We just got back from the vet. Mo was very well behaved this time. He has been referred to a feline specialist 20 minutes away finally. This means we can talk to someone about his diabetes that actually knows what they're doing. She also put in the referral that I wanted to discuss different insulins. I'm really excited about this referral. It might take a few months to actually get an appointment though :(

His fructosamine level was 690. No change from when he was diagnosed. Proof that the insulin isn't working.

The vet checked that I was injecting Mo properly by shaving the back of his neck and seeing how I did it. She said it was fine, but I needed to draw back when I put the needle in to make sure I didn't get blood or air? I wasn't taught that by the other vet so we will try it. Mo likes to bite me while I inject him so we will see how that goes. But she has asked me to half his dose tonight and tomorrow morning and see how he goes just in case i've been injecting the insulin wrong this whole time. It's good that we are ruling this out anyway.

The vet was telling me about how her kitty was hit by a car last week. So devastating. She was giving Mo cuddles and kisses, it was pretty cute. He just put up with it lol.

I hope you're all doing well :bighug:

Glad to hear Mo was on his best behaviour and you are making some progress towards seeing a vet who can actually help you. Bummer you couldn't Levemir sooner.

No one here does that - you've been shooting just fine. Not sure you need to cut the dose in half. Worst case you've been doing it wrong and actually get some good numbers out of him.

Me too. By the sounds of it, she hadn't even heard of Levemir. She said it can be tricky to find other insulins in NZ but I did find on here that someone from NZ mentioned that it was available in NZ. Maybe I'll push it harder next time.

That's good to know! It would be tricky for us to do anyway given that the lantus is probably stinging him and he gets aggressive.
I can understand why she wants to cut it in half to avoid potential hypo. But yeah, it's unlikely we have been doing it wrong this whole time.

Levemir is a human insulin too, just newer than Lantus. Google "Levemir in New Zealand" and you can find government pamphlets on using the Levemir pen.

Ahh I totally understand how frustrating it can be trying to switch insulin. I’m lucky I found this forum and so many people came to help and point out Protaphane wasn’t a good choice of insulin for cats in the first place. Hopefully you get an appointment with the specialist soon! :)

Getting referred to a specialist sounds like some progress. I really hope they can help with a switch to Levemir and that at the very least will support you doing TR with Mo. :bighug:

This forum is great, isn't it? :)

The vet said she would look into different insulins available in NZ but whether she does that or not is another thing. We have another appointment on Wednesday to discuss what happened when we inject Mo into the patch they shaved away for us. So I think I will push switching insulin then. By the sounds of it though, they don't have Levemir at the vet clinic and that's how we get our prescriptions for pets :(

Glad to hear you're getting progress of sorts for Mo. Hopefully you can get things on track soon!

I'm sure you've tried already, but I give Gremlin his insulin while he's eating and he doesn't notice at all. The only time he's ever paid attention was that one time I tried in his haunch instead of between the shoulders. Never again!

FYI. Ollie got aggressive when she hit 6 units lantus. Her original vet wouldn't script Levemir. Had to get it other ways until I found a new vet.

Glad you are getting to specialist. Hopefully soon.

Thank you :) We do it while Mo is eating. I think because he is on such a high dose he notices the Lantus "sting" so he can feel it. I'm glad your Gremlin doesn't notice it!
