Kim and Jasmine

Member Since 2020
Hello. My name is Kim and my baby Jasmine was diagnosed with FD on June 11, 2020. Jasmine is 7 years old and is my best friend. I have 3 other cats 2 of which are her litter mates. Jasmine had been eating alot yet losing weight. She was down to 8lbs from 12. I brought her to vet thinking hyperthyroidism. Her BG was 366 and fructosamine 576. Vet ordered 2u Lantus 2x day. She started insulin on june 13 but I only gave 1u because I did some research first and got nervous. I also changed everyone's diet to strictly wet food. FF and tiki cat. Vet only saw her once more since then for 6hr check and doesnt want to see her for another month! I actually started giving her 1.5 u about a week ago. Her numbers are still high especially in the morning. She has only been below 200 three times. Btw, vet said not to monitor but I have been. I am using contour next one. Since starting insulin she is not the same spunky, loving baby. Shes having some better days tho and I know it will take time. I just want my baby back and can't believe this happened to her. She is smallest of the bunch. Her brothers are 20lbs each! She also has a history of surgeries when she was 11 months old. She apparently was eating all my daughters hair ties and rubber bands that extended from her small intestine to her esophagus. She was cut in 3 placed to remove them. Her esophagus, stomach and small intestine. Needless to say it was a trying time and she was on many meds post surgery. She is a trooper and a fighter and I love her to pieces. So that's Jasmine in a nutshell! Sorry for the long post

Welcome Kim and Jasmine! :cat: It sounds like you are doing a great job with Jasmine so far. FF and tiki cat are excellent foods for diabetic kitties, lantus is a very good insulin, and you are home testing!

One thing that will be helpful if youre interested in receiving dosing advice in the future would be to set up a spreadsheet to track Jasmine’s blood glucose numbers. Here are instructions on how to do that if you are interested. They look very daunting but it’s not too hard if you follow the steps.

Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have! :cat:

Thank you! I have been keeping track of her numbers and write them down in a notebook. A spreadsheet would be great I will check it out. I have been wondering if I should have given her the 2 units as vet said since her numbers are all over the place and still high. Right now I am happy to report that she is running around playing with her favorite red mouse! ❤

Hi Kim I’m so Glad to hear your testing at home . This can all be so much to process. The members can Really help you with setting up your spread sheet if you need them too . They helped me . Just mention it in this post .

Excellent to hear that she’s playing, that’s always such a relief :cat: And yes, if you find you need help with the spreadsheet just shout and we can tag some people to help you!

Crazy numbers in newly diagnosed kitties are usually pretty common. There a couple different sticky posts in the Lantus forum that you may find helpful, but here’s one that explains how lantus works

You’re on the right track and you’re already doing all the right things. Your instincts are also spot on, switching to wet food, starting at 1 unit instead of 2 and home testing! Diabetes is not a death sentence and it’s perfectly manageable but it takes some time. As we all say here, it’s a marathon not a sprint.

welcome and can’t wait to see her pic! :cat:
