Info Dr. Pierson - new Food Chart

If you are able to get the information, can you please pass it along to me? Things are so bad in my life now that I have to go without eating to make sure my furbaby has his food, insulin, needles etc. I’m so scared that I will have to rehome because I might just be homeless myself.
So sorry to hear this and I can certainly relate to your delema. If I ever find the information I will certainly post it. In the meantime just use the Special Kitty Turkey and Giblets for every chart I have found shows that as the lowest carbs. Best of luck to you

Hi Dr. Pierson,

I contacted Redbarn recently and asked for the TNA on their pate recipes because I am looking for a low carb and low phosphorus food. Redbarn sent me the attached spreadsheet. Not sure if you can use it in your food chart.

Regards,

Patricia & Coby

Reviewing the food list...

How does anyone make a decision with so many options out there?!?

Currently feeding my kitty (Rho) Science Diet m/d dry but it's crazy expensive, and I'm now wanting to switch him to wet.

He is not picky, and I don't want/need to feed him the cheapest food out there. I was fine spending $25/mo on a bag of quality food before he had diabetes.

What are the top 3-4 brands recommended as a starting point?

Kim, I would recommend that you copy this message, start a new thread in the Main Forum http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/ with a title such as "What brands of food are best? " and paste the message. More members are going to see your question and give your some input. Our cat was already getting Friskies and 9 Lives wet food, in addition to dry. We transitioned to Fancy Feast Classics and Friskies pate, with baked chicken breast and bone broth.

I'm confused on what percentage of carbs to stay under for a diabetic cat. My vet has always had me looking for food based on the "dry matter" carb content, which needs to be under 10%. She says there isn't a strict limit when looking at values "as fed" because that includes water and every company adds a different amount of water. How can I tell by looking at this chart which foods are low enough in carbs that they won't lead to a need for a higher insulin dose?

I was looking at Ziwipeak rabbit & lamb and emailed the company, who said that the carbs are 3% and as dry matter they are 12%. Wouldn't this mean the carbs are too high for a diabetic cat?

Dr. Pierson, thank you so much for this bundle of research, for loving our cats, and for all of your hard work.
I just bought a few cans of Evangers Beef It Up because I read somewhere that it was lower in phosphorus. I value your research, and wonder why Evangers is not on your list?
Thank you again for such valuable information.

When I called Evangers because a freeze dried food I bought, smelled funny I thought, and I wanted a refund, they sounded so nice on the phone and sent me a bunch of coupons, but then they have had a lot of recalls. I never bought their products again. That was a few of years ago.. Maybe things have improved.

Does anyone know if the Tiki Cat numbers are correct, specifically the Bora Bora Luau? The protein and fat percentages look switched when compared to the other flavors, so I was wondering if it was perhaps a typo or an odd outlier! Same as well for the Gourmet Carnivore line?

Hello all,

It has been awhile since I have visted the board but I wanted to let you all know that I have been working many hours over the past 3 months to update the protein/fat/carb/phosphorus food chart. Here is the new link: http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

If the old link is used, it will still go to the old chart. I can't seem to get the re-direct to work but I will keep working on it.

Over the past year I have had several people ask me when I was going to update the chart and my standard reply has been "when hell freezes over or pigs fly"....given what a incredibly time-consuming nightmare the chart is to compile.

But...in Dec of last year I decided to tackle it again and the new chart is actually twice as long as the old one. This PDF is 63 pages long and the old one was about half of that. If anyone prints it, they will kill a lot of trees. Plus, I don't have a printer-friendly (removing the shading so not so much ink is used) version available yet.

Users of the chart will also notice that I put a request for donations at the top of the chart for TLC Cat and Kitten Rescue so that homeless cats and kittens can benefit from the gazzilion hours I put into compiling the thousands of data points contained on the chart.

Regarding updating the sortable chart - that will not be done since someone else did that I and I do not know how to set one up so what is there will just have to be enough. There will also not be a chart for ascending phosphorus values like there was before.

You will also note that I streamlined the chart and removed DMB data. Only ME (calorie-basis) values are shown which is the best way to look at food composition.

And, finally, keep in mind that the numbers on the chart are VERY loose so don't get neurotic about whether a food says 7% carb or 10% carb because they are virtually the same number. Due to the way carbs are figured, a food that states 10% carb content could even be 0% or 2%. Food compositon numbers are just not that accurate.

I hope that the new chart is of help to all of you.

What a great update.
Very well done. :bighug: :)

Good to see Purina Pro Plan Urinary on there.
I have been a bit concerned about the carbs.
Very suprised to see how low the carb content is.

I have been feeding it to Shadow ever since he had a major blockage several years ago. He has never experienced another one since. Probably dont need to even feed it to him. But why fix something that does not appear to be broken?
We only feed him a spoonful at a time.
One less worry now.

Thanks so very much for the amazing amount of work you put into this. M'row just got diagnosed with diabetes two weeks ago; I learned right away that he had to get off the dry food, so that's done. Your wonderful work here will be so helpful in guiding us through all the varieties of canned food out there, so head-butts to you!!

