No shot this morning, skipping morning dose for his surgery. I'm nervous, I hope everything goes well for him. He's hungry and was searching for scraps on the floor. Not pleased on skipping his breakfast.
Any last minute tips for me this morning?
Hope everyone is doing okay today.

Just spoke to a technician and said I wanted to completely skip the dose since he dropped into the 40s last night and let them know he was at 73 this morning. They said to bring the insulin in and they'd check it themselves on their meter. Well, of course he'll probably show higher, he'll be stressed out. A little annoyed.

Wishing you more luck and calming vines for today, Brittany. Please let us know how things are going, we'll be thinking of you and Thomas J. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
Just make sure they respect your wishes.

Alright, when I actually got there I felt more at ease. They still ask that we leave his insulin and syringes just in case but said they won't give him any.
They're good staff, I shouldn't have complained. The one main vet tech we almost always see, we'll call her Y, always remembers him and what he's came in for in the past. She puts me at ease that he's in good hands, very professional.
I believe his surgery will go smoothly and she said he should be done by 12 p.m. and we can pick him up any time after 1 p.m. most likely. Hope he will eat for them, he was very hungry this morning. I did feed him a second meal at 11 p.m. but he was already hungry by morning.

I'm happy you feel better Brittany, glad you saw the vet tech that remembered you and Thomas J
I'm sure when he gets home he will eat up a storm and probably will eat for them
Let us know when you are home after you get settled

He's being a handful. He's wearing a cone/Elizabethan collar. They tested him at some point and he was 400 something so they gave a half dose, 0.5 unit. Technically didn't have my permission but oh well, it's done. I also got lectured about how human meters test differently than an animal meter. I told her I knew and that his number was likely due to stress. I'm pretty sure she said they tested after surgery, after having him on a glucose drip of course which would obviously contribute to that high number. They said he ate a little bit but had difficulty with the cone.
He was slamming his head against the cone and carrier smearing blood all over it. I think it's mainly because it's in his line of sight and it bothers him, plus his sore, itchy ear of course. He isn't wobbly but kept running into things because he forgets the cone.
What's the first thing he wanted to do when he gets in the house? Jump on everything! I kept grabbing him but he would jump out of my arms every time and bounce into something then fall.
Had to close off the backroom/laundry room because he was trying to jump on the tiny window sills then the cone would smack against the window and he'd fall. It's also where the litterbox is so I had to move the litterbox into the kitchen.
After getting headbutted so many times I made the decision of making a designated spot for him in the living room. I moved the couch up against the wall and windows so he wouldn't fall off and he immediately jumped up to look out the window.
Unfortunately he was in the litterbox and didn't raise himself up far enough and got pee all over his bottom then all over the couch. I did clean him up a bit. He's just laying and staring out, very calm now.
He ate a little bit, they said to make the bowl a little higher than cone so he could put his head over it but that had the opposite effect. Putting it on the floor works better and he can just fit his cone over and eat more comfortably.
I think I'll have to put him in his carrier tonight and in my room so that I can sleep but I know he's going to make a fuss all night in it. Better than him jumping on everything and hurting himself though.
They said to give his normal dose at the normal time but they don't even know when that time is. So, my question is, should I skip his evening dose because they didn't tell me what time they gave the half dose.

Not knowing the timing of that half-dose, you'll probably have to skip. Have you gotten any tests in since he's been home (my goodness, that's going to be fun, dealing with the collar!)

About to test. Haven't been able to because he's been jumping and running around the house and I have to chase and catch him before he hurts himself.

Oh baby Thomas J - it's all going to be ok, precious. Tina had to wear that dreaded collar a few years ago, for three weeks. She did calm down and get used to the nasty thing after a few days. I began bringing her to bed and sleeping right next to her - it worked well to comfort both of us, and I'll always look back on those sweet healing days:)
Sorry about the insulin mess up. You will get him back on track;) His ear will be cute when healed!

AW!!!! It is awful when they have a cone on:arghh: Amethyst had one on after her eye surgery 3 years ago I stayed up all night with her for 7 days because I was afraid she would hurt herself during the night. I took it off her when it was time for her to eat Can you that for him and then put it back on?? Sending love and prayers:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Probably not, they said he started tearing up his ear scratching it after surgery and I'm fairly positive he'll refuse to put it back on if I do take it off. He's a stubborn one.

Awwwww :( Poor baby. I hope he can stop with all the jumping around! I had to get a baby playpen kind of thing for Luci when she first broke her foot...she hated being in there though...but we just couldn't have her jumping around on that fresh cast! At least that's what the vet said...

I sure hope you and Thomas get some rest tonight. That cone doesn't look very comfy at all. I hope he'll get used to it soon.

You've both been through a lot today. Sending hugs and prayers to you both!

head and neck post op. This was a review from someone
By Knitty kitty on Nov 21, 2019 This soft e-collar was a godsend after kitty’s recent VBO ear surgery. After two previous ear polyp removal procedures (polyp pulled from above) she threw the traditional e-collars in no time, even while semi sedated.

When I brought her in for the VBO surgery, I included three kinds of alternative soft collars just in case. She came home wearing the toast. She never tried to throw it off and it did protect her ears as well as the neck area which had a drain tube and stitches.
Because of the drain, the toast got soiled (which was better than the fluid draining onto her chest). I got two extra toasts do that we’d always have a clean one for once or twice daily changes.

It washes well. I’ve been doing hand wash or machine gentle warm water and gentle low temp in the dryer.
Another plus is that she was better able to maneuver about at home which I think also helped her to feel better during recovery. And she often adjusted it gently on her own so that the rectangle aspect would be better positioned for her to eat or for sleeping.

Re size: I got the medium size. The circumference if my cat’s neck is about 10” with fur, lol. The medium size has worked for her.

It definitely has been working well for neck and head post op. And my cat has a history of being “difficult to treat” after surgeries. Head and neck care is what the mfr suggests. For my cat, it’s worked out very well. Thank you.

We used to put them on backwards too at my practice....just so they can't get their feet up there, but can see. Sometimes it works to give them a break
I could try, not tonight though. Don't want to risk tearing his stitching out the first day. Thank you for the tip.

He still dropped quite low. I'm guessing on the times, it could've been anywhere between 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. when he was given insulin so I have no idea where he's at right now. It really worries me because I have no real idea where he's at in his cycle.
I gave some HC which he ate most of the gravy but was difficult to grab the chunks in his cone so I gave some LC too which he was able to eat much easier.

How are you able to test him with that darn cone on
Feeding him maybe you can hold a small saucer up to his mouth so it's easier for him to eat, just a thought
Brittany just curious, why doesn't your spreadsheet have the cells on it , the square
boxes, like most of ours have, it will make it easier to figure out the +1,+2,+3, +4 etc @LilTurkey

I do, not sure what you're meaning. Maybe mine aren't showing up for you?
