PMPS was at 96...tested 45 min later he's only at 100. I don't know if I should give his 2.25u dose or skip or give a smaller dose.

Yesterday, he had a hypo event and I think he's likely bouncing from the 44 we had. He is not happy. We switched to all wet food on 9/23 and it moved him from the 500's to the 100's. We decreased the dose last night .25 to 2.25u but I'm concerned with how he's feeling. He's clearly off, growling at me (which never happens), staring off. Could this be due to his hypo, bounce, too much insulin, or what? I hate seeing him like this. I know we did a lot of tests yesterday but he never growls at me.

I just went back and read abut Diego's AM cycle yesterday. Was Diego experiencing any symptoms of hypoglycemia? The reason I ask is that if a kitty isn't experiencing symptoms, it's not a "hypo". Your cat dropped into low numbers which, thankfully, you caught before it became a true symptomatic hypoglycemic event.

If you're following TR, Diego is considered a long-term diabetic. As such, dose reductions are given if numbers drop below 40, if he is in normal numbers for a week, or if he drops in the 40 - 50 range on 3 separate cycles.

You mentioned that you had light corn syrup on hand. The ingredients are the same as in regular corn syrup. The "Light" refers to the color -- or at least is does with Karo. Honey is a fine substitute as is maple syrup or even sugar dissolved in water. Frankly, you could use vanilla ice cream although many cats are lactose intolerant.

Yes, he was aggressive yesterday as well which I know is a symptom in the moderate list. He really is never aggressive with me. I literally have given this cat meds daily for 2.5 years and no issues until yesterday. Based on yesterday since we changed food, @tiffmaxee and @Bandit's Mom thought it was good to drop to 2.25u. The light corn syrup is clear so I bet you are right.

The food change is a good point! Some of his more aggressive behavior may have been due to hunger which can result from the lower numbers. I'm assuming you're giving treats when you're testing. Maybe Diego was being impatient about getting treats/food since you were testing first.

Sorry I didn't see your message earlier. I had suggested not taking an increase to 2.75 after he fell below 50 yesterday. :)

I don't want to skip a shot, but since he's so low and it's PM should we do a lower dose? 45 min after the 96 he's at 100

If you are going to be home tonight and have plenty of supplies (strips, corn syrup etc) I'd shoot the 2.25

The only way you're going to know if he needs a reduction in dose is to let him earn a reduction

I know it's scary, but you will need to learn to shoot those lower numbers at some time. If you can test as much as may be necessary tonight, it's a good time to go ahead and do it.

I can't stay up all night tonight, I'm scheduled for Jury Duty tomorrow. I agree I need to get comfortable shooting the low numbers but prefer it to be during the day when I'm home versus the first time to be a pm cycle.

Well the problem is this.....even if you give a smaller dose tonight, there's no guarantee that he won't drop too low tonight.

Unfortunately, most cats do go lower at night so waiting for him to do it during the day may be a long wait.

You hold the syringe and have to do what you think is best. One thing....if he does drop too low, you can always abort the cycle by filling him up with high carb food and setting an alarm to test again later to make sure he stayed up.

Hmmm....I wonder if "judge, my diabetic cat kept me up all night testing his BG" would be a valid excuse for getting excused from jury duty? (Just kidding....I understand your concern)

HA, I bet that would be the first they've heard that.

I know this is likely not a good choice but I'll skip tonight, I know his depot will have to refill by doing so but I just feel better. Maybe I have nothing to worry about but after yesterday and seeing these lower numbers my nerves are shot. I literally broke down today. I'm exhausted, I'm sad that he's been so mad at me, and to see this and know we'd likely have several tests overnight, I just can't do it. Thanks for jumping on here Chris, I really do appreciate it. I'll grab a +2 tonight and post tomorrow's numbers first thing.
