect she has idiopathic cystitis as well (no crystals). What do you do for him to prevent the painful straining episodes? It's happened right after she is seemingly fine. Playing even. And all of the sudden she's walking in and out of her box and then the straining starts (even after she has peed recently). It's clearly painful. The last time it happened, she passed 3 clots and had blood in her urine drops. It's what made me get her the Ultrasound. I think the Prazosin is helping but I don't think that's something that can be long term. I did start adding Cosequin into her food but I don't want her to ever have another cystitis flare up again if I can help it. I also don't know what to do while it's happening. I now have Bupe for her, does that help?

Do you add water to her food when you feed? The more water the lower the ph in urine is the less concentrated

She does although the majority comes from her food-soup. My vet said the same thing, that sugar in the urine makes our kitties more prone to the UTI's because it creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

It's a constant battle it's good that you have a vet that can come to house that helps but clearly like LM even ppl in her house make her nervous.

I am not recommending this but I do still use some purina pro plan urinary tract health like maybe a couple times a week. Luckily its low carb with the PPP non rx. He was on hills rx and that stuff is 20+ %carb so I stopped and added him more water to food as well as PPP...so far so good.

I say not recommending cause while its low carb meaning under 10%...its not necessarily the right choice for Jade. I do it only as precaution since he has been blocked more than once.

She gets really upset about the in home vet as well, as do I as we have been clashing since the FD dx. She does not approve of the FDMB, but Jade gets way more upset if we have to go the vet office. I have to drug her and she's hyper sensitive to drugs. It took over 48 hours for the half dose of gabepentin and a few drops of Bupe to wear off after her Ultrasound last week. And she does not enjoy the high.

Wow yeah she is super sensitive!

I assume there isnt another vet in your area to interview? I havent found 1 vet yet who is good with the TR protocol. The one I recently interviewed was ok with it as long as I didnt hold her responsible for any I'll effects...tried to tell me he didnt look regulated with what I was doing and I said of course not that's gonna take time...but asked if she would agree he was a heck of a lot better doing it this way then following other vets advice and she couldnt disagree...so win LOL

I'm in Chicago and house call vets are very few and far between. We were great until the FD relapse.:banghead:

If the Purina Urinary wet food is low carb, what's the downside? Anything?

I dont think so...just looking at food list highest in any flavor is 9% which is chicken in gravy...the others are 4 and 3%...just dont know how sensitive Jade would be...

Not to mention some ppl have said they saw no difference that it did any good so ald saying your mileage may vary LOL
 
I think you have enough information without needing a curve BUT with SLGS you need 7 days at a dose. So you can increase Wednesday unless her bg comes down.
 
I’m not a fan of urinary food. Max blocked and was on CD for years as his bladder was burst by a vet and I nearly lost him. It made him gain weight and I wonder if he also got pancreatitis from eating the dry. I cajoled him into eating some wet. He did much better on an all wet diet when my vet gave the ok to switch. Before going that route I think I would try a meeting with a nutritionist and make my own food. For me it would be a last resort.

Jades +2 is 496. i don’t get why she is so high….
 
She needs more juice. If you were following TR her dose never would have been reduced. I am not at all suggesting you switch. It’s just with TR if a reduction fails you go right back to the last good dose but with SLGS you have to wait a week.

I know. Totally understand. She also hasn’t been feeling well which contributes to the higher bg. What medications is she getting now?

Over the counter. Do you think that her high numbers are causing the urinary straining episodes? If so, do I really have to wait until Wednesday to up her to .5U? I’m so worried that she’s going
To have another episode and if there is someway to prevent it, I want to. Ultrasound results are pretty good. No masses. Everything just reconfirms early kidney disease.
 
I don’t think her high numbers are due to straining. I do know stress is what caused Max to have pancreatitis as it started when Tiffany crossed and he had episodes after vet visits. So try your best to keep her calm. The test results were good so hopefully no more vet visits for awhile.

I was actually wondering if it’s the opposite in that is her straining due to the amount of glucose in her system? Being so high as of late.
 
Have you considered modifying SLGS to reduce below 75/80? Sometimes that works a little better for cats like Jade that see overall high numbers. Or 2x below 90

I see one 75 and one 80. Typically when people modify they choose 70 but really it's up to you and your comfort level.

Trouble is, some nights without a second test not sure how low she's going. I think I'd only modify if you can fairly consistently add a night test, at least until she stops this bouncing and swinging

There’s also a 67 in there. I always do a +2 in the evening and often a +5 when she wakes me up for middle of the night snack. I’m just often so tired that I forget to record it unless it’s at a # that jars me awake which has happened when it’s lower than I’m comfortable with.

Yes I would have reduced with that 67 out of caution as well. And ok makes sense! Just making sure you're aware of some options. If you choose to modify just note in signature and spreadsheet

Hi Jill. Since Jade has early stage kidney disease you should be aware of the phosphorus amount of whatever you feed her. It’s really important to preserve her kidneys. Lower phosphorus reduces the load of work on the kidneys.

What’s considered a low phosphorus amount? Number wise?
