Has any one tried this when giving phosphorus binders, I found this on Tanya's site

Giving Binders with Dry Food

  • try putting the food in a freezer bag together with the crushed or powder binder and leave them to mingle overnight

Hi Veronica, My Tyler is the diabetic but this is about his brother Perry.
He's had kidney disease for about 7 yrs or so.
It's gotten worse and this is the first time giving aluminum hydroxide powder and fluids, just started them on Monday.

His regular food is K/D dry, that's all he will eat, I've tried and tried with wet food but he will not eat it.
So right now I am syringing baby food and putting the binder in that
He ate a little of his dry last night and today, but not much.
Then I was readying about putting it on the dry and putting it in the freezer over night
Even if he starts to eat the K/D I guess I can put it on the dry and in a small amount of baby food to make sure he gets it
I have to give him 1/8 of a teaspoon in every meal he eats
He will have blood work again in 10 days

What wet food have you tried? My cat, Kitty, also has CKD (CREATITINE 3.4).

I am attaching two documents. One is the food list provided by a facebook CKD private group member. The other is the list of wet food I feed Kitty (the last column "likeness" indicates if Kitty prefers the food over other foods, although she actually eats most of them).

Hope they can help.

Thank you so much Liang, I will look them over. I have tried the K/D wet only. I will look into the weruva . Thanks so much

What is his stage? What's his Creatinine level? And his phosphorus?

Regarding the food not all cats like k/d and unless his CKD is very advanced you could give him a non prescription food, as long as it's low in phosphorus, Regarding wet food you could look at the lists they gave you in previous posts but also in Dr Lisa's list (it's not only good for diabetics it has great information for CKD) as long as it is 150 or less in phosphorus in her list it would be ok hopefully you can convince him to eat wet don't give up it will help him a lot

They do can live a long almost normal life provided they get some special care like giving them the type of food that can help their kidneys, some supplements and vitamins and sometimes as the CKD progresses phosphorus binders and subcutáneos fluids (which is not as bad as it looks and it makes them feel better)

His creatinine was 2.8 six months ago it is now 12.2
Phosphorus was 2.5 six months ago. It is now 12.3
Urea is 158
Red blood cells were 30 six months ago. It is now 32
I will try the weruva , I'll go buy some today
Giving him fluids, funny thing is with numbers like that he is playing, not lethargic at all, still attacks his brother, grooming .

Hey Janet I'll pick some up today, this cat has never eaten wet food ever, but I'll keep trying. even if I have to syringe it , because I am sure the baby food doesn't have any nutrients in it, or what he needs.
 
Most wet food in the kitty_food list is available in petco. You can order online and pickup in a nearby store, it will save you 10% and your time searching them in the store (there are really too many canned foods in stores).

By order online/pickup in store, you can just buy 1 or 2 cans/pouches for each flavor to see which ones he likes.

If you order online and have them shipped to you, you have to purchase a whole case. Then you may waste money if he doesnt like it.

It is not common for numbers to spike so much in so little time has he had an UTI or other issues ? Has an ultrasound been made?

With those numbers odds are he's having some nauseas is he getting something for that? some appetite enhancer ?

No UTI, He has been on cerenia for over a year now, he doesn't seem nauseous to me, goes after my yogurt hasno problem eating that. I know those numbers are crazy high. No other issues. I cannot afford an ultrasound, credit cards ate too high, I don't much from social security, husband died 11 years ago. I have a very I'll daughter 34 whom has a chronic pain disease for 15 years now no cure , not many treatments that have helped . She only leaves the house for doctor visits. She does live with me.
Money is very tight, he also tak s phenobarbital and keppra compounds to control seizures, knock on wood hasn't had one in 13 months. His supplies cost me a lot of money as it is and then Tyler who is diabetic and the cost of his supplies I just can't afford an ultrasound unfortunately.
I'll see where he stands after 10 days of fluids and the binder

Bought the weruva food put it in front of Perry and look me I figured he walked away so I gave it to him by syringe with the binder.
I know it's not because he is nauseous , like I said never had wet food in his life.
He just doesn't like it. I will keep trying but for now will have to syringe it.I boughtv5 different flavors
He is one stubborn kitty

Have you tried tuna water, either the water from a tuna in water can ( you may even give him taste of tuna with it) or some tuna water you can prepare , I usually suggest this as the last resource because cats tend to get hooked on tuna and is hard to get them out of it, but it works like a charm and you can dissolve almost anything in the tuna water and they will eat it gladly

You could also try Tanya's page suggestion those are usually very good ones and don't give up one of my cyvies that like your boy had never had wet food refuse to eat wet food for over 3 months and one day suddenly she just decided to give it a try and loved it, I used to give her her dry food and pick up everything and just left a bit of wet food on a plate just lying around for her to eat when she wanted

Hi Veronica I will have to try the tuna water, I haven't tried that. I won't give up. I truly appreciate all your suggestions and taking an interest in Perry.
This cat will be the death of me lol. His brother Tyler the one with the diabetes used to eat dry food and then after being diagnosed I bought the fancy feast and started eating it immediately. That's why he's a fatso lol 19 lbs.
Trying to get him to lose more weight. He was 23 lbs in the beginning. Then down to 18 when he was diagnosed. He is one lazy cat. Thank you again Veronica . Tell Babu you're welcome :bighug::cat:

Dr. Lisa Pierson's food chart actually uses the %percentage of calories. So it is comparable to the "calories and metabolizable energy (ME) profile" chart on the WERUVA website.

I have no idea what this means ,I don't even know if the weruva is safe for cdk cats, I know this isn't a group for cdk cats but I was just wondering what people here feed their cats with kidney disease. From what I see on some of the weruva flavors pates the phosphorus says 0.71 %

Please read the document of "Combined_Food_Lists_Feeding_Guide.pdf". It explains what diet cats with CKD need.

Cats with CKD should eat diet with low phosphorus, the lower the better.

Hill's K/D canned foods have the lowest phosphorus as I know, <0.5% as dry matter basis, or <110mg/100kcals. However, they provide very low protein too, <25%; and high carbs, >25%. AND they are expensive too.

So owners of CKD cats look for commercial canned foods as alternatives. For us, phosphorus less than 0.7% (dry mater basis) is acceptable.

CKD cats in stage 3 or later (CREATININE >2.9) need diet of moderate protein, 27-35% of calories coming from protein. So when you look the nutrition chart, look at the "calories and metabolizable energy (ME) profile" chart, and look for the food with % of protein being between 27% and 35%.
