Yesterday.

The gravity of the flea situation finally caught up to us, and we decided last night to get an exterminator. Enough is enough. I will be wearing pants for the foreseeable future because I have so many embarrassing bites, and DBF is sick from all of the “natural” remedies I am spraying to combat the fleas.

The exterminator is coming on Saturday while I am at work. DBF and kitties must vacate for 4 hours. He will bring kitties to the vet to be boarded for that time. When they arrive, they will be given shots for distemper and rabies in order to be boarded. They have not had these shots since they were kittens so I feel ok about it. Otherwise I don’t know what to do with them for four hours.

As the humans in the house freak out, the kitties seem to be feeling better. Ruby woke me up with head butts and loud purrs, while Olive did some zoomies for me this morning. Ruby’s BGs seem to be holding steady after a bit of a drop last night.

Hope everyone is having a great day! :bighug:

Glad kitties are feeling better, I've been feeling imaginary fleas since this started!

We had one reeeeally bad infestation like you're describing, I always wore long pants tucked into socks, all light colored like Carla said. We did end up bombing for that one because there was just no way we'd get it under control quickly. I'd just (obviously) be sure to wipe down the high traffic/kitty/human areas once done.

I don't think the exterminators are doing bombing that would require wiping down surfaces. They are likely spraying everything with a fine mist. I will call them again tomorrow to ask precisely what the treatment is and what chemicals they are using as well as to see if I need to put away things like food dishes.

Happy things are finally looking up Katherine. As I read your posts last night I felt so bad for all of you. You have such great coping skills considering …. Your descriptions are so “descriptive” I could feel fleas all over me. Glad that Ruby is doing better. I hope they kept them together at the “boarding house” :D. This does mean it’s all over, no more flea creatures hiding anywhere :stop:. You are an inspiration to me, I can’t handle any bugs on any level. :nailbiting: We have a bug service regularly. Take care all of you, hope Frank is feeling better. :bighug::bighug:

Frank is feeling much better today, thanks, @Our Dolly Girl and @Suzanne & Darcy! He and the kitties seem to be fairing better, while I am only accumulating more and more flea bites since they can't go after the cats anymore. Calgone, take me away! :arghh::arghh::arghh:

3M's Insect Repellent Lotion is some pretty heavy duty stuff.
Sorry, I didn't see you post on yesterday's condo, Diane! I did look at this stuff, but I'm really afraid to use it. The fleas bite my legs below my knees, and the kitties like to rub up against my shins. I'd have to shower every time I wanted to get into bed because the cats like sleeping with me. I'd rather be itchy than use DEET indoors with the cats around.

Katherine what are zoomies???
This place as you probably know is a very trustworthy information source:

Lymphoma | Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine

Fleas are so horrible. It only takes one as you now know! They also go dormant and come back to life as soon as the conditions are right-sorry to say! Glad you are taking it seriously!
Zoomies are when a cat races around the house for no apparent reason. Olive does this a lot!

I like that link to Cornell but I'm curious why you cited it?

I'm glad I'm taking it seriously too. It's going to be an expensive thing with boarding the cats and everything but it will be worth it!

Yes. Some of my kitties have had flea allergy dermatitis from One flea bite! Set up an allergic reaction that only responded to Depo Medrol injection (we waited months and cats went bald with all of our home remedies and natural alternatives! Felt guilty!)

I didn’t mean to scare by suggesting “chemical alternatives” for the flea bites. I guess I would wear pants if I had anything on my legs at all. I won’t even pet my cats at night with hand cream on (( I wear gloves!).

You didn't scare me at all! I am using some steroidal anti-itch cream as a "spot" treatment on all of the little bites. I collected 4 more bites tonight. :arghh::banghead::arghh::banghead:

I also took a Benedryl as I am clearly very allergic to the fleas. DBF has gotten ZERO bites. It's so very unfair.

Yep I agree with you about the DEET, I'm so glad you're getting an exterminator to come in, you can't go on like this. I'm glad the kitties are feeling better, and Frank
too, that's crazy that Frank hasn't been bitten. They are probably biting you because you're so sweet ! Happy you got some head butts and olive had the zoomies! They must be feeling so much better,
So are the fleas completely gone on the kitties?
Ruby is having some nice numbers . Sorry you got 4 more bites tonight. :bighug::bighug:

Fleas are falling off the kitties and onto the bed, which grosses me out. They don't seem bothered by them anymore, so the Advantage II seems to be working very well. Tomorrow night I'm going to come home and do yet another through hoovering of the apartment. I still see the fleas hopping around on the ground. How did this happen to us? :arghh:
