Omg.. this is why sleep is important :banghead:

I went to increase this morning and realized that last time I increased, it was by an entire 1/2 unit. Not a 1/4. I don't know what I was thinking... I guess I was following the markings (I make myself a syringe guide for each dose, so can compare).

I only realized this as I was drawing up his insulin after testing and feeding. I didn't know what to do so held the dose that I thought was 1.25 but is actually 1.5. Of course now I'm thinking I should have increased to 1.75, but it's too late for this cycle.

So disappointed.

It’s okay. Is Mister Figgy feeling fine? Whatever you do, it can be corrected. Anyway Figaro was running so high already. You’re all safe and now you know to double check. I once gave twice as much NPH to Alice at my vet’s office in front of her because I was so tired after DKA. No gravy foods on hand then. Just whatever was around that was probably HC.. I did panic but she managed... :bighug:

When Alice’s sugar is high I like to be sure to give her extra water with her food to help her clear things out of her system more easily, you know? Help those kidneys move things along.......

But find the chance to take a few extra naps as soon as you can. I sleep extra ahead of time sometimes just in case the next night is pajama party time. :coffee: :p

If it's any consolation, with TR, if nadirs are generally over 300, you increase by 0.5u. From the sticky:
Increasing the dose:
  • Hold the dose for 3 - 5 days (6 - 10 consecutive cycles) if nadirs are less than 200 before increasing the dose by 0.25 unit.
    • if your cat is new to numbers under 200, it is recommended to hold the dose for at least 8-10 cycles before increasing.
    • when your cat starts to see nadirs under 100, hold the dose for at least 10 cycles before increasing.
  • Increase by 0.25 unit after 3 days (6 consecutive cycles) if nadirs are greater than 200, but less than 300.
  • Increase by 0.5 unit after 3 days (6 consecutive cycles) if nadirs are greater than 300.
If you're looking only at the last 3 days, the 0.5u increase would apply although you're seeing a bounce. I think what you did was fine. If Figaro follows the "rules," the bounce should be breaking and he may be back in the blues. If you increase at the same time a bounce breaks, it could be a very active cycle.

Thanks, Sienne. The .5 increase was done back on 7/30, I did not increase this morning (but I should have, I think). One of my points of confusion is how to identify nadirs while bouncing (and while still very unregulated). Do I consider the ~121 of 7/31 as a nadir, or as an anomoly? If I take it as an anomoly, it certainly seems his nadirs are above 200 and probably above 300 so I could potentially increase to 2u.

I don't think Figaro knows that there are bouncing rules  it feels like he bounces up but never comes back down. Can an increase actually trigger a break?

I posted the morning and indeed... back to bed after! I don't know why, but I've never been able to nap outside of my regular nighttime sleep. I may need to develop this new skill! :p

Luckily the water mixed into food trick works for him too! Even before diagnosis, Figaro has never had the tell-tale thirst that seems to be very common among diabetic kitties, so I do it anyway to be sure he's hydrated and flushed out as much as possible. Big clumps in the LB

Figaro seems to feel good! He rocketed up the side of his cat tree yesterday which made me super happy. He is certainly accustomed to these high numbers, gotta fix that to make sure he feels good longterm. :)
