Hello all and thank you for taking the time to read/help and I apologize in advance for the lengthy post.
My MooMoo is a 9-year-old, 7 lbs lovable kitty who was recently diagnosed with Feline Diabetes. So far it's been a very stressful situation. To give a little back story, MooMoo (also known as Moose) is a very loving and sweet kitty but she is also a very, keep to herself, likes to be under tables and chairs kind of kitty. We recently moved back in October so knowing Moose's personality and habits when she started hiding under the couch at the new house we didn't think of it as much of a concern. It wasn't until we noticed she was walking on her hocks that raised our concern. Our first thought was she had hurt her hips or back crawling under the couch or jumping off the new bar, we never noticed an increase in her urination or water intake, she acted completely normal just walked kind of funky. The funky walk lasted about a week before we feared it was a spinal thing and we took her in. They did some tests and checked her blood and her Glucose was 400! I was devasted, I had no idea that a cat could just randomly become diabetic ( she had blood work done just 3 months prior and was fine). They admitted her to the hospital to regulate her levels and asked if we wanted to supply her with food, so we went and bought a bag of our normal (Rachel Rays Nurish) but also bought the Rachel Ray's Peak brand to see which one the Dr. thought was better - they chose the Peak version. So she was in the hospital from Friday night until Monday afternoon, I called each day to check on her levels.
Friday at intake they were 400
Saturday's check was 198
Sunday's check was 148
Monday's check was 150
They said that it was running around 300 before the shots each time. They sent her home Monday and instructed me to feed her 1/3 cup food and then give her 3 units, twice a day. I started the shots the next day, I feed her at 6:30 am and gave her the shot at 7:00 am. I have to persuade her to eat a large amount at once because she's a grazer when it comes to eating. She likes to eat a little, go lay down, clean her paws and then go back, so getting her to eat at least half of the food before her shot is a task in itself. She has never eaten the full 1/3 cup before her shot (they told me as long as she ate at least half to give her the shot), I did leave the food down for her and by lunchtime, she would have eaten the majority of it. We have to take her in every few days to get tested as they have instructed to not home test at this time.
The first time we took her in for her check she was on 3 units and tested at 75, they lowered the amount to 2.5. We went back a few days later and she tested at 71, they lowered the amount to 2 units. We took her back in yesterday and she tested at 45!!! She wasn't lethargic or unresponsive at all before we took her in yesterday she was walking around, wanting lovings, jumping on the chair. I'm at a loss, I don't want to hurt her in this process. They told us to lower the amount down to 1.5 units but to base it off what she eats, which we reiterated again how hard it is to get her to eat (I've even added in wet food to entice her, she still grazes). The last two shots (last night and this morning) I have given her 1 unit instead of the 1.5.
It's crazy but part of me wants to think that maybe she doesn't need insulin and the change of food has regulated her. I know that's practically impossible, I'm just terrified at this point I'm harming her more than I'm helping her. She's getting less willing to take the shots (running away from me) and I feel like we're both becoming overly stressed with this situation.
Again, thank you for taking the time to let me rant. If you have any suggestions, advice or even words of encouragement, Moo Moo and I appreciate it.
