Thank you for than suggestion Margaret! I will be taking him back to hopefully my reular vet in two weeks. The drama was handled at urgent care and then an animal hospital so my regular vet was not involved. Seeing as he's left the hospital now it's sadly too late to get the prescription for the antibiotic from the doctor who treated him.

Unfortunate timing that my regular vet is going to be moving to a different clinic and is only starting at the new place in May. So still need to figure out how we'll handle this. Buddy gets incredibly stressed when crated and travelling and I can't put him through more trips than is absolutely necessary, but I will for sure mention the possibility of liver infection and ask about that Veraflox prescription.

Buddy is a lot more lively today! Appetite not quite back to normal, but we even had some lizard chasing happen this afternoon. Nobody was harmed!

Actually, you could still call the ER clinic and get success! If he was only seen in the past day or so, they may be willing to consider it. Or if you call your own vet to say you'd like to try it in the meantime before his 2 week check, you may get it that way too! Especially seeing as your vet is transferring clinics, she may really understand the need to not delay. It's a pretty typical treatment for high ALT, to rule out a liver infection with the antibiotics. Good luck!

Buddy's appetite is still not 100% but he's getting there. The hospital receptionist decided to be a pain and wouldn't give the antibiotic. Just kept insisting I had to speak to my primary care physician about that. My primary vet is in the precarious situation where she's leaving her old clinic, so it's a bit tricky but hopefully we'll get it sorted today. She suggested we use Metronidazole for Buddy. We're also using the small amount of Omeprazole antacid we got from the hospital and some Coca and Luna liver support powder that I received yesterday.

My heart is warm with all the love and support for Buddy on the forum. Thank you all so much for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers.

I’m not sure if it has been mentioned, but you might look into giving Buddy the liver supplements Denosyl (s-adenosylmethionine or SAM-e) and Marin (silymarin aka milk thistle).

A number of years ago my dog went into catastrophic liver failure and nearly died. The docs at the vet school started the supplements immediately (along with other treatments, of course) and we pulled her through. I also used both supplements with Charlie, my diabetic cat who had liver problems. Back then, they were two separate pills, one which was taken with food, one which had to be taken at least an hour before or after food.

I believe Marin is no longer manufactured but there’s now a product on the market that combines the two called Denamarin. It does not require a prescription.
 
I'm glad to hear Buddy will get some meds. Your vet's hypothesis with using Metro will be a gut infection. I hope you get success with this! If not, go for the Veraflox (more system-wide and good next step if you can't rule in a gut infection). That is my 2 cents.

So wonderful to see pictures of sweet Buddy boy. He is looking GOOOOD!

I have been using Denamarin for my cat Darcy since his hepatic lipidosis and suspicious spots on his liver. It’s a great liver healing combo.

Buddy looks happy! I loved seeing these photos. Metronidazole is quite anti-inflammatory as well as anti-microbial so I hope it helps. Dear Buddy, we love you!
 
I hope you are able to get the medications worked out.
I dont blame Buddy for wanting that hospital smell off of his beautiful coat of fur. He sure is beautiful.
I am so glad to see Buddy up for taking his bath :joyful:
