The nightmare begins. My most dreaded holiday. July 4th. The entire week - a few days before and a few days after - we have a neighborhood full of people launching fireworks. A few were launched last night (6/29?). Both my dogs suffer from firework/storm anxiety. One will run through the house barking. The other is a true "basket case". She clings to me (or my Mom) for hours and hours, nightly, constantly pawing me or my Mom. I have to get under all the covers and put a pillow over my head. Sometimes, she desperately tries to get under my electronic bed. Getting stuck.

Anyway, my point is it will be very difficult to test Susie at night. She will be hiding from the frenzy. I may have to add extra food to her nighttime schedule. This is my first July 4th with her being diabetic. I'll do the best I can. Fireworks are legal on July 4th here but all the other days they are not. Sheriff's office says they don't have the manpower to stop all the fireworks in the unincorporated areas of my county.

Her big drop, from AMPS to +2, was what I had expected yesterday. Wonder why it happened today and not yesterday? Any thoughts?

With that big of a drop you should feed some MC or HC to slow her down.

I hate dealing with fireworks. All you can do is the best you can in testing Susie. If you need to feed HC food at night to carb her up to keep her safe, just do it.

I'm not sure why she had such a dramatic drop this morning. I hope she slows down and surfs for you. Keep MC and HC food handy in case you need it.

Yes, that was my gut feeling but I only fed 2 tsp l/c at +2. She is now at 44 so I gave her 1 fat tsp of h/c and will check again in about 15 minutes at +3.

There it is, the drop! Susie was kind enough to hold off until morning to do it so you could sleep last night! Cats like to keep us guessing. Congrats on the reducie to 2u!!

Rex hated fireworks. I'm thankful he got to miss out on this season. That's the silver lining. My neighbors are horrible about lighting off fireworks at 2 am during the week.

Any time you see a big drop like that, especially early in the cycle, it's a good idea to feed higher carb food to try and slow it down. I hope she comes up a little higher and surfs safely.

We have been in quarantine for months and all the young ppl from my complex buy fireworks and set them off for fun … never realized it could affect the numbers !!! I know first day back with diagnosed diabetes the fire alarm went off and all the fireman arrived … I had to leave my apt with 2cats and the only things I took were money’s diabetes stuff hahahahaa thinking back on that day I was a total mess hahahaha hope it all works out maybe try leaving a tv or radio on so it’s not sooo scary

Looks like she wants that reduction. It's not surprising that she going down the dosing ladder fast. They usually do once they break through that glucose toxicity.

I am so grateful she waited until the morning but I wasn't expecting this big a drop after yesterday's results. She sure takes a long time to settle into a dose. The fireworks really make me mad. I feel so badly for all the animals and birds that have to deal with them. Also sad for young children, folks with PTSD and for those that have to get up in the morning to go to work. Again, I am sorry your Rex is gone even if he is missing the fireworks.

Sounds like a scary situation for you and your kitties with the fire alarm. You were smart to remember diabetes stuff. I always have a fan on at night. Can't sleep without it. Might try the TV because I get no sleep anyway.

She got back to greens on the 5th cycle. That's not long.

Breaking through glucose toxicity can be a wild ride. Be grateful for the little breaks in between the dives.

If you don't normally feed at +10, I wouldn't worry about it. You can prop her up at PMPS with some mc if you want. It wouldn't hurt anything.

You got this! Obviously I'm not going to advise, but curious, how long does she go without food happily? So you're at +10 and I assume don't want a food induced reading in two hours, no food right before +10?

Yes, the "no food in two hours prior to a shot" is usually recommended. Sometimes if a kitty is really low around +10 it is advised to feed just a little so you don't have to deal with a low preshot and possible "called for reduction". Usually, on a slow day, I feed Susie 1.5 oz l/c at AMPS and .75 oz of l/c at +3 and then another .75 oz of l/c at +5 or +6. Depending on her nadir (but not always). At night I will feed the 1.5 oz l/c at PMPS. Then I will feed about .75 oz of l/c at +2 and again at +4 or +5. I make sure that Susie gets a minimum of 6 oz of food a day. However, on days when she goes low, like today, she gets a little more food because I am "feeding the curve" to make sure she doesn't fall too low. This includes medium carb food (a small amount) if she is in the 50s or high carb food if she drops below 50. Most normal days she will go from +5/+6 to PMPS without food. I always have the freeze dried treats to give her a few of during the day.

Hi Summer I'm glad her PMPS came up blue. If you have to feed some MC or HC tonight so be it. Congrats on the reduction. Sane here in N.J. with these dam fireworks.
I have no idea why they ever legalized them. They can stick these fireworks where the sun don't shine. I hope you can get some sleep tonight.
Obviously they don't take into consideration that fireworks affect pets, people with PTSD . ♥
