12-21(Yesterday) Good morning. Everyone have a wonderful day of rest. Kitties surf safely:cool::D

Well, figuring out carbs for each of the Dr. Elsey's formulas, we use, is confusing me. LOL!!!!!! I've used the math formula provided by Marje in this thread. My calculations don't make sense:rolleyes::oops: I'd really like to figure out the % of LC so, I can steer properly with the different formulas. It'd be nice to know if I'm using 1% carbs or 7%(for example). I might be able to make sense of Moeys' #s, finally....maybe LOL!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. My calculation for the carb # in the beef formula is .0111. Does that mean there's really less than 1% carbs in beef.....I doubt it. I'm soooo confused:confused::confused::confused: Help help:)

Slippery Elm always works for my kitties. I give them both half a cap mixed in water & into a feeding syringe. 2 X a week.

OP is from 12/18...I have questions re: SEB. I replied to that thread and cut/pasted to todays thread. Hope that's ok:)

Sorry for the long post:(
I'm very interested in a natural way to keep the boys regular.
When I switched them to canned food, I began adding water to the food to make it soupy. Enough water in their diet shouldn't be the issue.
I gave Miralax as needed. I tried giving Miralax as a "supplement" every other day to promote normal BMs(that didn't last long:rolleyes:).
I gave pumpkin for 2 consecutive days..1/2 teaspoon every meal(plus 2 snacks) for a total of 1 tablespoon on day 1. On day 2, I only gave 1 tsp pumpkin. I read kitties can get use to the laxative effect when given daily. Peeps on the board concurred. So, I discontinued the pumpkin.
I bought a bag of Dr. Elsey's clean protein dry. It has 3x the amount of fiber compared to the canned food. It is also low in carbs. The bag sits here unopened. I was discouraged, by the board, about giving Ittle a small amount everyday for the added fiber.
I even grow cat grass and add it to their breakfast...for the added fiber.
I truly believe the problem is fiber. While on dry cat food, the boys always had regular healthy BMs. This dry and scant BM problem didn't begin until they went on canned food only. When Ittle did the walking poo with no success, that terrified me. Fecal impactions are no joke.
Miralax and pumpkin both worked. Both kitties produced healthy BMs the following day. The problem is you can't give Miralax and pumpkin regularly, to keep kitties regular. So, you have to end up waiting until you see a problem and treat. I want to prevent the problem. I'm so frustrated.
So, my questions for you are about the SEB. You give it twice weekly. Do your kitties have issues with constipation? Do they have smallish, firm, dry stools? If so, does the SEB keep them regular(daily normal BMs)? How long have you been using it? Have you noticed it having the opposite effect and causing constipation(I've read it can)? Where do you get your SEB? You give 1/2 cap....is there different strengths? If you don't mind pointing me to some info, I'd appreciate it tremendously! TIA

Can you please post the DMB or as-feds for protein, fat, carbs, fiber, ash, water (DMB won’t have water) and I’ll calculate it for you :)

Thank you Marje. As much as I need 2 of the other formulas as well, there is no data for fiber. Here are the 2 formulas I have complete DMB #s on. I hope DMB is the same as dry weight. Dry weight is how it's listed on Dr. Elsey's website.
Beef- Protein=44.93 Fat=45.53 Carbs=2.74 Fiber= 1.85 Ash=9.45
Salmon- Protein=43.3 Fat=40.04 Carbs=1.13 Fiber=1.46 Ash=5.52
The company emailed me the as fed carb values but, no other values. Maybe you can make sense of them.
Salmon 0.30
Beef 0.69
Turkey 0.717
Chicken 0.56
Whitefish 0.575
Thanks again Marje!

Do your kitties have issues with constipation?
I've been giving it to my cats on & off for over a year. If I see that Ravan's BM looks dry I give him the SEB as I described.
I'm not on a strict schedule with it. Sometimes I give it 2 X a week sometimes his BM looks OK & I skip. I've been using Herbal products for myself & my animals over 50 yrs. I honestly have never had any problems except maybe what I tried I felt didn't work, but that has been rare.

This is the one I get from Amazon I like the caps because it's quick & easy.
Oregon's Wild Harvest Slippery Elm Organic Capsules, 90 Count
by Oregon's Wild Harvest $13.95

I use the syringe that doesn't have the "black" ring at the top. Those stick & you can't use them too long.
Now days it's all about $$$$ They tell you to only use them one time & toss them out. I rinse it thoroughly & soak it in a glass of water with a few drops of Grapefruit seed extract. I cannot afford to throw things out!

It's about 3 ml when I give him the SEB

If you have any questions I'd be happy to help.

Interesting thread. My cats have been on Darwin's raw for at least 3 years and only Disco has problems with passing stool. It is less of a problem when I add more Fancy Feast Classics as I have been recently, and I give him psyllium powder for it but sometimes he still strains to pass stool, to a point where he has had a few vasovagal episodes before the increased Fancy Feast. To the naked eye, the stool looks normal-Tootsie Roll, and not pellet hard (soft cookie right out of the oven softness) but when you break it apart with the litter scoop, it's almost like wet sawdust texture and I have been told that is normal for raw fed cats as they digest it so fully. Sometimes, maybe when he eats a bigger portion of the psyllium, it's almost like string texture too when you break it apart. I have never tried SEB but am considering it and appreciate the resources.

FoodfurLife’s egg yolk powder is also good for constipation.

Beef: 2% (rounded up) calories from carbs;
Salmon: 1% (rounded up) calories from carbs;
Chicken: 2% (rounded up) calories from carbs;
Turkey: 2% calories from carbs;
Whitefish: 2% (rounded down) calories from carbs.

This is assuming “dry weight” is the same as DMB (it appears to be).
