Hello, since i was off today and we have the vets tomorrow i wanted to try and do a bit of a curve to give the dr a better picture. Today is cycle 5 and he has cycle 6 in a few hours. Since he hasnt dropped below 300 do i then up it .5 units it looked like? I'll of course ask the vet tomorrow. Im still waiting on a pee sample from oj so i can check ketones. Were negative at last nights pmps but this morning i missed him in the box by a couple seconds so i tried dipping the stick in the litter. Looked between negative and trace but not sure if its from the clay or not. But they've been coming back on a weekly basis so im hoping i get another chance tonight to get it. I started him on CBD oil today since his pain meds ran out and i could only give him a half dose this morning. Im also trying to keep his face cleaned up. He had some chin acne thats been getting worse with him digging at it even with switching to metal bowls. This morning something must've popped and his chin was all bloody. Been using peroxide which he doesnt seem to mind and neosporin. He's still eating no problem today but seems a little meh

If you don's see anything below 300 tonight, you can increase by 0.5 units tomorrow, otherwise it's a 0.25 unit increase. Good luck with the new dose.

Have you tried warm compresses with the chin, to drain any acne? My vet has me use a dilute solution of hibitane on sores (about 10-15 to 1), apply for 5 minutes, dab on again for another 5 minutes and rinse off. Might be worth asking the vet for ideas.

If you are having problems getting urinary ketone tests, some people use ketone meters. Blood Ketone Meters Strips are pricey, but you aren't using them as often.
 
Thank you. I havent tried the compress yet. Between the tooth and me having to hold his head to give him gabapentin he's getting really annoyed with me doing anything by his face and He's definitely showing it. Usually i can get his ketones every day but today he's been lounging around a lot and i havent been able to catch him in the box since this morning. Ketones also show up sooner in the urine than blood correct? Hopefully if they were really trace this morning they'll give him fluids again tomorrow at the vet that will flush them out like they've been doing. I've been crying almost all day at the lack of progress we're making and i just feel like a complete failure
 
Actually, ketones show up in the blood first, then get flushed out with the urine.

You are doing what you can. :bighug::bighug::bighug: Hopefully the insulin increase will also help with the ketones. How is his appetite?
 
His appetite has been good. Today he ate 1 1/2 cans of fancy feast for breakfast and had another can split up and some boiled chicken for midday snacks. And he usually eats 1 1/2 - 2 cans for his dinner which he'll get in about half hr. My mom actually just came out to the garage where i am and said he's walking around crying for dinner so at least i know he'll be hungry when i go in. Maybe the not so active today is from the cbd i started today? I dunno.
And ahh okay so maybe it would be worth looking into. I can check them once a day during one of his ear pricks when i check his BG. I didnt see anything like that at my walmart, i'll have to check a different one or maybe target. Walmart didnt have the ketostix either but target did so thats where i've been buying them.
Im hoping the vet tomorrow has some different ideas or input.
 
Oj is at the vet now. They told me to fast him but give him any normal meds. This morning amps was 304. Was i right in giving him only half his normal dose as hes not going to be eating for hours?

Oj did fine today at the vet. He's such a good boy. He gained a little over half a pound since wednesday which is great. They gave him a shot of convenia for his bad chin acne thats been bloody lately as well as incase he has an infection elsewhere and i got more gabapentin, this time in pill form since he hated the liquid and it was a struggle. She re ran a full blood panel since it had been a month since his diagnosis. I'll get the results tomorrow and based on that she said i could potentially book a dental for next week. She said shes okay operating with higher numbers as long as hes still active, alert and has an appetite. She said the same for ketones. The last two times they showed up he was still active and eating a lot so she said they can present with ketones without having being acidotic. He also got a freestyle libre which im going to make another post about as i have some questions about that. He's definitely not happy with the shirt he has to wear and it does seem tight but i guess its to keep the sensor in place. He's walking around super stiff and grumpy looking. Didnt have a super appetite when he came home (was probably stressed out) but i got him to eat half a can when i came home from work no problem
 
Yup! She wanted to redo his blood because she said his liver and kidney numbers were a little elevated. So im hoping they go down. She told me to stick to the 3units twice a day while the libre is in incase im missing some lows. So i'll stay there for now. I gave her a multiple page printout of all his notes. Vet visits, meds, dosing, food, ketones, bg readings. She said it was super helpful so at least i went in prepared
