Currently I have now added Fancy Feast pate’ to coopers diet. I’m still giving him at his dosing times 1/4 cup of the dry Pro Plan essentials chicken and rice. At +6 times I’m giving him 1/8 cup of the dry as well as a quarter can of the wet food to ease him into it. I just get extremely concerned with how much his BG numbers seem to fluctuate. Can I be doing something wrong or do they really jump up and down like this? At his pm dose tonight he was over 400. 2 hours later he’s in the low 200s.

His appetite is very good. He devours any and everything I put in front of him and actually cries for more food multiple times a day and he continues to test negative for ketones. I have the keto diastix and it shows he has 2000 grams of sugar in his urine (that’s been consistent).

Yes, they can really be "rainbow kitties" for quite some time. China didn't start giving me something slightly resembling a pattern for 5-6 months

BUT, with that big drop tonight, it will be important for you to keep testing until you're sure he's safe. With Lantus, most of the time the +2 should be about the same as the PS. When there's that much of a drop, it may mean Cooper is going to drop a lot further as the cycle goes on. He's still got a long way to go to be in any danger, but you need to know that you need to keep testing for awhile.

If you haven't already done it, I'd give him a couple teaspoons of his regular food and test again at +3 and see if he stops dropping so much

Just tested him again at +3.50 and up to 348. So it jumped significantly in an hour and a half and without any additional food or treats. So odd.

Marc, am I reading this correctly….you are giving Cooper 1/8 can of dry and 1/4 can of wet at +6?
If so, you would be much better giving him a snack of the wet food at +3 and +5 and keeping the dry for main meals. This might help to lower the BGs a bit.
Feeding dry food at +6 is a bit late in the cycle to be doing that as the dry food stays in the system longer than the wet and could be keeping the BG higher later in the cycle. And feeding wet on top of the dry at +6 will shorten the duration of the insulin.

If you can do this we can see if it changes the BGs. If not, the dose may need to be increased.

Yes! You were correct that’s what I’ve been giving him but I’ll change to your recommendations starting tomorrow! So does 1/4 cup of the dry at dosing times and then 1/4 can of wet at +3 and +5 sound good or should I increase or decrease any? He seems so hungry but is that something I should just let him get used to?

Because he’s post DKA ( can you put that in your signature please? ) we want him to eat well so I think for now I would maybe give him the dry for the main meals and a snack of the fancy feast at +2+4+6 and +8. Just 1/4 can each snack. If he’s hungry he needs to eat. We love post DKA kitties who are hungry!! It’s so much easier to help them.
Keep the dry for Preshot meals.
How does that sound?

Did he lose weight, is he a good weight or a he overweight?

That sounds good! I’m willing to do anything to help my poor little guy. I’ll do the 1/4 dry each dose time and 1/4 can throughout the gaps between his doses.

Before all of this he was overweight but now he’s right at 12.9 and the vet said to try to maintain that weight

If you could put what and where you are feeding the snacks into the remarks column each day, that would be helpful. Something like 1/4 cab FF snacks at +2, +4 +6 and +8. How do you think he is generally? Is he alert, not lethargic, social, playful, depressed, walking around the house, not wanted to move etc.

I have been putting notes attached to the time slots each time. Should I do the remarks instead or both?

Oh he is back to his insane self lately. Playful, getting into almost everything he can. Climbing on top of my refrigerator to open a pack of 75 toy mice that he so desperately wanted to play with . Other than seeming hungry constantly and the excessive drinking and peeing he’s back to himself.

No, just putting them into the SS is fine. But are you only feeding him once apart from the preshot meals? And instead of food it would be good if you put LC 30 grams or similar
I’m glad he seems himself again.
