Phosphorus binder

Joe's phosphorus is still within normal range according to your labs of 7/8/21.
When to start using a binder:

If you are looking to have some on hand for the future, this one. It does not expire and should last you a very long time. You only use a teeny, tiny amount.

Did the vet say something yesterday to have you start thinking about binders? Maybe wait until his labs come back tomorrow and post them for input?
I know there are some wizards with lab work who would gladly take a look at them.
 
Just got caught up on your posts.
While you wait for Joe's lab results to come in I recommend looking over the ckd page. It is a TON of information and if the kidney values have worsened (which eventually they will) it will give you a better idea of what to expect and what treatments you can try. They also have a forum, though it's not as busy as this one. But lots of helpful people. The hardest part for me has been to get my vet on the same page unfortunately.

The vet has said nothing about a binder but someone else told me to start them

This ^^ lovely peson is the one that said he should be on them. Sorry Stas mom, do not mean to put you on blast but you mentioned getting him on a binder

Again, I mean no disrespect but there seems to be two rules of thumb when considering binders. Are you sure? Please?

You might call and ask if they can add a test called an SDMA. It's only done by IDEXX lab so it may depend on which lab they use. It's a newer test for CKD that's supposed to catch it earlier.

thanks Chris I am will post blood work as soon as I have it and will call the vet today and ask about adding that test

Please read the ckd link about phosphorus binders I included (again below).

There are different suggestions on when to start binders based on different experts on that website. Some (like Dr. Nagode) recommend starting at phosphorus levels of 4. IRIS recommends it be started at 4.6 if at stage 2 based on creatinine value. Tanya's herself definitely recommends starting at 6.
My point when bringing up binders was that the phosphorus was mid to upper 5s in July, some recommend binders at that point but if the labs come back and it is 6 or more all the recommendations are for binders.

Thanks SMM and I am listening to you and grateful that you gave input. I want to be sure to do all I can so I will be checking his level and also posting it here. Please keep up your input even if it differs from others

I'd like you to read and absorb the info in the links as they have links to the source of the recommendations and why. I'm new here, like you, and not an expert. I am just trying to provide you with info I found and am following. Remember this forum is specific to diabetes even though some here have experience with ckd too. There are other forums that deal specifically with ckd issues and give recommendations for that. I REALLY recommend you look at them and join those too for ckd opinion/advice.

I wish there was a "love' and not just a "like" thingy. I would love to read them and absorb them but for some reason my brain is not cooperating with me. I am not retaining info. Not sure if it is old age or grief is in the way, too much on my plate, too much info on Joe's needs, etc. I cry as I write this because I fear due to this dead locked brain I will miss something

Oh no! Just put it aside until you can handle it. Remember when the spreadsheets here were complete gibberish? And learning how to test and give shots? And now you've got that handled. Everything in time.
