PMPS

Hi my name is Edye and I am new to the group. My cat Orson was diagnosed 6/25/19. At first he was on 3u of Lantus twice a day. With guidance from this group he is currently on 2U twice a day. Tonight his PMPS was normal 117 (after testing twice) I fed him his dinner not realizing I should have waited another 30 min and retested.
Question-what now-have a screwed up my hard work and since I am skipping his PM dose what can I expect and what should I do in the future when he has a normal BG test?

Thanks

Hi Edye…..can we get you to go ahead and fill out your signature? If you click on your sign on name you should get the choice of "Signature"

A new box will pop up where you can enter information like:

Cats name/your name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health issues or medications? and a general location.....then you can put the link to your spreadsheet in and hit "save".

If you look beneath my comment, you'll see my signature......that way we don't have to keep asking the same questions over and over again

Next I'll work on your original question!

He's probably going to continue to go up for this cycle since you skipped the dose....and as I told you on Facebook, the next time you get a Pre-shot too low to shoot, it's better to stall, don't feed and post for help. Make sure your title line makes it clear that you need help NOW....something like "STALLING....NEED HELP!!!" usually works....LOL

Test again in 20-30 minutes to see if the BG goes up without the influence of food. If it does, it's usually safe to go ahead and give the scheduled dose.

You don't usually reduce the dose just because of a lower than usual pre-shot.....You just have to be prepared in case he starts to drop too quickly or too low. If you shoot a low PS, you should test at +1 and +2 so if you need to intervene with something higher carb, you can do it early.

Another thing...if you can't stay home to test, it's better to skip than to shoot anything at all (at least until you really understand Orson's patterns inside and out)

Once you're here, we say that if he has a PS that's under 150, you should stall (for now)...eventually (if you do Tight Regulation) you'll learn to shoot lower and lower numbers until you get to the point where you'll shoot anything above 68 (on the AT). If you do Start Low, Go Slow, it's as long as he's above about 90.

What we hope to do is give them enough insulin so they can spend as much time in "healing numbers" as possible (68 to about 150) so the pancreas can hopefully heal and resume doing it's job!

welcome Edye and Orson --- oh that name has memories attached from long ago

new in the group, just switched to Lantus from Vetsulin, listen to the Experienced Ones, they've been remarkably successful over the years, and are happy to share their painfully accumulated knowledge with us newbies :joyful:

you must be at the point where you are coming out of shock at all the new knowledge being thrown your way -- dive in, have fun :)

Hi Edye!

Welcome to you and Orson! There is a lot of information here but don’t feel overwhelmed, there’s a lot of people here who can help you learn along the way.

One of the first things you should do here is to read the stickies at the top of the forum. Firstly the sticky on how to handle a hypo event so that you can be prepared for the possibility of dangerously low Blood Glucose (BG) levels. secondly the sticky about Tight Regulation (TR) and Start Low Go Slow (SLGS) these are the two different dosing methods that we follow for Lantus.

TR is a more aggressive method with more frequent dose changes and more frequent BG testing. SLGS is a more cautious method for people who can’t test as much due to other life commitments, as well as for people who haven’t transitioned their cats to wet food. Have a look at the descriptions of the two methods and see which one works for you, once you decide add it to your signature so that members here can offer you the most appropriate advice.

Great job setting up your signature by the way... it looks great! The last piece that we like to add to it is a link to a spreadsheet for Orson that tracks his BG levels. There is a sticky on how to set one up HERE. No pressure to do it straight away, but it is super helpful for anyone who would like to offer advice, as well as for you to notice Orsons insulin reaction patterns.

Orson is super cute! So handsome!! looking forward to seeing his posts on the board :)

Welcome to the group!

I'm going to throw more housekeeping at you. (Sorry!) Can you set up a spreadsheet? The instructions are here. I'm assuming you're home testing based on your first post. We can be most helpful if we can see how Orson is doing.

There is an overwhelming amount of information in the sticky notes at the top of the Board. I'd encourage you to start to read through and please don't hesitate to ask questions. The people here are very generous with their time and knowledge.

Thank you. He does have a spreadsheet and I think Chris provided a link. Do you see it?

Awesome! I do see it! Great job getting that set up :D

The next step is to add that link into your signature :) You just have to copy what Chris posted, go back into the area where you created your signature and paste it in there at the end of your text, it will show up in blue. You can see Mowgli's spreadsheet link below in my signature

Thanks-I will give it a try and see if I can add it. I am not exactly the most tech savvy person.

Yes I feel like everyday I am playing with a puzzle and all the pieces are 1 color!!!

Sticky Notes??? I don't see anything like that at the top.

Hello and welcome. Look for those posts at the top of the forum with the yellow word Sticky beside the title.

Thank you-I found them. I didn't realize I had to leave the thread and go to the Forum page.
