He has been on 2 units for 10 days now and his numbers are still too high. I am so disappointed that I messed up by skipping doses a few weeks ago when he finally had started dropping his numbers. I’m just not sure if he needs more insulin or what I need to do. My vet doesn’t want to give more than 2 units. She says if he needs more than that he needs to try a different insulin. I’m just not sure what to do. Any advice is appreciated.

I strongly disagree with your vet. A cat needs what it needs in terms of insulin. Once you hit the magic dose they either stabilize or earn reductions unless they are high dose cats or insulin resistance has set in him being in higher numbers too long. I don’t think he’s bouncing because you dint have black or even red preshots. I do want to know what is happening at night though. Chester is definitely going lower because your amps numbers are always lower than your PMPS bg. You need to get a test at +2. If it’s lower than the PMPS then set an alarm for a test at +5-7. You only have half of the picture. You say you are following SLGS based on your signature but you aren’t. Keith SLGS you need to do a 12 hour curve testing every 2 hours for a cycle or every 3 hours for 18 hours. I don’t see a single curve. Can you do one tomorrow?

I have been trying to get random tests done when possible. Unfortunately no one has been home during the day for the past couple of weeks to be able to get more than that done. He is still showing really high numbers when I do test him during the day. Why would the night time numbers be much different? Do they typically go lower at night? Also I chose the SLGS because it said to choose a method and I knew I was definitely not doing tight regulation so I assumed since their were only two choices that I was doing the other. I’m not very sure about all the rules yet. I have read a lot of the information but I feel like it is overwhelming. My husband is off work tomorrow so we should be able to get a curve done then.

Also, Chester has been on insulin since the end of July. His ss doesn’t show all of the doses he has been on and the changes we have made since then because I was following a Facebook groups advice at that time and was using their spreadsheet. When I started using the message board I was told it wasn’t necessary to input all of his past information. I am guessing that is why you think I am not following the SLGS method?

The reason why I said you don’t appear to be following SLGS is because you haven’t gotten any curves. Many cats drop at night. That’s why you will see people mention having a pj party. The fact that your amps is lower than the PMPS means Chester is going lower. We have no idea what his nadir at night is. From your tests I have no idea when he nadirs during the day either. It’s not necessarily at +6 or +7. Some cats nadir at +4. And others at the end of the cycle. Take a look at other people’s spreadsheets and you will see what I mean.

Absolutely cats very often go lower at night. It's very common to see them go low at night and bounce during the day. So daytime testing would tell you to increase the dose, and night time testing (even a +2 or +3) before bed is very helpful.

You are also holding doses longer than the 7 days that SLGS says. If you hold a dose that isn't giving good numbers very long, that allows glucose toxicity to develop. Meaning their body gets used to higher numbers and you have to raise the dose even more to get over it.

I rather suspect Chester need more insulin, but if you can get one or two night time tests, we can see for sure. That is, if you can't get that curve done.

We are just trying to figure out why he was getting the good low numbers at 1.75 units at the beginning of the month but he is not coming back down with us not skipping any more doses. Shouldn’t he have leveled back out without us having to increase more since he was getting low numbers before I messed up by skipping two shots?
