? He will NOT eat. Skip shot?

I hope the fact that there's a .5 in your PM U column means you shot.

You usually have about 2 hours before the shot starts to "kick in" so you usually have time to get them to eat. You can also syringe feed if you have to

No, I didn’t shoot. He ate a few bites about 30 minutes ago, then wouldn’t eat anymore. One of my others threw up three times today and barely ate; she never does that. She will be dropped off at the vet’s early in the morning. It’s been a difficult day. Fritz was due at the new vet at 3:20, had to postpone until Tuesday. Hubby had a root canal today, in serious pain. Need I say more? :banghead: If I have to syringe feed before I go to bed, I will do so, and we will be back on schedule in the morning. I knew I might be doing the wrong thing, but to me it felt like the safest thing to do.

Omg, Fritz JUST NOW started eating, two hours past shot time, ate most of his food. Now what?

It is really not a good idea to skip shots. If a kitty is not eating, you can still give a half dose, which is what many vets suggest giving when a cat is fasting before surgery. Insulin is needed in the body of other things apart from bringing down the BG.
Not eating and not getting insulin are two of the three ingredients for DKA so avoid that if possible.
I don’t know how far off schedule you can be. Your choice is to give insulin now amd try and get get back on schedule or skip and give the next dose when due.
Make sure Fritz eats well tonight.

He finished a bowl of food and there will be food out tonight. I will syringe feed him before I go to bed if I can’t tempt him to eat something else while I watch.. I do need to stay on schedule. I have vet appointments for the others and my own doctor’s appointments and business appointments scheduled around this testing/shooting schedule. I will remember about the partial dose. The fact that they give it to cats fasting before surgery will stay in my head. The last thing I wanted to do was skip, I had already drawn up the shot and had it in my hand. I feed him in a room by himself where the other cats can’t distract him. I set a timer for 15 minutes and when I open the door, his bowl is clean and I give him his shot. My heart sank when I walked in tonight and he hadn’t eaten a bite, and the food was one of his favorites. I realize there are going to be times like this, the reduced dose I can work with if it happens again. Thank you both for your help.

Ok good plan
Even if you give a bit less than Half, but don’t skip for that reason. It’s all a learning process. :)

You are so kind. I feel like a bit of a failure tonight where this is concerned. Just ate the first bite of food I’ve had all day and it’s 11:11 p.m. Four other cats and a husband are fine. Three other cats, a fourth throwing up, a non-eating Fritz and a post-root canal hubby in agony (similar to The Dreaded Man Cold) make me want to run screaming out into the night. Truly, thank you.

Very happy to help….we have all been where you are and understand. It often only takes one little thing to tip us over…..
Don’t feel a failure at all, you are doing magnificently. You should have seen me in the beginning!

I cannot imagine you any other way than totally capable and competent, although I know it’s new to all of us in the beginning. If I end up even partially as knowledgeable as you it will be REALLY remarkable. On the bright side, my Nova Max meter, ketone strips and glucose strips arrived today. I haven’t had time to open the shipping box, but it’s here. One thing I’ve been meaning to ask - what impact does exercise have on BG? I make sure they get lots of play every day. Should I keep play time away from Fritz’s test or shot time?

exercise can lower blood glucose because when you work the muscles, they need more glucose and they take it from the bloodstream, but excessive exercise can raise the glucose because the stress hormones can be released which raise it.....so basically, a little playing is great for Fritz, just no 4 minute miles

Omg, Chris, I so needed that laugh! :joyful::joyful::joyful: Thx!
