Meter recommendations for smaller blood sample?

Can anyone recommend a meter that only requires 0.3uL of blood?

I’ve been told the ears will learn to bleed but I have to do so many extra tests and waste so many strips because my sample comes up just a little short quite often. It’s very frustrating.

The system I’m using requires 0.5uL.

I read that a lot of people use certain ReliOn meters that require the smaller amount, but I can’t seem to find it available for sale anywhere. I found ReliOn Prime, but that also requires 0.5uL. Can anyone help with us? I think it would make a huge difference for me

It’s so weird the Prime is still sold out at Walmart.com from when I checked for you last week.
The Premier is in stock. I can’t remember the difference between the two? You could search for the forums for “premier vs prime”.
Doesn’t require a smaller sample, it’s .5, but maybe the strip style would work better for Red?
 
This one required less blood (I loved that about it), but it's a pet specific meter so the readings are higher.

If that link doesn't work it's called PetTest Advocate and the kit is currently on Amazon for $30.

Thank you! I’m confused. So are the pet ones inaccurate? I thought it would be the opposite. I honestly don’t care about price at this point. But I do care about accuracy. I will check out the links. Much appreciated!

I can get the prime meter online and the strips. But it’s not what I need because it’s the same amount of blood. I know that’s my problem. He doesn’t bleed well and I can never get a big enough drop for 0.5uL. I get very close though. That’s why I’m thinking a smaller one would make a world of difference.

I would try 30g lancets before I switched meters.
 
The Freestyle lite requires 0.3uL but the strips are expensive, basically the same cost as buying an AlphaTrak.

The ReliOn meter that requires 0.3uL is the ReliOn micro, but it has been discontinued. Sometimes it says it’s “in stock” on Walmart’s website, but it is not. If you try to order it, it will just say it’s back-ordered indefinitely, until you eventually just cancel the order.

What size lancets are you currently using? I would agree with trying a bigger lancet, but I would try 28g or even 26g instead of 30. Higher gauge lancets poke smaller holes.

If you want a pet specific meter, they are not inaccurate, they just typically read higher so we use a different range of numbers for them. I will say that the majority of people here are going to highly recommend that you use a human meter, as all the protocols used here are based on human meters. But the choice is yours, whatever works for you!
 
It may not be the amount of blood required that’s the problem. I use the Relion Premier and was sometimes having trouble getting enough blood. Lately, I found that if I alter the angle at which I am putting the strip to the blood drop, it takes a lot less blood than I thought. At the right angle, just a teeny bit fills the strip just fine. Of course, getting the kitties to stay still enough to get the right angle is a whole other problem o_O

I haven't seen it advertised specifically for pets, but I know the human version is very popular but it does require the user to hold the device on the area for several seconds while the "vacuum" works. It's also really expensive for a lancet device.

It might be a good option for you if you want to try it though

It’s definitely pricey. I think it would be worth it though if it made testing easier. Any idea if it would be less accurate getting blood from other parts of his body? Sorry if it’s a dumb question. I assume blood is blood. But I’ve been wrong about so many things that I don’t think I can safely say that for sure. LOL
