I have been experiencing really low numbers over the past few days. Should I adjust my dosage? GrayGray is tightly regulated. I weigh all her food out on a food scale and her snacks are distributed with a food timer at +3.5 & +7.5 every cycle (2.5oz per meal & 1oz per snack = 4.5 oz per cycle). I currently shoot a 0.5 fat. I just experienced the lowest number yet of 35 @ +4 this evening. I tested 5 minutes later and she rose to 37, then retested 40 @ +4.25 so I know she’s safe with rising numbers. BUT my concern is that she has constantly been testing under 50 the past several evening. Should I reduce her dose to 0.5 instead of the 0.5 fat? What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance, Becky and GrayGray.

You'll want to test again about 20 min after giving her food. If you think she will get filled up, just give her the gravy of the food. You'll want to keep doing this until she's above 50. feed - test in 20 - feed - test in 20 min until over 50

This is from the sticky I sent you:

"If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)
  • Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
  • Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
  • Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
  • Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
  • Test in an hour and follow the same steps.
DO NOT become complacent. If numbers have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wear off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep or leave the house. You are putting your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out.

In the case of an accidental overdose or should there be symptoms of hypoglycemia, even if you have caught this in the early stages, you may need to monitor for literally 16 or more hours. Lantus, Basaglar, and Levemir are long acting types of insulin. This means if your cat is over dose, you will need to stay alert for hours in order to closely monitor and to keep your cat safe.

Please post your numbers. Those people who are helping you will not abandon you. In fact, they are staying up with you. The experienced people will even work in shifts to make sure your cat is safe and you have the support you need. Remember to refresh your browser to see new posts and keep posting so we know all is well."

if not feed her some HC (high carb) food

@Wendy&Neko you on here? I have to head to bed right away.
My options are temptations treats; WD kibble, or

Yes, she went from 35 @ +5 to 34 @ +5.25 ( 15 minutes later) I just gave her a tsp off Smooth n Savery HC treat. Waiting until +5.5 now

What's the carb count on the Soft and Savory Treat food?
I am not sure. I don’t have the box. But I know that a long time ago (Christmas) I received them as a gift for GrayGray and after I fed her one her sugar spiked off the charts super high, so I gave them away but held onto a couple pouches for hypo emergency.

So the Soft and Savory treats are hard crunchies then?

Do you have any gravy lovers fancy feast?
Retested 38 @ +5.75; going up slow. Repeated 1 tsp of treat. No the hard food was the temptation treats given at +4; But then U recommended gravy so I switched to the soft and savory treat which is a wet creamy mayonnaise consistency treat.

Here is a catfood data base. I would recommend that you get some gravy lovers fancy feast to keep on hand for times like this.

The Smooth an Savory Treat has modified tapioca starch which is some form of carbohydrate, but I don't know what the modified means or does to the carb count - if anything.

Ok. That's great that she's above 50. Here it is from a previous post... just to keep it to the forefront:

  • Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.

Yup... you may need the coffee on. lol

I'll also tag @Bron and Sheba (GA) who is usually on this time of night. Hopefully they will be able to stop in and check on things for you. Gnite.

Have you given some honey or Karo to bring the number up over 50?We don’t want the lingering in the 30s and 40s.
Do know what the carb % is for the food you are feeding?

you have earned a reduction in dose down to 0.25 units.

Please keep testing. She is not out of the woods yet.

That is very blurry and hard to read.
Do you have any ice c ream or flavoured yogurt?
Or glucose powder you could mix with water.
It you could cook a bit of rice and add it to the food.

I wouldn’t feed peanut butter. I would try and find something else

I gave her the rest of the lickable treat pouch and I did find a practically empty bottle of honey with some crystallized pieces around the lid I gave her at +6.5. I do not have carbs (no ice cream, no yogurt, no rice) in the house. I do have Agave..... I didn’t think about that until right now! Would that work?

Good. That is probably the honey you gave at +6.5:)
Ok, don’t feed now but test again in 30 minutes to see where she is up to.

The first thing you need to do tomorrow is go out and buy a bottle of honey which is exclusively for Gray-Gray. And also some high carb food which you need to label with the number of carbs on the lids so you know exactly what you are giving,

Sounds like a plan!

Her food timer snack will be going off at 1am in 20 minutes with her LC food in it. Should I remove it so she doesn’t eat it or should I let her have it or should I put honey crystals into it?

Above how many carbs is considered high carb?

You need to get a supply of medium carb and high carb food and honey. And put it all in the back of a cupboard where you can easily get it when needed.
Medium carb 11-16% carbs
High carb 17% and over. It’s good to get a selection. So a few around the 14% and some around the 17% and some around 22%.

You will need to stay up with her for at least another hour and a half to see she doesn’t drop down lower.
I would withhold the timed snack for now, because we need to see she can stay up on her own without honey or food.
Keep the snack and she can have it a bit later.

Ok Thank you so much for your help, Have a good night:)! GrayGray and I will hang out for a couple more hours, she is snuggling with me and seems happy.

FYI - as a last resort you could have used the Temptations. They are high carb. Congrats on the reduction.
I actually began with the temptation treats at +4.5 but I guess they weren’t kickin in fast enough so I switched to the smooth and savory lickable snack treat. Planning out a supply of MC & HC foods to buy while I wait for my next test in a few minutes.

:bighug::bighug:
Gray-Gray has actually dropped below 50 5 times on the 0.5f dose.
Being a long term diabetic, make sure you take the reductions after 3 drops below 50.

I see she is up to 97 now.
Thank you for your help! I am going to feed her +7.5 snack that I with-held at +8.5 after I test and then I will start her reduction of 0.25u in the AM cycle. Thank you :bighug: I’m going to try to go to bed now, even tho I’ve drank a pot of coffee :coffee::nailbiting: lol!
