11/9 Phoenix BG Still Dropping at +11.5

Phoenix had an asthma attack last Friday afternoon. His vet saw him on Saturday and started him on Levalbuterol nebulizer treatments. I am giving him the treatments twice a day for a week. His asthma had cleared up by Sunday morning.

I looked the medication up and could not find any information saying it lowers blood glucose levels. But, last Saturday, I skipped Phoenix's morning insulin for his vet visit. That evening, his PMPS was 478. I didn't check his BG all that night because his reading was so high. I was amazed that his AMPS the next morning was 86.

Phoenix's PMPS last night was 130. He started rising after that. I checked his BG at +8 and he was down to 60. I fed him one half can of fancy feast hc. Twenty minutes later BG 54. I fed him the other half can of f.f hc and some honey. At +9, Phoenix was only up to 77. I gave him more honey. At +9.5, his BG is 76. I gave him more honey. I have been trying to keep his BG up.

Phoenix's numbers don't support a reduction but do you think I should decrease his insulin? I am not sure what to do. His AMPS is in 2 hours.

Phoenix is now down to BG 69 at 11.5. I don't know if I should give him more honey. He has had a lot plus one and a half cans of fancy feast hc. I am having to delay his insulin injection by half an hour because I had to feed him.

Please let me know what to do. I am considering only giving him half a dose of insulin.

When did you last give him food/ honey?
It has been over an hour ago. He is now down to 62 BG. His AMPS is delayed for another 45 minutes. Should I give more honey or feed him? I don't know if the levalbuterol is causing this. Honey has always raised his BG in the past.

I'm thinking about you and Phoenix, Susan. I hope he starts coming back up. Certainly sounds like you have been providing the sustenance he needs to raise his glucose. Hope you can test and monitor today. Thank God you did last night.

Skip the shot. See if he will stay up with LC since you are skipping.

Did you give honey again at 62?

Feed him LC, skip the shot. He will get back on track.
I am so scared. Phoenix's BG is 55. I just gave him a lot more honey and fed him one half cup of beef steak. I am going to skip his insulin injection. His vet is off on Tuesday but I am going to call the clinic and see if the levalbuterol could cause this.

Don't be scared, Susan. You have a lot of experience with dealing with lower numbers. We are here to help.

The asthma being taken care of may be helping his numbers. I don't think the Levalbuterol is directly causing his numbers to drop.

He does not need honey this late in the cycle, especially since you are skipping. He should start rising on his own as the insulin from the last shot wears off.

Sorry Bhooma, I panicked and gave him more honey along with his beef. I hope the insulin wears off soon.
I just checked his BG again and it is 100. It should be with the amount of honey I gave him. I am going to monitor him very closely today. I hope he doesn't start dropping again after the honey wears off.

It is now 45 minutes past his usual insulin injection time. Thank you, Bhooma, I am so glad to have you helping me.

It's now 13 hours since the last shot. It should be wearing off as we speak. Even if he dips to green after the honey wears off, you should be able to keep him up with LC since there's no new insulin bringing him lower.

Thank you, Summer, it has been a really hectic morning. Don't worry, I monitor Phoenix very closely. I don't like his BG being this low. I prefer it to remain between 100 and 200. Thank you for your concern. Phoenix and I appreciate your support.

Thank you, Bhooma. I am sure you are right. His numbers have been really unusual lately. I appreciate all your help.

It’s good you skipped. Once you knew you would I too would have tried lc because the insulin would be wearing off. I think he’s just becoming controlled and might start going down the dosing scale. If I am right it can be a wild ride so get used to this. You don’t want to give too much honey and hc lasts longer. When Max would drop into the low 40’s he got hc with a little Karo and then just hc. As quickly as He stayed in the 50’s I switched to mc and lc.

I see you can now breathe!:bighug:

I really hope you are right about him becoming controlled. His numbers have been crazy. Like I told Bhooma, when I took Phoenix to the vet on Saturday, I skipped his insulin injection. That night, his PMPS was 478. I thought it would be okay not to check his BG all night. His AMPS the next morning was 86.

Thank you for checking in. I believe you are on the west coast. You are most likely still asleep when I post. Have a good day!
