Hello-

Maxi stayed at the emergency clinic until 7 am on Lasix IV and in an oxygen chamber. They recommended that he go right to the specialists' clinic, so I took him there in an oxygen chamber. That's where Maxi is now.
Both the emergency vet and the specialist say Maxi is doing relatively well and they think they can get him over this. They say it's likely to happen again, though. I want Maxi to come home, spend some time not suffering, and go to sleep unaware and without pain. If you have ideas on how I can arrange this, please let me know.

Thank you

My thoughts are with you...I am not sure if they have Lap of Love near you, but it's a nationwide network of veterinarians that only do house call hospice and euthanasia services and that would be most comforting to you and Maxi rather than having to take him in to ER again for that.

If they don't have Lap of Love in your area, you might see if your regular vet would do a house call or if there are housecall vets in your area.

Glad Maxi is holding his own. Will they put him on meds at home?

Google Laps of Love and see if they have someone in your area. Ask the front desk at ER if they know of anyone.

I just heard of this, Aquamation for pets. Google that and see if it's in your state.

Hang in there, it's a tough situation, you will make the right decision for both of you.

I just spoke with the specialist vet. Maxi's heart is very damaged, very thickened.

The choice is between:
treating the heart issue being conservative/careful with the Lasix to be careful with the kidneys to prolong his life, which requires overnighting at the clinic, and which gives no guarantee of success / coming home
and
treating the fluid build-up aggressively with Lasix this afternoon, which is damaging to the kidneys, in order to get him in a condition to bring him home tonight.

After much discussion with the specialist and with Maxi's regular vet, I have decided to treat the fluid build-up aggressively this afternoon in order to get him in a condition to be able to get him out of the clinic and bring him to his home tonight, spend the night comfortably (I hope and beg for Maxi to spend tonight at home comfortably), and Maxi's vet will come over tomorrow to euthanize. Maybe he will do well enough to live at home for more than tomorrow, but his time will be short.

I love Maxi more than words can say. I am utterly destroyed. I want him to live with me and his brother and his nephew forever. But I can not allow him to suffer if I can help it at all. I want him to forget about the clinic and spend his last moments in his loving home rather than risk more suffering and dying at a horrible clinic away from those who adore him.

Please pray for Maxi to get well enough to come home, to be well for a night or 2 (or more) in our warm embrace, and to be let go unaware and free of pain and fear.

Thank you

I'm so sorry you and your baby are going through this. Hoping he can come home so he can be comfortable during his final time on this earth. :(

Keeping you in my thoughts. I think you are doing what I would do, giving him the strength to come home and be surrounded by your love and gentle gift your cuddles will give him. I am glad that your vet can come to your home and help Maxi where he will be comforted by being where he is content and happy, too...

You are doing the right thing. I suggest you get a paw print and maybe a couple of photos before he goes to sleep. Later, you can set up a shrine for him. Best wishes.

You are doing what I did Karen. :bighug: After getting fluid removed, I had three more weeks and it wasn't because of the heart that I let her go. Spend what time you have loving him and making good memories. I think you are doing the right thing, and I hope it brings you peace with your decision.

Karen, I'm so very saddened to read this....know that we're thinking of you and Maxi today. I hope you were able to bring him home, or will soon.

Sending supportive hugs and prayers your way....:bighug::bighug:

I am sorry to read about Maxi. Many, many thoughts and prayers for you & Maxi for a return home today :bighug::bighug::bighug: .
