Ashfur amps 376 new dose question- think I made a mistake reducing

So I upped his dose (6/12 PMdose) and Monday 6/14 night he finally broke his "bounce" and the climb down he had was faster than I have ever experienced with him. Nothing would slow it except HC (27%)food and a lot of it (2 cans total all night). I had to feed it to him throughout the night because I panicked and was trying to avoid a low. I'm not used to a drop that sudden and that fast. Usually his normal LC food slows it down to some degree.

So was that what I was supposed to do? I then lowered his dose thinking if I didn't intervene with the HC food he would have certainly went way way low. And I can't always be home to help a fall like that because of my work schedule. BUT then I re-read the sticky about reductions and he didn't fall too low and I got to thinking that maybe that is what other people do? feed low carb on the bounce days and then on the days they actually fall they feed MC & HC to help the fall down be less brutal? OR does needing to feed HC food indicate the dose is too strong?

Or is sugar use the only indication of a dose being too strong? and at what point do you NOT intervein and allow a dose to take it's natural course (so you know if they are earning a reduction or not). VERY difficult for me to do because he has that freestyle libre on so I always know where His BG is at and I'm constantly checking on him to avoid any SCARY numbers.

I'm literally so new to seeing any numbers under 100 so I really could use all this information now. Because whether or not this scares the CRAP out of me ( IT SO DOES) - it's happening - and I WILL GET THIS DOWN.

First, breathe. :bighug: With SLGS a reduction was earned because he fell under 90. Any time there a drop under 90 you reduce. He will continue on this dose for 7 days unless another reduction is earned. Try and remember that normal bg numbers are 50-100 whenever you see numbers in that range so you don’t panic. Cats that are not diabetic and those who have gone into remission often test in the 50’s. Those who follow TR shoot 50 and over once they have data.

Hi! With TR you didn't need to reduce the dose.
The goal is to eventually get him down into blues and greens and keep him there. However, I am very sympathetic with how scary it is when they dive down, and all of us have panicked under the same circunstances.
It is really helpful when kitties don't do this, and we can learn their patterns slowly so we know what to do. But we have the kitties that we do....
I believe the only way to learn how to managesuch circumstances is to get more experience with these events. You can see in my SS that I feed hercules 30% carb and 20% carb regularly, because he can be a crazy diver and after much trial and error we figure out that reading his +1.5 helps figure out when he will dive and I pull out the Hc as soon as I know it is going to happen. So, I think if you can, it would be better to give him more time at 1.75 to see if he can settle into that dose and show you more low numbers. It will also give you a chance to learn how he responds to carbs, and when he dives. Of course, you need to be confortable and prepared to support him on the days he decide to dive. If he is diving all the time, and you are needing to use lot of Hc everyday, than is probably a good idea to reduce the dose. But as many people say here, when they earn a reduction, they will go below the threshold despite all our efforts.

Sorry, not sure if I am helping, but if nothing else I am bumping this for more experienced eyes to look at it.

It's a little confusing because your SS says SLGS, but your signature says you started TR on 5/31. Would you mind changing the dosing method on the top of your spreadsheet?

This sticky note on the landing page of the forum is really helpful for handling low numbers, though of course it's all very abstract until you find yourself in the situation. Whenever you get a number that's below your comfort zone, you should post here and ask for guidance. Usually someone is around who can help you figure out what to feed and when to test again. :bighug:

YES this helps me -- that was what I was looking to hear. I was confused if I was supposed to do that or not. THANK YOU makes total sense.

I'm pretty good at stopping his curve. a little too good. I think that is my problem. I get scared and I tend to over feed him and jump the gun. Then I back off the dose and BOOM here we are in high numbers again. So my concern was that I was not supposed to be stepping in as much as I do. For example if I see him going down and he is already at 80 then I know how to stop him from progressing. I guess I'll find out when the dose is too strong when I CANT stop him from progressing with HC food alone. I think that makes sense to me.

Thank you.

I of course reduced but I am trying to follow TR (just not doing the best job at it). I changed my SS to match now. So I'll go back up to the 1.75 this weekend when I have 3 days off again from work so I can see what will happen. Here we go again :) Now I know that I can stop it with the HC food. So not going to panic as much. I've made big steps this week so I'm giving myself a little break on this one.

Well, you don't want to stop the curve. You want to FEED the curve and keep the cat surfing in green numbers to allow the pancreas to heal and prevent sky high bounces. Here's a simple breakdown:

Numbers 60 and above: feed low carb (0-10%)
Numbers between 50 - 59: feed medium carb (11-15%)
Numbers below 50: feed high carb (>16%)

Here's a condo on Manipulating the Curve for more details.

If that is your biggest mistake you are brilliant! Keep posting and asking for help. Pretty soon you will help others.

Thank you for your kindness. Appreciate the support and confirmation. I will return to the 1.75 dose!

Thank you for posting this! I don't know how many times you have to go through this before you stop panicking, even only a little. I think the adrenaline kicks in - I know I don't exactly panic now like I used to, but definitely feel myself kick into gear and all the things you know fly out of your brain, including remembering to read the stickys you have bookmarked AND printed AND stuck to the fridge next to the hypo kit!

Good luck with Ashfur, you are doing well!
