My cat Wiccet was diagnosed with a severe UTI. I gave him his meds and he seemed to be bouncing back with little difficulties. Until the meds were finished and then about a week later he went downhill rapidly. His back legs got weak and awkwardly beneath him. Then he started getting spasms in his front legs and started peeing all over again, He was no longer able to get to the kitty litter in time.

Now I am waiting for bloodwork to be done for Tuesday morning but my girlfriend keeps telling(like it helps at all) that once that starts happening he is on his way out and won't help even with the insulin. so bloodwork would just be a waste of money. I'm now worried he won't make it until Tuesday and I am supposed to start a new job next week but I can't be here for him and there to make money. I rearranged my living room and close of my small hallway that joins the living room to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. so doesn't move too much. I am worried he will injure himself further. I have garbage bags taped down on the floor and partway up the wall for messes. I can't put water or kitty litter in there because he keeps falling into them and other than injury if he falls into the water and is too weak I am afraid he will drown.

I bring him water hourly and have to hold him up so he can drink. He lays down to eat, I know it isn't good for him to do so but he does eat, and ravenously. I also take him to the litter after eating and drink whether he needs to or not, just to help him. Did anybody else get such a severe crash all of a sudden, start insulin, and their cat still survive!?

Welcome to FDMB We are glad you found us! Boy you and kitty have a tough road ahead. I hate to say this but I do think if theres no one to watch your poor kitty ...He needs to be hospitalized. Now I am NO way ANY kind of expert. (Thats just what I would do)
Please hold on for more replies. I'm sure others will weigh in on this. Lets see what they have to say ok?

I'm sending prayers and positive thoughts for you and your little one.

Again WELCOME:bighug: I'm just sorry you and kitty are going through this.

I agree, this cat should be seen by a vet as soon as you can. I can think of several reasons for his behaviour. It could be he wasn't on antibiotic long enough and the infection came back. But without being checked out, all we can do is guess. Getting an expert to look at him is important to his longer term survival. First and foremost, I am glad he's eating, that's a good sign! And yes, we've had many kitties here with very rough beginnings that have gone on to live for years, some needing insulin all that time, some going into remission.

Puppy pee pads are also great to help contain messes, and easier to clean up.

welcome first and foremost!

what is the vet telling you about all of this? Can you get him in sooner for the blood work? It sounds like an emergency to me...

I went though the pee accidents with Minnie because of her neuropathy and I wonder if that’s what he has as well. It does severely affects the back legs. I had pee pads everywhere. Plastic didn’t do the job as well for me and I’d get leaks but the pee pads aboard the urine and it worked like a charm! When was he diagnosed with diabetes? And you said he’s not on insulin right now, right?

thank you and I am seeking help for a new physical exam with bloodwork but the original clinic I went to refused to do any work without cash and so to did the new clinic. The old clinic would not tell me prices on anything and they used the prices when they did quote. I didn't want to give him insulin without a proper test for diabetes and they called animal welfare on me which forced my hand in seeking help from a new clinic and I had to ask my 70-year-old mother for financial help...something I did not want to have to but the new clinic refused to do any work as well uneless I had cash in had no matter his issues!!

I had to go to a new clinic for an actual physical exam(the first clinic refused a physical exam but took $45 from me for questions asked over the phone)then they called animal welfare on me when I refused to just give him insulin without a test. This all came about because I couldn't pay for blood tests when I got the UTI meds, and they fought with me about giving me the UTI meds without getting the bloodwork done first, but they wouldn't do the work with money in hand. I couldn't get into seeing the new clinic until Tuesday because they wanted cash before any testing as well, and they know the severity of the situation as well!! I will look into the pee pads for sure thank you!!

Where do you live , boy what pieces of sh*t both vets are knowing how sick he is
Look into what Wendy suggested the financial help
I'm so sorry this is happening to your kitty
After you take him on Tuesday let us know what happens
They called animal welfare on you, what did they say to you
I just can't believe they would do that to you, I am just livid hearing this
I can bet you that they will also tell you not to home test,
It's SO IMPORTANT to home text, it's the only way to make sure he is safe
Let's take one step at a time, there are very reasonable meters and test strips that you will able to afford. Will have to see what insulin they suggest if he is diabetic
Sending prayers

the antibiotics were given for two weeks as per the old Vet. He was looking like he was bouncing back until the end of the second week then he started showing more symptoms before the meds he was on out of sorts here and there and not peeing the box. I moved both boxes out to the living room and he had to walk by them to eat and drink and then get back up on the couch with me and this made a huge difference at first. Then once the meds were finished he started to get the weak back legs and then the spasms on the front and not able to stand.

Since the crash I placed him in the small hallway put pillows in for him to lay down on with bags of them for comfort. The space he is in it is no more than 5'x2' he has very little room to move or hurt himself. I did that last night and for the little bits that I brought him out to drink and eat he was able to stand all on his own but only for short periods because I won't allow him to move about freely as I am afraid he will hurt himself if suddenly fatigued!!

I live in southern Ontario Canada. I took a quick look at the assistance but it appeared to be all American as I am Canadian I don't think that they apply to me. Animal Welfare Services reiterated everything the clinic had verbatim and then the woman chastised me...she said "well being a pet owner you should have money" I looked at the police and said I was working before the global quarantine and asked them if they would take insulin without a proper test being done first and both of them simply looked away out to the road. The woman gave me an order to comply by Wednesday of next week and they were just here yesterday so I had to ask my 70-year-old mother on a pension for help, that is how I am able to go to the new clinic on Tuesday!!

Check out the Farley Foundation - they help folks in Ontario. Also PetCard for Canadians - details and links in the post.

Thanks, I save the web addresses for both of them and will give them a call tomorrow. I will also see about calling the new Clinic back as my mother put $300 in my account because we didn't know how much things would be but these will definitely help to move forward!!

I'm aghast at what you and your poor kitty have been through and have to echo Diane's comments. smh How do they sleep at night?
It sounds like your on the right path now. God BLESS your dear mother for pitching in. I also am sending prayers this gets resolved sooner than later and that you can concentrate on your new job and getting kitty feeling better fast.

yea I am hoping for quick results as well but from everything I've read, it sounds like more of a long road ahead in the immediate future. He is better here and there but then he slips and when he slips he seems to go deeper when he does. Voluntary spasms in his front legs have stopped except for when he sleeps or something brushes against his paws, he jerks his front legs & paws back provoking spasms. He is eating like a mad hatter and looking like he is getting thin though. Tuesday's appoint can't come quickly enough!!

Ravenous eating while losing weight is a red flag for diabetes. I agree that appointment cant get here fast enough. :(
Wiccet still has my prayers:bighug:

Yea, I know, I am aware that it is an indicator of diabetes, and I am not in denial by any means. I just wanted a test to confirm is all. He could be eating as does and lose weight at the same time with a viral infection as well right, but a blood test would give a clearer picture as to what is actually going on with him. I mean when you go to a doctor, and he wants to check you for diabetes, he doesn't get you to pee in a cup so he can check for glucose, he takes blood and runs a test, right?!

LOL right! I didnt mean that you are doing anything wrong, it just popped into my head. ;)

Hey there, I am from Quebec :) I don't know if it's allowed to do that here but i would recommend starting a GoFundMe page to try to get donations for your baby's treatments...If you are familiar with reddit, you could try /r/assistance sub forum. I wasn't very lucky using both of these but if you have more friends than me to share your link it could help till you can start working. I really don't like your Girlfriend and your vets at the moment, grrrr :x
