WOULD LIKE TO START LANTUS

I'm on the third vile of prozinc, no improvement. 6 units twice a day. Want to start back on lantus. How many units would I start? Thanks.

Since Raymond is already on another insulin, we usually take into consideration the previous insulin and how it was working in deciding on a starting dose for Lantus. Is there any chance you can get some night time tests in over the next several days? Right now, you are missing half the data, and we often find that some kitties like to go lower at night.

In the meantime, I'll tag @Wendy&Neko , since there are some conditions that can cause a kitty to need more insulin, and I'd like to get her perspective.

Many cats drop lower at night and then bounce high in the morning. I agree with Christie on the need for some night tests. A before bed test would help.

Ok. I have taken +3 PMPS. Always high no matter what I feed or do. Thanks. I understand about other tests I can run, unfortunately, I'm tapped out on money. Doing what I can. He was on Lantus for three weeks. Vet said he wasn't responding and sold me Prozinc. Thanks.

I understand. I would maybe suggest giving Lantus another try. With all those high numbers TR would be good if you can get a few more tests in to see if you can bring the numbers down. However, with higher doses Lantus can sting. What about giving Levimir a try? It’s another depot insulin and seems better for cats on higher doses.

Ok, thanks. I wanted to finish the lantus before it expires. Will ask vet about levimir. He isn't too educated on FD. Raymond James has been to ER, and two vets. As you know, I've received more help here, UGGGG!!!

Were his ER visits because he had ketones or diabetic ketoacidosis? Just asking because if there is a history, it would a good idea to get some Ketostix to watch for ketones in his urine. Unfortunately, if there is dry food in the mix, we would recommend following the SLGS dosing method. If you can get him off the dry, that would be ideal, although I appreciate some kitties are hard to convert to we food only. The good news is that Stella and Chewy's is fine to keep on the menu ;)
