Of course, when it rains, it pours!!

I joined the CKD group on FB, and they disagree with my vet (that's happening to me a lot). Looking at Gryphen's numbers, they feel her kidneys are already compromised, not that she's just heading that direction. Boooooooo!

So, now I deal with that, too, I suppose. I know lots of people here also have that issue; I just wasn't expecting it. It's never been brought up as a possibility before.

Of course, she wouldn't touch the low carb/low phos wet foods, and didn't actually want to eat at dinner at all, so I skipped her PM shot. She ate well this morning, but has been eating a ton of grass today, so she must not feel well.

On a positive note. Alphy was in the blues all day today. I'll take the small wins whenever I can.

Hi Bobbi,

Sorry the CKD FB group didn’t have very good news for you. Ruby is in stage 2 so I feel for you. In addition to diet changes you might also think about doing subQ fluids, though Ruby’s internal medicine specialist doesn’t think she needs them yet whereas her primary vet wants her doing fluids once a week. This is why you need your vet behind you on the diagnosis, to give you some guidance. If you can bring Gryphen back for another round of blood work in 6-8 weeks I’m sure you will have a better idea of which direction the CKD is headed. In the meantime, try to feed that low carb low phos food and get as much hydration in her as you can to try to get some of those values down. Having on hand some anti-nausea meds and appetite stimulants can also help.

Sorry to hear Gryphen is off her food. If you got her kidneys figured out early, it's a good thing. What low carb/low phos foods did you try? It took some experimenting for me to find what worked and Neko liked. For a long time I was making home made with the EZComplete premix, but after a year or so she went off that too.

I wouldn't add fluids until the vet suggests it. They should check her heart out before starting fluids. Ask me how I know. Starting fluids sent Neko into heart failure. Adding water to food or oral fluids are fine.

What low carb/low phos foods did you try

I tried a few of the lc/lp foods from Weruva that the group had on their list. I have a few more to work my way through, but this is the second time trying some of them, as I tried almost all flavors when the girls were first diagnosed with diabetes. Of course, it turns out that the wet foods they will eat (in general) are higher in phos.

I have been mixing the wet with water, so at least I've been doing that right.

She won't eat any of the Tiki cat (no one will), and I can't find some of the others locally.

Having on hand some anti-nausea meds and appetite stimulants can also help.

I'm definitely going to call the vet about these tomorrow. Just got woken up with another round of vomiting (bile/foam). Usually she'll eat a bite after an episode like that, but she's refusing everything this time. She hasn't eaten since yesterday morning.

Note: I just got Gryphen to eat a bit of the YA Zero Mature. I switched to the YA Zero Mature LID because I was concerned about allergies. I tried just about everything I had in the cupboard, and the non-LID did the trick. At least she has something in her tummy.

Fingers crossed that she'll eat breakfast in a few hours so I can give her insulin.
