Hi all,

Flew home today on a redeye from the west coast and gave Bronx his "normal" shot of 7.5u after testing him this morn with a 142 BG. Good thing I was home today and saw him staggering and almost falling down at about +8. Tested twice and he was 22/20. Gave a can of high carb 24% and at least a teaspoon of Karo which he gobbled down. Tested again about 10min later and he was 32, and a few more minutes after that he was 43. Just now 57 about a half hour after the hypo. This was scary. He is still a little shaky on his feet now. Will test frequently.

That's so very scary, Paul, good job getting Bronx back into safe territory. Saw your post earlier, but was at work and couldn't reply. I hope Bronx is doing ok, glad others chimed in about possibly being sensitive to insulin after a hypo. Give Bronx a few belly rubs for me, and don't tell him this, but he scared me half to death! :bighug:

How is Bronx tonight?
 
Hi Paul, Bronx is keeping you on your toes for sure. Scary! I'm so glad that you came home in time to catch that hypo.
I'm also glad that you decided to skip the shot tonight. Time to drain the depot.

Yikes! Don’t know what you are considering for tomorrow’s dose, but I’d take a couple units off at least to start. Plus I would monitor him closely for a while yet. Lev/Lantus hypos have been known to go on for 16 hours. And it he does any crazy stuff like that tonight, you may want to think about a vet and a glucose drip.
 
I’m glad to see his numbers are coming up tonight. What a scare. Any reason why the PS raised the dose? I sure hope he’s ok now and I would definitely drop the dose tomorrow due to the potential insulin sensitivity.
 
OMG! How frightening!! I'm glad you were home and able to catch him and take care of him...poor baby...Hope he can get that depot drained and his dose adjusted...hang in there.

I will never forget when that happened to bella, very first day I brought him home from vets, my very first shot!!!!

I wouldn’t worry about his ALT. That’s a very, very mild elevation. He has tended to run on the high side of normal on his ALT and he’s stable since last Aug. My little girl, Livia, has always run about that level on her ALT. There has been a recent study that indicates ALT might be higher in raw fed kitties, which Liv is.....not sure about Bronx. But I really wouldn’t be worried about that level; even a 3-fold increase in the high normal of ALT is still considered a mild to moderate increase.

Two things that do strike me is (1) his hematocrit is bordering on anemia which is considered below 30%. Something is causing this low hematocrit in him and (2) in past tests, his urine has been really dilute starting last June. Oft times this is a precursor to CKD although his creatinine and BUN as well as other parameters are totally normal now.

His drinking additional water could also be a precursor but drinking a lot of water can be symptomatic of lots of things including hyperthyroidism. And the more he drinks, for whatever reason, the lower his urine specific gravity will be.

I agree with Elise that a vet visit might be a good idea with the loss of appetite. I hope he starts to feel better but there has to be a reason behind these crazy BG swings when you had him looking great. Tons of vines for Bronx.

Finally got up and showed some interest in zero dry and moving a little better. Hanging out by wet food but not touching it. I really loaded him up on karo with that scare and his tummy must've been in knots. It was so scary seeing him wobble and unable to walk. Can't get into litter box either so peeing on floor near the box. Still have no idea why he dropped so much. I did shoot him after being up all night on the flight so maybe I shot way more than 7.5u? I really don't think so, just makes no sense as to what happened yesterday. He did not eat any food overnight that the pet sitter left but his AMPS was a normal blue before I shot him.

I haven't tried SEB. Can't go near his mouth with any syringe. He's willing to break his neck to get away when I try that.

I use an old outdoor welcome pad but he peed in many different places. Also had to hose it off outside from all the wet poo on it. Was all over is legs too. :( I think he just couldn't make it to the LB.

I never want to see him hypo again, it takes a toll on a cat.

Ah..that's a story in and of itself, I was upset after I tried to help someone whose kitty had consistently low BS, I suggested they take the cat to the vet, they finally did but it ended up being too late. I was devastated. I almost deleted my account, still not sure what my presence here on the forum is, if any. But I see my old friends and can't help but post. Trying to work my way back. Thanks for thinking of me even while Bronx is feeling yucky :bighug:, it means a lot to me.

Ah..that's a story in and of itself, I was upset after I tried to help someone whose kitty had consistently low BS, I suggested they take the cat to the vet, they finally did but it ended up being too late. I was devastated. I almost deleted my account, still not sure what my presence here on the forum is, if any. But I see my old friends and can't help but post. Trying to work my way back. Thanks for thinking of me even while Bronx is feeling yucky :bighug:, it means a lot to me.

Ain't that the truth:woot:. You must still be in a bit of shock, I can't imagine. Wish our boys could get nice consistently flat Lantus cycles, but that just doesn't seem to be their gig. How's the little man, can you get some food in his belly? Tuna juice has worked for me in the past when my CRF kitty didn't want to eat, as well as bonito flakes, and some deli meats (no sugar if possible).

Something you don't need to syringe...we need Bronx to feel comfy, and that doesn't sound like he'd be interested in ;)