Thank you very much for your hard work!!!! This is going to help me out a lot more and I think I will be changing my healthy cats' diets as well. I also shared it on Creepy Cat Club on fb.

And btw, boo at Petsmart!!! I quit shopping there many years ago when I had hermit crabs (they are animals too!) and learned a lot about what is actually RIGHT for them. When I complained to my local Petsmart multiple times about the terrible conditions of their "crabitat" (no humidity, insufficient and broken+painted shells, etc.) and not a single thing was ever done, I never stepped into their store again.

Looks like there is a new Fancy Feast coming out. It's called Gourmet naturals "grain free" and has many pates. Seems like this may be good for diabetic cats that are FF addicts like mine!

Thank you Dr Lisa! My cat can only eat rabbit because of allergies. Do you know of a good wet food that is low carb rabbit only?

Guess what?
I went to a holistic store for animals to see what can/wet food they carry. I was trying to pull up my list on my cell, I mentioned that my cell so slow & I was trying to look at a list I have.
The owner said “ I have a list, wanna see it”

She printed out and is studying this list!!! I was so shocked but SO HAPPY!
I pointed out the section where Dr Lisa posted about how bad some of Daves food is since they sell the exact ones in her store. She read it and then took it off the shelf .
She is trying to learn everything on this list because her new manager said she had to LOL! Yeah, manager telling the owner what to do :)

Thank you Doctor for the update! Sadly, we had to send Woody on ahead last Wednesday, but it was due to bowel lymphoma, NOT his diabetes. I donated to your link in memory of Woody.
I have given your list to "boutique" pet stores in my area and will now bring copies of your updated list.

I was looking at these and want to try them but need to know the carb content first! They look promising. :)

Hope they are low in phosphorus to! That’s a problem I’m running into, not that many are under 300 phos AND low carb ...oh and pate. Mine only like pate style. It’s killing me, I’m paying $53 every week because all I can get in the store is Pro Plan urinary tract health turkey and Giblets that meets all the requirements. My baby has FLUTD & diabetes ( and 2 bad teeth that I have to somehow get removed)

UPDATE— 3/8/19 Now Skittles has developing Stage 2 kidney failure. Trying to slow it down :(

Thanks so much for this chart! It has been so helpful. We refer to it all the time to make sure Mugen is getting a food that he enjoys, that is low in carbs, and one that I can afford. I switched to the Friskies pates because the fancy feast cans are so tiny and since my other kitty (Toda, Mugens son) shares with Mugen I was going through a case of 30 in a week! Thanks again!

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Dr. Lisa, for putting this wonderful chart together. Newest kitty is showing signs of FD, so want to get him on some low carb food as I go get a new tester and strips today. Thought J&B's chart was a bit too out of date, but didn't know how much had changed. Also helping a friend with her diabetic cat. Good to see you on the board still. You helped us so much with Crash. Thank you again for all the time you spend helping our kitties. :)-Linda (Trouble and Slinky)

ever hear of Whole Hearted Cat canned foods? don't see it on your list

I've only just tried it out, but one that I've found would be the Koha rabbit au jus pate (it is a part of their limited ingredient stuff). I'm going to try to include the spreadsheet I got from them here, I got this from them this past February.

My cat Delgado is sick of WEruva unfortunately and everything else. Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals just came out and we bought the grilled beef with gravy Grain free. A little scared about the gravy part. Anyone know the carb count for this new one? Without this chart I would have been so so lost and all info is appreciated!

Calculated the carbs for the new FF "gourmet naturals" in gravy and they seem to be very low. Calculated the same new lines Pate cans and they are way higher. A little suprised cause with regular FF the pates are so low. With this new line the gravy cans are better. Which is great but hope I am correct!

I got a coupon for a free box of fancy feast cans and since its a "free box" situation rather than just dollars off... I was thinking of taking the opportunity to get the better quality zero carb stuff... but I can't figure out what the ones on the chart are or if they're the ones that are going to be in the store...

The chart doesn't mention gravy ones under the naturals line...

But I was thinking the same thing, usually "gravy" means high in carbs and usually "pate" even in other lines like the medleys, means low carb...

So now I'm confused lol

I think my carb calculation is correct they are gravy but very low. It’s their grain free line and supposed to take the place of the grilled stuff they all love so much. My cat likes it and his blood is good so I think it’s fine. Like the royal canin line for diabetes has gravy but is low. He likes it but does now act like a total crackhead about it so I think it’s fine haha. He flips over the grilled FF.

I gotta get better at calculating all that...

I also think I need a higher protein lower fat food than what we're using right now, at least mixed in, so the natural stuff looked more appealing that way too...

But this stuff is new and it's not the same as the "natural" line on the chart right?

I can't believe how many different types of food fancy feast has, lol I can't keep track, I got a medleys can for an emergency hypo but when i looked it up i had grabbed a "pate" medley that was only 4% carbs! lol

So confusing.
