Help! Can I use U100 needles with Lantus pen?

My cat Miles was diagnosed with diabetes in late November. Since that time, I've had him on vetsulin, 1 unit twice daily (more than that makes his lethargy worse) but I'm now ready to switch to Lantus. Is there a way to use U100 needles with Lantus pens?

Miles preshot number this morning was 435, clearly in the red. I got him into a new vet this morning who specializes in felines and I'm so thankful to have found her. He's lost way too much weight (almost 25%) but is eating three times the amount he used to. She suspects an underlying condition (ie: hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis or triaditis) is causing the uncontrolled diabetic symptoms.

Miles has not improved on vetsulin so she strongly recommended switching to Lantus. I have the Lantus in hand but no Lantus pen needles, thus my question. I'm almost tapped out financially (spent almost 3G in the last six weeks) so I'm hoping it's possible to use the needles I have.

Thank you for any help you can provide :)

Hi Tillie and welcome!

Yes, you can use U-100 syringes with Lantus pens. See the attached photo where it has U-100 written on the box for vials.

In case you need it, you can check out this sticky for info on drawing from the Lantus pen with a syringe: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...info-proper-handling-drawing-fine-dosing.151/

Thank you for such a quick response! So it's ok to poke u100 needles through the rubber valve at the tip of the pen and just draw it out? And it won't affect the remaining insulin in the pen?

I just swapped to using syringes with the Lantus pen, it's worked perfectly fine :) almost feels like I'm more in control of the amount I inject.

Hi @Miles & Tillie Mom - can you clarify your question? I want to make sure we're keeping Miles safe....are you asking if you can use your Vetsulin u-40 syringes with Lantus? I don't think you are but I just want to rule it out so Miles isn't overdosed.

So it's ok to poke u100 needles through the rubber valve at the tip of the pen and just draw it out?
Yes that's correct. That link Katherine posted has good tips. Make sure you overdraw a little bit and don't push insulin or air back into the pen (refine your dose outside of the pen).

Do you need help with a lantus starting dose? if you have any BG readings from vetsulin, I'm sure @Wendy&Neko will stop by when she's online to help weigh in on switching from vetsulin to lantus.

The You Tube video in the sticky is a helpful demonstration of how to draw from the pen:

Yes, definitely! I have only ever used U100 syringes with my boy's Lantus pen. There is a super handy chart somewhere for measuring each dose the same as sometimes the marking on the syringe can be a bit wonky. I'm sure one of us can hunt up the chart if you'd like it.

All of us end up using U-100 syringes with Lantus. We often change dose by 0.25 units at a time, so getting U-100 syringes with 1/2 unit markings is best.

Good to see you are home testing. If you'd like help with dosing from this forum, it's best if you put your blood sugar test values in a spreadsheet we can all see. Instructions are here: FDMB Spreadsheet Instructions:
