9/1 Buffy 11.1 AMPS/ 14.4 +2

Buffy read at 11.1 this morning. I am not sure why I am so scared to shoot as when she registered 11.4 I gave her the 1 unit. I guess 11.1 seems to be a magic number of go or no go. Before my vet had said shoot only at 15 but then I finally got around to believing what this group is saying.

so do I shoot this morning the full 1 unit or should maybe I give only .5.

thanks

I am sharing the link for our dosing protocols:
Dosing Methods: Start Low, Go Slow (SLGS) & Tight Regulation (TR)

Your signature says you are following SLGS. With SLGS you do a weekly curve to assess how the numbers are on a particular dose and make adjustments accordingly.

Lantus is a depot insulin and is dosed based on nadirs - how low the BG is going on a particular dose - not on preshots. You will get best results with consistency - you shoot the same dose morning and evening. If you can monitor you can shoot any number over 90 with SLGS.

Next time you get a number that you are uncomfortable shooting, stall without feeding and post here for help.

Btw, are you feeding Royal Canin Spay/Neuter dry food?

I need to amend the food. I am only giving FF. The RC was wet but I have taken her off of it for about a month now

Hi Patti when posting on the Lantus please do your title like this
9-1 Buffy AMPS-11.1 then any tests you would do after that such as +2 then the BG
We do post a new thread every day and link the previous days link to it
Bandits Mom did it for you in post #2
Thanks Patti

Lantus is dosed based upon the low point in the cycle. You don’t have any tests except for the amps and pmps as Bhooma explained. Can you do a curve today and test every 2 hours for the whole cycle?

Patti has updated the SS after you posted. From the +2 it looks like a bounce cycle, not a good day to do a curve.

Hi, why would you not do a curve on a bounce cycle? I am getting so confused on everything. Not sure what a bounce cycle is either. I have tried reading but I am missing things.

The reason for the curve is to see how low a dose is taking your cat. When bouncing she is high from having been lower than she is used to and will remain high for up to 4-6 cycles. So we won’t get the information we need. Also it is it will be hard to figure out what her low point is with all the skips.

You need a dose you can shoot every cycle. I think you should reduce. Do you use syringes with half unit markings?

I do have a syringe with half units. I give .5 at night and have been giving 1 full unit in the morning. We have recently increased Buffy dexamethasone from half a tablet to a full expecting her sugars to rise. I do have a curve from a month ago but so much has been happening to her with vet visits and issues that I have held off on curves recently. Do old curves give you info as well?

This sticky has information on how Lantus acts and what are active cycles and what is bouncing:
The Basics: New to the Group? Start here!

"Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". Usually, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles)."

That’s likely what led to diabetes. Two different doses won’t work with lantus we have found. Lantus likes consistency unless too low to shoot. You should be able to shoot any bg over 150 I would think provided you can get a test after pmps. We don’t have any idea how low she goes at night. Maybe try shooting .75 or even .50 until you are comfortable shooting lower and lower. You only have half of the data without any night nadirs.

I do have some data for after the pm shot. It’s earlier in August and I put some notes in one cell so it doesn’t show through properly but I haven’t been able to do a 24 hour capture

Can you just fill in what data you do have please? What you have on the ss is too far in the past. We need for the last week.

Sorry the only pmps data I have is over a month old. I will try to obtain more data when I can. It has been a difficult month and I have not been able to do late night testing

The +2 is often a good predictor of the cycle. If lower than the pmps (amps as well) it’s good to set an alarm for later.
