Morning Katherine, I happy to hear Ruby is eating better. I think you may be right about the lysine being used more as a preventative than actually during a cold.
When Tyler had the upper respiratory the owner at the practice I go to ,he's the one that gave Tyler the famciclovir ,my vet was out that day, but I have also gone to the owner for years with my other cats in the past ( he owned several practices at the time so he was the first one I went to , I also trust him completely) before my vet joined the practice
he also suggested giving the lysine ,if I remember correctly it would just help with some of the symptoms ,not cure the cold. .The reason I stay with Tyler's vet is because the first time Perry had a seizure Dr Sass was who I saw because Dr Beeber (owner wasn't in) and I really liked her so I stayed with her. If she's not in I see the owner.

A few sneezes from Miss Ruby when I tested her this morning. She did eat all of her fuds last night and most of her breakfast so that is good. ✅:cat: This is her third day getting Lysine. Maybe it’s better as a preventative than it is at curing an actual cold? @Suzanne & Darcy have you used it long term or only when symptoms show up?

Lysine is an amino acid which is a building block for immune cells so I think it may help Ruby even though she has symptoms. :bighug:

Hi Katherine! I have used the Lysine both ways... in an FIV + cat as both a preventative and when he was ill (first when he was REALLY ill and then just kept going with it). So it is really hard for me to know how well it works! I know it really can help slow the replication of the herpes virus.
 
Another great supplement for immune boosting and which does have documented activity against feline herpes virus (as well as FIV) is Lactoferrin. I have used the Jarrow Formulas Lactoferrin 250 mg. mixed in wet food (never seemed to bother Marcus - he ate it up). Lactoferrin is a very small component of bovine colostrum, which is mostly immunoglobulins.
 
I read that people with chronic herpes use supplements ranging from herbals such as quercetin and prunella (often sold as All Heal or Self Heal), to the old standby L-lysine.
 
Thanks to everyone for chiming in on the lysine conversation! Ruby's still sneezing and sniffling. :( I wrote to her oncologist about her cold and about the very high triglycerides from her bloodwork last week that's got me worried. Oncologist said that she is not worried about the triglycerides--they may be lower if Ruby had been fasted for the blood draw but because that would interfere with her glucose control she doesn't want her to be fasted for those tests. She said Viralys is a good supplement and to take her to her primary vet if I need to. Sadly I don't have time--I have to work tomorrow, DBF is away--so my earliest opportunity is Monday.

Good thing is that we have a green PMPS. :D
 
A lot of times these viruses pass in about a week or so…. as long as the cat’s immune system is functioning well. I am sure that Ruby’s is. Remember last time they put her on antibiotics and then you stopped them due to diarrhea/inappetence and she got over it. I hope she will again this time.

Thank you, Suzanne. I remember when she came back from 3 nights at the ER hospital when she was DKA. She had a terrible cold after with a runny nose. It took her a few weeks to get over that, so I get nervous whenever she has these bouts. She did get over the last one fairly quickly. This one is a little tenacious, probably exacerbated with the stress of moving to a new home and a change in the weather.

Do you think the pred makes her more vulnerable? I was recalling the time that she was at the vet because of the fleas. She and Olive were going to get vaccines but didn’t, because they had symptoms of an URI.

The pred definitely makes her more vulnerable. Ruby's never been sick so often as she has been in the last 5 months since starting the pred.

Dang that work, always getting in the way of the important things! ;) Maybe it will clear up as her immune system fights it or it may be self-limited anyway. If not, at least, you have a plan. Get well, Ruby! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

It’s funny you say that… My friends call me their consulting vet. A friend of mine had her cat at the vet recently and we had texted back and forth a bit about her cat the afternoon of the visit…. And she actually took her phone and showed the vet one of my texts. I thought this was partly funny and partly embarrassing! I was saying… “ oh you did NOT show her my texts, did you?” The outcome though was that the vet (it was a new vet for her) agreed with what I had said and agreed to modify the kitty’s planned treatment. I’m sure the vet was probably thinking… oh great… she’s got one of those “know it all” types for a friend.

Suzanne, you are a font of knowledge with all of the experience you have had taking care of cats, and you never come off as a know-it-all! Cats are pretty inscrutable animals and it’s hard to know what is going on with them a lot of the time but you have an instinct that is valuable. I’d take your advice over a vet’s any day.
