Hey all, one of my civvies has been on Adequan for about six months. When I first took him to the vet for not eating just shy of a year ago, the vet did everything short of x-rays but said it just seemed like arthritis (he wasn't eating because it was too painful to squat to reach the bowl).

Since that initial visit I've kept my eye on him. He was on pain meds for 3 days but it didn't help, and after about a week seemed to be feeling better, but still not sitting down to eat.

I tried Cosequin for 2-3 months with no visible difference and eventually pushed for Adequan. At this stage he is doing great, zooming up and down trees, wrestling with the other cats, running around, etc. But he still hovers that butt just over the floor. I see no difference in energy when I give him his monthly dose so I'm not sure if a more frequent dose would help, if I should consider pain killers, or just accept that's the way he is now. I just wonder if I should be doing anything more for him or if he's "good".

He's pushing 13 and is still very active!

im not sure how it compares to gabapentin. Have you considered it? Minnie is on 50mg twice a day for her neuropathy and what they think could be arthritis that developed from it

I think I've seen that mentioned around here but wasn't sure what it was. Is it a pain med or supplement? Oh that reminds me, I had him on Nordics Natural Fish Oil too along with the Cosequin but didn't notice any change.

Gapapentin is a pain med. Which one was the civvie on for 3 days? The fact that he's zooming around and climbing trees means it can't be bothering him that much!

Neko had quite severe arthritis due to her acromegaly. She was on buprenorphine long term for pain. She also got acupuncture about once a month, and I did daily accupressure for pain. To help the joints she got Cartrophen (Canadian equivalent to Adequan). Tried Cosequen, mehh - didn't do much. MSM did a bit more. I also tried Duralactin (an anti inflammatory) and hyaluronic acid (Hyaflex brand). It took a bit of experimenting, and discussions with the vet, to find what worked for her.

I'm reading that gabapentin can often make them sleepy/stoned-like ... not sure if I'd want to try that considering he spends a lot of his time outside. We're in a kitty-safe area but you never know.

He was on Onisor. Vet did say he could potentially be on it the rest of his life if I wanted but regulations only allowed every 3 days' use. I just never explored it because I wanted to initially avoid him needing constant pain meds if I could help it.

That's kinda what had me wondering, he certainly doesn't act like he needs pain meds for everyday life, but every time I see him hovering his butt at the dinner table I'm just like mmm

The manufacturer of Onsior does not recommend any more than three days. When last I looked they said that's because there have never been long term studies done on older cats.

I tried gabapentin for a while with Neko. It just made her sleepy. Maybe it's ECID, I hear some cats get over the sleepiness.

Never had the sleep issue with Minnie but I started at 20mg and increased from there

Yikes lol. I spoke with someone here outside the US and they were saying they were allowed to use it every day so they thought it was a country regulations thing. Good to know.

My civi Moxie has had joint problems since 8 months ol or so. She is twelve now. I started on cosequin which maybe helped a little, Then I added gabapentin (50mg BID) when I noticed that he would lay down on the side to eat. The addition helped. Then later I added Adequan (0.22) ml monthly after loading doses. She is doing great now.
