9/30 Phoenix BG at +10 55 Dropping Again

I forgot to set my alarm last night. I usually check Phoenix's BG at +9. The only reason I woke up was because Phoenix was vocalizing loudly. He does this in the mornings. It was already +10.5 .

I got up and checked his BG and had a hard time getting any blood. This usually happens when his BG is low. After about 5 pricks, I managed to get a sample. His BG was 55. I gave him some honey and some fancy feast hc. Twenty minutes later at +11, his BG was 94. At +11.5, he is 97.

This really terrified me. I checked my alarm because I usually leave it set for 4 a.m. I had accidentally set it for 4 p.m. instead of a.m.

That really threw me in a panic this morning. Thank goodness he vocalized when he did. I wouldn't have woken up and his BG could have gone a lot lower.

It has been a hectic morning. I had a handyman due at 6 a.m. I look out my window at 5:30 right after I got up and he is already putting shingles on my storage shed with his floodlights lighting up the roof. While trying to rush around checking Phoenix's BG, he is asking me to unlock my storage shed to get inside. What a way to start the morning. I haven't even had time for a cup of coffee !!

The important thing is that you caught it and he is safe! Hopefully things will settle down and you can get that cuppa! :-)

Do you have an autofeeder that you can use to feed him at nights? Not that that will replace the +9 check since he does like to dip lower around then.

Bhooma, I just checked Phoenix's BG again. It is back down to 68. I have given him some more fancy feast hc. It is now 30 minutes past his regular shot time.

I just checked Phoenix's BG again. It is back up to 80. It is now 1 hour past his usual insulin injection. I think I may have panicked when I gave him more food when his BG dropped back to 68. If I had waited 30 minutes, I could have given him his insulin. Now, I will have to wait another 2 hours.

Susan, I am just seeing your posts. Was the 68 at +12.5? 2 hours after the HC at +10.5? If yes, you could have shot and can still shoot.

I fed him more f.f hc at that time so I couldn't give his insulin. I didn't realize my mistake until after I fed him. Now, he has dropped again. It is now an hour and a half past his regular injection time. Phoenix has dropped back down to 64. I fed him some more f.f hc.

I am unsure about what to do.

Since it is an hour and half late, you could skip the shot and shoot at your regular time tonight. It will also drain the depot a bit.

If you are skipping, don't feed any more HC. He should start going up soon.

Thank you Bhooma. I just checked his BG again. It is 75. I will do what you think is best. Do you think I should skip his injection? If so, should I go ahead and feed him his regular breakfast?

Yes. Since it's nearly 2 hours since your shot time, it may be better to skip. Feed him his regular LC going forward.
Has he eaten enough in the last 4 hours to compensate for his usual breakfast?

I just checked Phoenix again before I fed him. He had dropped to 48. I panicked and gave him a small amount of honey while I prepared his breakfast.

He had not eaten enough to compensate for his regular breakfast so this is probably why he is still dropping. Sorry for feeding the honey. I know you said not to but I was scared. I am skipping his insulin this morning and will give him his regular injection this evening. Thank you, Bhooma

Wow. It's good that you skipped his shot this morning. You may want to look at taking another reduction to 10U tonight.
Even though he hasn't earned one. You can always go back up if needed. He seems to be holding the reductions so far.

I’m on the west coast so sleeping when you are at the end of your pm cycle. Good you skipped. With all that hc I would probably take that reduction that Bhooma suggested.

Ok, I will lower him to 10U this evening. This was so unexpected. He had been doing great when we reduced to 10.50 . He would rise up to around 300 for a while during the day but then went back down. I was really happy with his numbers.

I just checked his BG again. It has been a little over 20 minutes since he ate his breakfast. His BG is 109. I am still going to check him again in 30 minutes. Thanks so much for your help. I don't really understand how to handle situations like this.
