Hello all, Does anybody else have a kitty that throws unexpected pre show lows? Tony had been running in the high 200s- low 300s, but a few times now hes thrown a low pre shot number (like tonight). I cant figure out what causes it, he eats the same, activity is the same and it frustrates me because from what I've read on SLGS it means he only gets a "token" dose and it messes up the insulin depot. Does this mean his pancreas might be waking up? Or is it just a fluke thing that happens sometimes?
Also, what is the ideal nadir for a kitty? Ive seen him in the area of 112-118 at nadir, to be honest I'm afraid of him dropping into the hypo range if I increase his dose.

I did have a batch of bad test strips, so Im pretty sure some of the 400-500 tests lately were wrong, when I retested the numbers varied GREATLY so I'm not at all confident in some of the higher numbers. Thanks so much!

Hi Jodi,

Expected the unexpected couldn't be more true with feline diabetes! :-)

Nadirs can and do move around. Sometimes when they occur at the end of the cycle or close to it, you get lower preshots. Lower preshots also indicate that the cat is possibly going lower in the cycle and those lows are not being captured without tests.

The normal range of BG for a cat on a human meter is 50-100 and say 70-120 on a pet meter. Since you are following SLGS, you hold a dose in which nadirs are between 90 and 150.

As long as you can monitor, you can shoot any number over 90 with SLGS. If you get a number below 150 and you are uncomfortable shooting, stall without feeding and post here for help. Shooting a token dose does mess with the depot and it will take 4-6 cycles to rebuild.

Would it be possible for you to get more tests? Normally with SLGS, the requirement is a weekly curve but spot checks are always useful to get more data on how the cat is doing on a particular dose. The idea is to be able to see how low the dose is taking the cat.

Hello Bhooma, thank you for replying
I'm happy to hear that his nadir is getting into the acceptable range finally! What scares me is if hes going lower in the cycle and I'm not here to catch it. If hes under 150 and I cant be here to monitor should I give a reduced dose then?

I thought from what I'd read that I was supposed to give a reduced dose on a test under 200, maybe that was on the human meter? I have been using both to try to get used to the human meter, however I dont have a spread sheet set up for the human one yet. Can I set up a second spreadsheet for the human meter?

I have been trying to get a spot check here and there when I can, Its been a bit hard due to working long hours and taking my mom to dr appts on my days off. Ill try to do a full curve again soon. I have to go to bed but I'll check back in the morning. Thanks again

If you can get a test at +2 (in a cycle where he starts lower), you can give the full dose (especially if it's above 150) and feed higher carbs at +2 if necessary. If he is below 150, you may want to stall without food and post here for help. Typically, you stall without food and test after 20 mins. If they are rising, it could be safe to shoot the whole dose.

You can use the same spreadsheet if you switch to a human meter. Just let me know when you decide to switch and I'll make the small changes to the SS required for a change of meter.

Great, thank you!
