AMPS: 151 Should I dose or hold the lantus??

The vet told me to go up to 3 units about one week ago and I didn't do it because his diet wasn't regulated. He had been on Young Again Mature with FF Pate for several days but then broke into a bag of temptations treats. I explained it all in the chart below.

So for today Bombay hadn't eaten in about 5 hours. He was hungry at 0400 so i went ahead and checked his sugar. AMPS sugar was 151 . Normally I give his insulin at 0730. Should I recheck at 0730? or hold the dose for today? and check his sugar throughout the day?

This is his spreadsheet:

Looks like you're new to the LB&L forum? Did you post in Main Health first? That's usually where folks start so you can get all the basics set up.

At this point, just to answer your question this morning and without much history - I'd suggest you skip this dose.

There are too many unknowns for me to advise you on shooting ... I'll post this and then come back with some suggestions for you.

Thank you! I will hold this dose!

(Sorry if this comes thru several times im having technical difficulties!)

So just to clarify when you say 'hold this dose' we usually mean 'give the same amount that you've been giving'....are you saying you're going to give insulin this morning or not shoot at all?

oooh!!! I didn't realize 'hold this dose' meant to give the same amount! I wasnt going to shoot. OK so I should go ahead and give the dose that I gave yesterday.

No.

I want to be very clear.

Your AM reading is quite low for a newbie to give insulin.

DO NOT GIVE INSULIN.

In order to give you good advice, I need to see what kind of food Bombay is eating.
When did you switch (if you did) from dry food perhaps to what Bombay is eating now.

What other health issues concerns does Bombay have?

In your signature (that you'll get set up) you'll be able to put information like mine: A little history about your cat, type of food, meter, insulin.

Let me find the info on how to do that.

OK right! Oh my gosh I'm sorry for the confusion! I understand what you were explaining! I have not given the dose and will not shoot. I'm used to saying "hold a dose" when it means to not give. Thank you!!!! :) :) I'm reading the link you sent for the introduction.

Does kitty have any health issues (current or in the past)?
Food: What are you currently feeding kitty?
Any information about your cat which is important, but hasn't been covered above
Your country / timezone - this helps for timezone specific advice
If you’re home testing, a link to your kitty’s spreadsheet

I know how it is in the beginning...it's overwhelming! So many details...so much information! And then to try to juggle everything that you're already doing (I saw your comment about kids and DH, etc.) now add diabetic cat and all that entails to the existing load! I feel your pain!!!

So...take a deep breath...try to get things set up and lets just keep rolling here for the moment...

Once you get your signature down and your SS link there, we can proceed...

Maybe it's too late to move to the Main Health forum - either way, there's a process for what happens when you get a low number and then there's the business of selecting a dosing method - very important to read thru the methods; TR or SLGS - as that will help you decide at what number do you shoot insulin.

I think I read up there you think there are ketones in his pee? It's hard to evaluate those strips after any time has passed...but if that's the case it's even more important to fast track you toward giving insulin - the important question is HOW MUCH to give. You want to give some, but not over do it because you don't want to deal with a hypo situation right off the bat.

Have you been reading any of the other Stickies (the yellow tabbed threads at the top of this forum)...they talk about being prepared for the event of kitty going too low (getting medium and high carb foods to keep on hand, AND having karo, corn, maple syrup in the house or even ice cream for that matter, anything that's full of sugar in the even of a drop)...

Typically new members don't shoot below 200...we ask you to post and ask for help/advice. So these are the steps when you encounter a number that's 'too low' - you STALL/Don't Feed/Test again in 20 minutes. If the BG numbers are going up, it's usually safe to shoot, if going down, then you will want to repeat - Stall / don't feed/ test again in 20 minutes...which direction are the numbers going with no food? That's when you make your call...and either shoot or skip....

So that's why I'm asking you not to give any insulin this morning - it's hard for me to advise you without getting a better picture of what's going on.

You'll also want to keep in mind that Lantus is given 12 hours apart - am dose and pm dose - nice if you can add a column with the time of shot to your SS - nice but not necessary. Also great if you can get mid-cycle tests - that tells us how low the current dose is taking Bombay.

So, that's a ton of information...and this stuff takes time to sort out.

I hope this has been helpful to you this morning!..

Yes this has been super helpful!!! Thank you! I have the signature set up now. :) I'm reading into the page now.

It's fine to post here since you're feeling low carbohydrate food and have your spreadsheet set up.

If you normally give Bombay a shot at 7:30, I'm assuming this is your pre-shot time or is your pre-shot at 4:00? With Lantus, you test, feed, and shoot all within a few minutes. (I would give Gabby her shot when she was eating.) It isn't clear from your initial post if the 151 was at 4:00 or at your usual shot time. Could you clarify?

If the 151 was several hours prior to shot time, it should be entered in the appropriate time for your PM cycle from yesterday. You would then get another test at your usual pre-shot time.

Thank you. Typically his shot is at 0730, but lately my cats have been asking for food earlier. ....
