Well, we started out this morning with an AMPS that was at least not in the 400s, but I knew that with a dose increase and no R insulin to help out that it wasn't going to be a very good a.m. cycle. And it wasn't.

I've added in the R this evening, but still am not expecting much. He always goes higher with a dose increase (and frequently the second day is worse for him than the first, but now we hopefully can get help from the R).

Speaking of 30 units Lantus and then additional R.... we are now up to 30 units of Lantus. That's really about all I can afford. If a 10 L vial holds 1000 units total, and he's getting a total of 60 units per day, that vial will only last for 16 days. I can't go up to the really high doses that I have heard people using and still have money left to pay for food, vet bills for Darcy and the other cats around here. So I will have to limit the Lantus to 30 units and hopefully the Cabergoline will soon start helping out and reducing his insulin requirements. I paid $240 for the Cabergoline, although it is a large bottle and should last for some months. Soooo.... where do we go from here?

How do you feel about spending more money on R? Suki came to a similar spot with her Crystal, but for her it was two syringes worth of L she didn't want to go above, so she compromised by using more R. Here is her Crystal's SS if you want a look. The advantage of R at higher doses is that when/if cabergoline starts to kick in, you aren't left with as high a Lantus depot. The other possibility for you is the switch to Levemir, which makes a difference for some higher dose cats.

Happily, I got a 289 (thanks to the wonderful R) at +3. He ate after this, so probably will go up, but he may come back down again.

Yes. I do want to switch to Levemir. I know that Darcy doesn't complain or flinch or ANYTHING when I shoot 30 units into him... but I am hoping for maybe a little improvement with Lev. And since I know that this vial of Lantus won't last long, I think I will call my vet this week and ask for an Rx for Lev. I'll send it off to Mark's and order so I'll have it on hand. I hope the timing works out. I'll buy more Lantus if it won't... I won't run out like last time. I'll look at that spread sheet. Thank you so much! I really appreciate all of your input.

@Wendy&Neko I looked at Crystal’s spreadsheet and I see a lot of variability in how much R was given. Seems like it was all over the place.
