Cat water fountain recommendations

Does anyone use a cat water fountain they recommend? Howie stopped drinking water out of his dish several months ago so I mix water into his food (but not too much as he hates “soup”!). He also gets 3 mini meals/cycle in an auto feeder but has recently stopped eating them unless I’m home and feeding him (bad habit!). Unfortunately, this means even less water throughout the day. He pees probably 1-2 times every 24 hours so with the heat of summer here, he needs his fluids which is why I’m considering a water fountain. I appreciate your help!

I would like to weigh in on a fountain selection. My cats have used the green and white Catit fountain with the yellow daisy on top. I have had no problems with the functionality. That said, the filters have become an ongoing issue. I was ordering filters that fit the Catit from Amazon for 2 years. Then suddenly, they began to leak carbon which would contaminate the water pretty quickly. The seller replaced them for free, but the issue continued. I began ordering filters made by Catit via Chewy. The same thing happened. Either they leaked carbon right away or the yellow gel beads would escape. I was cleaning the fountain every 3-4 days but sometimes after 24 hours, there would be black sediment in the water. I took the problem to other users and was advised to thoroughly rinse the filters before using, something I was already doing. I discussed this with Catit customer service and sent photos of the leakage. They opened a case to investigate. As far as I know, the filters still have issues. So I am looking for a different brand fountain. In the meantime, I cut out the carbon sections of the filter before using.

I have 2 different fountain bowls. Both are auto shut off for low water levels. I like the Top Paw small flowing fountain (50ozs) the best of the two.

Any tips or tricks to getting Howie to actually know what the fountain is and use it? I got it set up and he looked at it for 2.1 seconds and walked away. I read somewhere not to put water by their food, so it’s not (and I don’t have an outlet by his food area anyway). He hasn’t physically drank water from a dish in more than 6 months, so drinking isn’t in his habits (but it needs to be with how hot it is as). I still add water to his food.
I just hope I didn’t waste money on this like the floor full of cat toys he has! Thanks!

My Dixie was used to drinking still water from a cup, but when I got the fountain, she still didn't touch it. I tried putting her cup right next to the fountain, tried turning off the fountain, putting it on low, etc. I then put the cup back to its original spot and just left the fountain on low. I think maybe a week or two later was when I first saw her drink from the fountain! Was very exciting hahaha :D

My experience seems consistent with lots of other reviews I've read, so just keep in mind that it might take a few weeks for Howie to get used to it.

I had the same experience @FarmKitty (Dixie) by leaving both the original bowl and the fountain next to each other. The transition was much easier.

I wish Howie drank water out if the bowl I always put out (in hopes he would maybe drink). I think this is an uphill battle but I have to believe he will use it someday! Thanks!

My cats like the sound of running water, so that made them curious about it. Maybe place a treat or a favorite toy nearby initially?

I originally got a fountain because one of my cats was an inveterate faucet sucker. And the fountain proved a good substitute, though I do now have a gal who will occasionally mosey over to the kitchen sink in hopes of a drip.

This might or might not work for you, but if once in a while you pick the cat up and set him down next to the fountain, he might catch on that it is meant for him.

And I'd second the suggestion of keeping some treats next to the fountain.

Try elevating the bowl several inches that may help.

You guys are the best in offering suggestions to try! Google also said to set it out without turning it on for 1-2 days for him to get used to it in his space. I will definitely be trying treats and trying to hang out with him near it too. I read it could take 1-2 weeks for cats who don’t normally drink water. I appreciate you all!

I have two fountains for my cats, one is the Avalon cat fountain which is the only one Duke my diabetic cat uses for some reason.

And this one, the cat mate fountain which just gathers dust as neither of the cats will use it, i don't know why, maybe because it's plastic or it makes less of a water running sound i just don't know.
