12/11 Shadow PM +12 141 AMPS 150 +1 149 +7 221 +10 384

I had to work yesterday (12/10), so I was only able to get a PMPS 2 hours earlier than it should have been taken. Shadow still received his 5.5 units at his usual time. With his numbers being high all week, this AMPS of 141 is really a shock to me!

We did find a bag of donuts hidden in an extra room we rarely go into, so I think that had something to do with him going so high again (we were seeing some progress with his dose change to 5.5)

My question is should I stall for half an hour to see if his numbers go up, or is there a "safe" amount of Lantus to go ahead and give him with his breakfast? It is 3:30am here, so I'm afraid if I give him too much insulin he may go hypo while I'm sleeping.

Should I just feed him and skip this shot altogether? That part scares me as well, because his numbers have been high since he was diagnosed, so I'm also afraid of the risks of skipping his dose

Sorry nobody was around earlier. For future, though, in case there is someone around it is best that you edit your subject line: add the "?" prefix and then add something into your title like "....STALLING, NEED HELP PLEASE" to attract attention.

That 150 becomes your AMPS if you shot the 150. The 141 would be a +12.

Nice blue!

I see you decided to shoot a smaller dose. Just keep in mind that the depot from the 5.5U dose would still be in play for this cycle. But if you did have to leave for work in this scenario, you can always leave out MC and/or HC food for Shadow to keep him safe as long as he eats reliably. Yes, it may shoot his numbers high. But being high is much safer than going too low. Better too high for a day than too low for a minute.

I'd be getting an hourly test if you're around. If you post them I'll keep an eye out and let's see if we can get your boy to surf.

A little bit of housekeeping: your title is confusing. Can you please remove the 12/10 AM +10 390. I'm not sure what that means? I'm also confused by your spreadsheet. If Shadow received insulin for the 12/10 PM cycle, then you should enter the dose. Did you get any tests during that cycle?

Are you following SLGS or TR?

I'm worried that you got a +10 and shot insulin based on that rather than getting a PMPS and shooting based on the PMPS. I completely understand having to work and that can make things challenging. It isn't safe to shoot insulin without knowing what Shadow's BG number is at that moment. Cats can drop down in numbers quite a lot in two hours. Can the person who gives insulin to Shadow test him first? Is there a reason why they can't? Maybe we can help them with that.

For future reference when you are worried about shooting and decide to stall, try posting for help like I mentioned, then stall without food and retest every 15 - 20 minutes until you catch Shadow's numbers rising.

I have decided on the SLGS option since my last post.

I'm having issues with my Google Sheets app where sometimes it'll put me into "View Only" mode and I cannot update.

Shadow receives shots at 3:30AM/PM
He received 5.5 yesterday afternoon (12/10) at 3:30 PM and the only test I was able to get for him was at 1:45 PM before I left to go to work for the day.

The only other person I have helping me is my mother and she has refused to help me test him. She doesn't want to learn, she doesn't want to poke him in the ear, and she doesn't want to hear the rest of any conversation about it.

I'm grateful enough that she is helping me give him his insulin shots while I am not here. I love my dude and would love to test him any time and every time, but I also have to be able to support myself..and by doing so, I work 10-13 hour shifts. I work in the restaurant and bar industry if that helps to explain the long and late hours.

I'm clearly a novice, but looking at his spreadsheet, it looks like his nadir is around +7, so I figured being at almost 400 at his +10 was a good enough sign to have my mom give him a full dose on his shot.

The same thing will happen again today. I work at 3pm, will be leaving by 2pm at the latest, and he is due to receive his next dose at 3:30pm.
The nearest test I will have to this next dose will be just before 2pm.

I completely understand having to work long hours and it must be so stressful to be away from him for those long stretches.
I'm not experienced enough to offer you any advice in regards to shooting two hours after checking his BGs, and I'm definitely not here to judge.:bighug:

Awesome that you've made a decision! Since you've chosen SLGS, would you mind putting it into your signature and at the top of your spreadsheet? This way, when you do need help, we don't have to ask you. :)

His +7 with the 2U I gave him this morning was at 221. I'm still stuck in "View Only" on my spreadsheet, so I am not able to update it at this time.

Another question as well: I will be out of town Sunday night and Monday morning/afternoon

Since I will not be home to test him for those two cycles (Sun PM, Mon AM), would we be better off skipping those two doses altogether or possibly just doing 1U both of those times just to keep some insulin in him to lessen the chance of DKA?

Do you check Shadow for ketones regularly?

Usually the more experienced people (not me:D)will help by suggesting a dose that a pet sitter can give while you're traveling. Seeing as you're going away in two days, it may be close enough to start discussing it. I'll tag a couple of people for you and if they're around they will help. @Wendy&Neko @tiffmaxee
If you're around...Christina Marie could use some help with setting a travel dose. Thank you:bighug:

Do you know how to edit the title of your thread, Christina Marie? Just in case you don't, let me explain. Because the more experienced people are super busy and are often just scanning the forum to see who needs help based on their title.

To edit:
Below the title and and all the way to the far right is a little down arrow and it says "thread tools". Click that and select "edit title". When the box pops up, select the "?" prefix from the left drop down, and then add something into the end of your title like "help with vacation dose please" to attract some attention. Then save the title and it will update.

I'll do some screenshots if you need more help with this!

Honestly, not sure you have to reduce the dose much at all if you are gone for a few days. Typically if someone is going away on a holiday and a petsitter is taking over, we look to find a dose that has blue nadirs. If you are really worried, you could back him down to 5 units. That makes the dose on the line and easier for your mother to draw. Of course, the cycle count will start again for 5.5 units when you get back.

Thank you. I will have her give him 5 units this Sunday PM and Monday AM just to make sure since she isn't testing him. I wasn't worried about his dose until I got a random 141 thrown at me. I panicked this morning since I usually go to sleep shortly after his AM dose.

I found how to change the title! Thank you! I was trying to figure that out about my previous posts because I hadn't titled them correctly and wanted to go back and fix them.
Hopefully I did this new one right and it reflects the information correctly as well

141 is still a safe number, but you probably would have felt better about it if it had been in the middle of the cycle. In hind sight, would have been good to get another test last night. I'd be rich if I had a dollar for every time a cat surprises there caregiver in the morning like that. Over time, experience, and with data, you learn to shoot those lower preshots.
