Cat experiencing moderate hypoglycemia

He is walking around in circles and seems very disoriented. I gave him a tablespoon of Karo and have been feeding him dry cat food. When I first tested him, his blood was at 53, I just tested him again and it's at 74 but he isn't acting any different. Any advice? The closest vet to me is 1 hour away or I would have gone by now.

He probably dropped even lower before you tested. Do you have an up to date ss? All I see is one from 2019. Will he eat any food? It will stay with him longer. Has he been in remission and diabetic again?

I haven't updated it since then. He was always staying between 100-200. Lately he's been getting lower for some reason. He has been eating dry food.

Both 53 and 74 are normal blood sugar numbers on a human meter. You tested with the ReliOn right?

Please test again in half an hour.

Is he looking better now that his numbers are higher?

That bg isn’t low enough for a hypo. I think something else is going on. Does he have any other health issues? When was his last vet visit?

He may have had a vestibular event. Are his eyes going in a clockwise counterclockwise motion if you hold his eyelids wide open??

It’s good you took him there. Did they check his bg? I hope he will be ok and come home soon. :bighug: He must be anemic. Please let us know how he is doing when you are able.

Just checking in this morning to see how Grey is doing. Have they figured out what might be wrong?
900 dollars later and they couldn't give me a real diagnosis. They think he was experiencing "the Somogyi Effect". He also had high blood pressure so they gave me medication for that. He's a lot better today at least.

I can't remember how to change the tag on my title so it no longer says "911".

Geez! It's hard to spend that kind of money and not know for sure what the problem was! So sorry you had to go through all of that!

As far as the 911, go back up to the top of your post to the right corner where it says Thread Tools. You can change it there.

First of all that was not Somogyi Effect I bet. He either dropped under 50 before you tested again or who knows. I would not start bp medication based upon one test at the ER after stress and who knows what caused the panting. I’ve had cats on bp medication and my vet tests and then has me come back a couple weeks later to check again. What medication were you given? His bp needs to be carefully monitored if you start it. It should be checked in 10 days to two weeks. Please call your regular vet about this. Do you have a copy of the labs you can copy and paste? If not have it emailed to you.

They didn't give me his labs and the medication is called Amlodipine.
