Hello again!

Well, after 2 reductions in a row, and some great lower numbers, Alphyne is back in the 300s. Such a stinker! :banghead:

But, frustration aside, I am having shoulder surgery tomorrow. I have a friend coming in to give her shots while I'm out of it, and for safety's sake, I lowered her dose to 1.5U (she's currently at 1.75U) so she doesn't have to mess with the calipers or doesn't give her too much insulin. Since I use syringes with 1/2 unit markings, I figured that would be the safest route (and I saw that's what others in the forum have done).

My question is on the curve. She's been all over the place number wise, and there have been a few days where she got no shot or a token dose. I was planning for a curve on the 10th, which is 11 days after she started the new dose. But, since I'm reducing for my surgery, do I start the curve day count after I get her back up to full dose? I know with TR the count starts over, but with SLGS, I'm not really sure how to count it, with all the missed/reduced shots in the past few days, and knowing she'll be getting a lower dose for a day or two now. I'm assuming her depot will probably be depleted...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Bobbi. I can't advise on the curve but wanted to wish you well with your shoulder surgery tomorrow.

Thanks so much! I'm kind of excited for it, as silly as that sounds. Right now I cant sleep on my left side...it will be nice to have full 'roll over' range when I sleep! LOL! :bighug:

Your kitty has a great 'stache!! ;)

Yes, I love Susie's 'stache. Are you having the rotator cuff surgery? Funny you said you can't sleep on your left side. I know when I do my shoulder starts to hurt too. It doesn't on the right side. What was your diagnosis?

Are you having the rotator cuff surgery?

Good guess! The official diagnosis is adhesive capsulitis with a possible rotator cuff tear. I definitely have a bone spur that is wearing on the rotator cuff, so they will shave that down. Fingers crossed the cuff isn't actually torn. That means 6-10 weeks in a sling. If it's just the bone spur, then it's only 2-4 weeks. LOL!

Praying for just the bone spur. My Mom had the rotator cuff surgery and she said it was the worse pain she had ever had afterward. Of course, she was 82 years old and has never dealt well with pain. I'm not saying this to scare you. Just be prepared. Best of luck to you!

Hmm, my shoulder wasn't in a sling with my rotator cuff tear. And it was a combo with a compaction fracture in the head of the humerus. Advil was my best friend. Regardless, I sure wouldn't have wanted to be testing then! I hope your surgery goes well.

As for the curve, the issue is that you need to have the depot build back up again. The dosing has not been consistent so the depot is disrupted. And hence the numbers all over the place. You need at least six cycles at the same dose before you'll get an idea what that dose can do. So the 10th would work, provided she gets 1.5 units every cycle between now and then.

Thanks so much! I didn't know that about the 6 cycles...that is fantastic knowledge!

YIKES...yours sounds way worse! My knees were like that...everyone I know having the same surgery always got big knee braces, but my surgeon never put me in a brace, and I've had 5 knee surgeries...never a single brace! I would love to not get a sling at all. But testing will be tough regardless...she weighs 15 pounds...I've been trying to practice just getting down on the floor. :)

Thanks again!!

That's why I haven't had my shoulder surgery (right shoulder). It's been needed for several years, but even after the MRI, my orthopedic surgeon couldn't be 100% sure until he got in there how much he'd have to fix. If it was just a bone spur I'd just have to be gentle with it for a few weeks, if it was a tendon tear, a sling for a few weeks, but if it was a rotator cuff tear, I'd need to be in an immobilizer for 6 weeks. At the time, I was still dealing with my mom with Alzheimers so I couldn't take the chance of going into a surgery where I didn't know how I'd come out until after it was done.

Since then though, I fell and not only broke my left foot, but hurt my left shoulder so now all the attention's on that shoulder. MRI was crazy...neither the ortho surgeon or radiologist had seen anything like it. There's a rotator cuff tear, but it's on the other side, not where everybody else tears it so would require a totally different type of surgery that they aren't really sure would work and would be a lot more difficult. Then there was my humorous which looked all wrong....they thought either a break that had bled a lot into the bone or possibly a tumor so wanted to do a CT scan to rule out a break.

Sure would be a lot easier if there were "people parts" stores like there are auto parts stores!

People parts stores would be great...I'd get a new shoulder, new knees, and I'd throw in a smaller butt while I was at it! ;);)

Isn't it crazy how we hurt ourselves? I've never had shoulder issues. Last year I has a hernia repair and a knee surgery, and was feeling a bit out of whack, so I went to the chiropractor. He stretched something a bit too far, and bam...shoulder problems! He didn't cause it, of course, just sped up the inevitable. You just never know what's going to be a trigger!

I hope you can get some relief...surgical or otherwise!! :bighug:
