I decided that I needed to put on my big girl pants and increase Ruby's dose. I read this in the Myths Debunked condo today and decided I needed to get Ruby's numbers better by allowing her to go lower than I am comfy with:

Kirsten notes: "(N.B. there are some cats that do well with BGs >=40 mg/dl and are difficult to regulate unless the dose is held at BGs in this range, but a cautious approach should be used until you are sure your cat reacts this way)." We have observed and made note of what cats usually fall into the category of cats who might do better when allowed to go below 50: long term diabetics.
I've allowed Ruby to go under 50 only 4 times since she started pred. My work schedule and having DBF do most of the daytime testing was worrying me, but now I'm thinking that I have room to be a teensy more aggressive with trying to get Ruby's numbers lower.

I pondered giving her a different dose AM and PM, and realized with two different people giving insulin, and possibly a third if the sitter ever has to do it, that it would be a logistical nightmare.

So I'm going to stick with the increase and I'm going to wait until three drops below 50 to reduce again as should be done with long terms like Ruby.

Wish us luck. And happy Caturday! I went down the rabbit hole of old 9 Lives commercials the other day (I'm old enough to have seen them on TV as a kid) and they're hilarious! Enjoy!

I remember Morris!!

Evening Katherine, good luck with the increase , A nice PMPS tonight.
I hope you all have a good night, and don't let those fleas get at you.
Have you found anymore on Ruby or Olive? I see you did the flea treatment on them on 10-11 are they keeping them off Ruby and Olive?

Different dose is an intriguing thought, just because of the way she reacts to pred. But I get it, there's a reason I'm the only one that regularly does insulin and meds, as much as I'd like the help.

Notttt to throw another wrench in the works, but have you considered Lev? I got beautifully flat cycles off it... although in your case, maybe the Lantus "swing" helps offset the pred :bookworm:

I got some more flea bites today. The cats seem totally fine tho!

I love the idea of Lev, have thought about asking her vets for a prescription, but I don't think I can manage low nadirs late at night/early in the AM. :( I've never been able to be one of you superhero Lev users who get up at PM+7 to test.

ECID you know ;) Mr Kitty's were mostly still +5 ish, but we did have a few odd cycles where nadir was +11 ish which was actually awesome.

DH and I had an arrangement where he'd handle anything up til 2am and I'd do after (also a newborn, so I was up half the time anyway...still am apparently lol).

I can't stay up and test and not be a grumpy zombie the next day and DBF is the same way. We do our best to get one or two tests a night, more if we don't have to work the next day. We both have mentally demanding jobs. It's really hard.

Honestly I just want to see her in fewer yellows. We stayed at 2.5 for a really long time and I need to deal, come what may.

I was looking around on the internet
Found this or is it a bunch of bull crap, how to keep fleas from biting humans
Try Lemon Tonic. Lemon juice is a known flea repellant. If you dilute the juice with water and put it in a spray bottle, it’s safe to use on yourself, and even your kids
Thanks, Diane. I'll give it a try. I'm desperate! I did try spraying an organic, DEET-free mosquito repellant on me that has essential oils in it that seems to work well when I'm outdoors but is fairly suffocating indoors. The smell was just too much for me.
