@Bandit's Mom I increased Phoenix to 10.25 units yesterday. At +8 this morning, his BG had dropped to 75. I fed him fancy feast gravy lovers beef feast and his BG went up to 112 after 30 minutes. I checked him again at +10 106. I thought he was safe to wait an hour to check again. At + 11 44. I just gave him some honey and will check again in 20 minutes. What should I do about his injection?

It has been 20 minutes. Phoenix's BG is now 102 after the honey. What do I do about his insulin injection? It is due in 30 minutes.

We would have to wait 2 hours from the honey to see if you can still shoot. So that would be 1 hour after your normal shot time.

Let me know what the test at +11.50 is. Am wondering if the +11 was a faulty strip...

I don't think it was a faulty strip. Phoenix has had a tendency to drop fast in the past.

Ok, thank you. I am going to check after 30 minutes since he drops so fast. I will let you know his BG in an hour. Thank you
Ok. Will watch out for his +12. Next time he drops below 50 at the end of the cycle (+11 and later), see if he will come up with just a spoon of LC.

I forgot to mention that when I gave Phoenix the honey, I spread it on top of 2 chicken hearts to get him to eat it. That was at + 11. So, will I need to wait 2 hours to give his insulin instead of 1 hour? I really don't want to skip a dose unless it is necessary.

This was the first time I have tried Phoenix with fancy feast. Years ago, he wouldn't eat it. I need to find the chart listing the carbs on the different varieties so I can get the ones I need.

Yes. 2 hour after honey would be safest. Bur if he starts zooming before that, we can shoot earlier. Let's see how it goes.

Is he at 135 @+12? Looks like he may be good to shoot after a test at +12.5.
Btw, the 44 is missing from your SS.

Since he is a long term diabetic, you hold the dose. He hasn't earned a reduction.

Long term diabetics - more than one year since diagnosis
  • reduction *earned* after a single drop below 40 mg/dL for those following TR, or
  • reduction *earned* after 3 drops between 40 - 50 mg/dL on three separate days for kitties who have shown they do not hold reductions well and following TR, or
  • reduction *earned* when the cat regularly has its lowest BGs in the normal range of a healthy cat (50 - 80 mg/dL) and stays under 100 mg/dl overall for at least one week and following TR.
  • reduction *earned* after a single drop below 90 mg/dL for those following SLGS.

Hi Susan,

It is now 2 hours since the honey? Just checking if you got another test?
Yes, I just took another test at 2 hours past honey. His BG is 134. Do you think it would be ok to give his insulin? It is 1 hour past his usual injection but I have no problem waiting if I need to.

I think it should be okay provided you can monitor him for the first few hours of the cycle.

Thank you, I agree. I can monitor him all day. Thank you for the information on the food as well. I don't know what I would do without you. You are the best ! Have a great evening!
