Ducote's precheck numbers are always 500-600 range. I bumped him up to 4.5 units a couple of days ago. This morning he surprised me when out of the blue his precheck number was 291! I went ahead with the 4.5 units but I am nervous about it. Since he normally drops around 200 points 4-6 hours later, is this going to bring him too low? And to add to the nerves this morning, I have to meet my family for my grandmother's birthday lunch today so I will probably be out for a few hours around peak insulin drop. I have been stuck in the house for weeks but it sure is like him to pick today to throw me a surprise curve ball lol o_O I plan to check him right before I leave. Am I right to be overly nervous or am I just overreacting because this is a first for us? Should I have gone with a lower dose or was I supposed to stay the course with 4.5 units?

The only thing I can suggest for this situation is leaving a bowl of high carb food out while youre gone. Cats have been known to seek food when feeling low bg numbers. That said I'm no expert but when you are worried and cant be there ...thats what I would do.
As always hang on for more replies.:bighug:

Omg that's amazing!!! How many hours past shot time will you be able to test before you leave?

Oh, and I'm glad you stuck with 4.5. I'm hoping you will get some healing blue numbers today!!!! Fingers crossed

Ok well that will definitly give you a good indication of how he's doing. If he's below like 130 maybe leave some medium carb food out. But I think this is a great thing!

Thanks! That sounds easy enough! Normally I would be ecstatic to see this preshot number (and a tiny part of me still is) but today is just a scary day for it to be the first low preshot number :nailbiting:

I KNOW! Bad timing, but a +4 is close enough to nadir that you can see where it's going. I am so so happy you are seeing progress. Let's hope those scary black numbers stay away.

If you're still home maybe do his reg low carb food and a spoonful of the shreds if you're worried. If you already left don't worry about it, but he may be high next shot. Ha

I am back and he is fine :bighug:. He jumped from 117 to 201 but that is still a good number for him at this point and I would rather see 201 than a very low kitty when I got home. Thanks for the help! Next time I'll leave regular food with a little high carb mixed in but for the time being it all worked out alright :cat:
