It’s been a very long time since I was last here. Blitzen continues to be in remission and for that I’m blessed and thankful.
I took him for his dental and we learned he is in the very early stage of kidney disease . He did need the cleaning and he had 7 teeth extracted . He is home and resting comfortably. The gave him fluids during the procedure and then subcutaneous fluids before discharge, I will bring him again tomorrow morning for one more round of fluids. The concern is that the anesthesia is hard on the kidneys so hopefully all the hydration will prevent any further damage.

So my question is feeding him to help the kidneys but not raising his BS. He eats only FF pate and for years he has eaten the Young Again Zero Carb as he needs his kibble to but had to go off it a couple of months ago because it gave him diarrhea.I’m thinking all that protein and his age it just didn’t mix anymore. Anyway now I would never give him that much protein with the kidney issue.

What’s the happy medium here? How do I keep thing low carb enough but enough carbs to not raise BS ?
If anyone has any experience with this please chime in.

thanks!

What you need is a good lower in phosphorus... The protien isn't really a concern. A great option is weruva. This is what I feed my diabetic ckd cat

Weruva slide and serve pate foods Family Food (.97 phosphorus and 0 carb). Also Jeopurrdy Chicken (0.97 P 6.1 carb)

What a Crock 0.71 phosphorus and 8 carb lots of gravy so she loved it.

Goody stew shoes 0.71 phosphorus, 8.5 carb. This one was a big hit

Weruva Steak Frites (0.57 phosphorus 5.5 carb although I take out any big pieces of potatoes to try to limit the carbs just a bit)

Weruva LA isla Bonita - phosphorus 0.77 carb 4.5 (used to like, not a favorite anymore)
Glam and punk 1% carb, 0.93 phosphorous.

Weruva paw lickin chicken 3.3 carb 0.82 p and
Press your lunch 5.9 carb. 0.82 phosphorous

Bff play Laugh Out Loud chicken and lamb 7.7 carb, 0.82 phosphorous

BFF play destiny (chicken and duck) 0.87 phosphorus 7.7 carb

Bff play chicken cherish 0.71 phosphorus 7.6 carb

Bff play best buds chicken and beef 7.9 carb 0.9 phosphorus

Bff play chicken Checkmate. 7.7 carb 0.7 phos

On the Cat Wok 3.8 carb 0.74 phos

Thank you Janetnj .
I’ll take a look at these . I did do some reading last night and see he needs lower phosphorus.
Hopefully he will like some of these as he is a fussy one.

I hear you. My non diabetics kidneys are now in stage two so I'm looking for which ones she will eat. She's much pickier than cc was. So far she likes the chicken Checkmate.

I have a cat who was dx with 2nd stage CKD 2 years ago. I changed her food to low phosphorus/ low carb (because I had/have a diabetic and all my cats eat the same diet). If she eats any food higher in phosphorus, she vomits profusely. I was giving her a canned food low in carbs and phosphorus and, unbeknownst to me, the amounts changed. But I suspected it once she vomited. I checked into it, and that was it - the phosphorus and carb count had changed. After she was dx, I started preparing EZ Complete raw food, and that's worked for me (and my cats love it). I also use weruva canned foods and another brand -- Nature's Logic -- which also has a couple flavors that are low in both. Now, 2 years later, Celie is no longer in stage 2. In fact, although her values are still off and I know she will always be a cat with CKD, she isn't even considered to be in stage 1 any longer. I don't know what happened there, but I do believe diet saved her. It also helps that she will literally eat anything I give her and she's food motivated. I never worried about protein. In fact, it's no longer supported to give low protein (not until later stage renal failure, I believe) because it causes muscle wasting. My now 16 year old is doing fabulous, even with her hyperthyroidism.
Congrats on Blitzen's continued remission! I have two sugar babies right now. Jack went into remission 2 years ago and recently came out of it. He needs dental work and is scheduled for a cleaning and possible extraction in August. I'm really hoping it brings down his now high numbers. Way to go Blitzen! Remaining at those falls even with teeth that threatened to end the honeymoon.

My cat has had Diabetes & kidney disease for over 3 years. He just turned 19 yrs old. The best web site for Kidney disease: Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney ...

My Ravan also gets "Calcitriol" twice a week for his Kidneys. You can read about it on Tanya's web site.
Here's some important things you can do to help your kitty.

" For drinking water, distilled water is recommended because tap water and bottled water with added minerals can be hard on the kidneys." ( Water should always be available in Glass bowls only, no plastic. )

A new study conducted at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences confirms that normal weight cats who consume a dry food diet are at an increased risk of diabetes mellitus.

The Truth About Dry Cat Food - The Conscious Cat

My vet told me that dry food is bad for the kidneys. He also said that it leaves hard particles on the teeth and gums by causing inflammation and gum disease. Cats are carnivores so they eat MEAT not grains, veggies, berries. he said can food, while not perfect, is better.

Best of luck to you and Blitzen!

I'm used to seeing Phosphorus as a % . If the canned food you you recommended is in % then some of it would be kinda high in Phosphorus phosphorus level under 0.5%. No complete non-therapeutic food can be that low, but you should aim to get as close to that as you can.

The Steak Frites would be close to the recommended Phosphorus. Or you can add a Phosphorus binder. Aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3, is the best choice of the aluminium-based binders.(from Tanya's web site)

These are all regular foods not therapeutic kidney diets. The therepudic perscription diets are not diabetes friendly.... Way too high in carbs. The ones I listed are all under 1% phosphorus. You need a balance of low carb and low phosphorus.

My cat can't tolerate phosphorus binders. They made her so sick that she stopped eating for a couple of meals, and that NEVER happens with Celie. I'll never do that again.

My 2 cats were raised on a Raw diet but sometimes they'll eat canned.

Lisa Pearson's Food Chart lists low Phosphorus below 200

Wellness Turkey Pate is 4% carbs 200 phosphorus
Wellness core Kitten pate Turk. chick & Livers 8% carbs 215 Phos.
Organix Chick 4% carbs 182 Phos. Turk. 5% carbs 193 Phos. Soulistic Moist & Tender Turk 6% carbs 178 Phos.

When the Phos goes down the carbs go up!

So Blitzen had his one week post op on Friday and sent home with more antibiotics although everything looked great. Vet wants him on 2.5 mm of antibodies for a total of 20 days and gabapentin for a total of two weeks , he also is just now about to finish up his 10 days of Buprenex.
Does this seem like a long time to be on all these meds? For some reason today he has been vomiting, he did get out a good size fur ball finally but threw up again. Not sure what’s going on …any ideas or thoughts?
