Switching from Prozinc to Lantus question

Need feedback from people that used Prozinc and switched to Lantus. I’ve been talking with my vet about switching. My boy has been on Prozinc for 6 months and still not regulated. He has been a difficult case for my vet and she has reached out to the feline diabetes specialist at University of Georgia so I’m pleased she is seeking advice from a specialist. My cat, Cody is super, super picky with his food. He absolutely refuses to eat pate. I have tried ever low carb food made. Since he is prone to ketones I can’t fight him over it to much and have to go with the lowest carb food he will eat. He also get Dr. Elsey’s Clean Protein chicken, which has been our saving grace. He has neuropathy also and gets Zobaline daily. Sorry for the long post, just wandering if a change from Prozinc to Lantus has helped other difficult to regulate cats. Thanks

Hello and welcome. How many units of Prozinc is Cody on? I have seen some very successful switches. @Jay Dee and her Snuggie being one of the recent ones.

Hi and welcome! We were on ProZinc from 12/21/20 thru 5/10/21. We were up and down the doses - maxed at 6u and only saw a week or so of happy numbers. Things definitely improved once we switched to Levemir. We went with Lev because we knew he would likely need a higher dose and several here had suggested Lev may sting less when at higher doses. We saw an immediate improvement, altho it did take some time to get him regulated. I’m still not sure we *are, but we have seen a week of normal and near normal numbers. Feel free to browse my spreadsheet and ask questions - I’m by no means an expert but I will answer what I can!

ETA: we were diagnosed with acromegaly last week so that will explain why he needs the dose he does. 8u currently.

Hi Karen! Glad to see you over here from the Facebook group!

It's possible 3 1/2 was too much but 2U is not enough. Have you been home testing or just taking him into the vet for curves?

Also, if dose increases were made by whole units (or sometimes even half units) it's possible that you skipped over what could have been a good dose for Cody.

It will help us to help you if you start keeping a spreadsheet of tests you get (and if you're not home testing, we can help you learn to do that too!). I sent you a message on FB if you want some help setting one up. Here are the instructions on setting up the spreadsheet if you want to give it a try!

If you do decide to switch to Lantus, you might want to do what most of us here do and buy it from Canada where it's 1/3 to 1/2 the price. Here's information on buying insulin from Canada

Keep asking questions! Everybody here will help you any way they can!
