Ana & Frosty (GA)

Member Since 2018
It’s been almost a week since I lost Frosty. I still can’t help but come onto this site - it’s a habit I guess - and just look around. Although we had his diabetes relatively under control, I don’t really feel like there is much for me to contribute from that respect, since there are so many experts here who have been doing it longer than I did. I don’t really want to be one to repeat the same thing that’s already said either.

But I wanted to let you guys know that I am around, and if there is anything I can help with, feel free to tag me in the post. That way it will go straight to my email and I will know to come here.

I think the things I can help with the most is moral support for a member who is struggling with whatever it is they may be going through, and of course advice/support to those with a cat with Cushing’s. The former I am sure most of us here can handle, but if there’s a particularly difficult case, I am happy to try to offer some help or comforting words.

As for Cushing’s, if there are any cats with Cushing’s that pop up here, feel free to tag me. I also decided to keep the remaining Vetoryl that we have (I returned the unopened box). It’s good until 2020 and I figured that if a cat on here is started on Vetoryl before then, I can mail it to them, since it is expensive. If anyone’s dog is on Vetoryl for Cushing’s, I would be happy to send them the medication as well. I just don’t want it to go to waste.

I am posting this on this page because this is where I posted the most and I feel that we have the most “friends.”

Also, I mailed most of my remaining supplies to all who expressed interest yesterday, so it should be expected to arrive next week.

Thanks. And hope to talk to you all soon.

A new person appreciates all support.... it’s nice to not feel alone. Just saying welcome, we are here to help is a comfort.

I'm happy you're going to stick around Ana. We become a family here very quickly and we'd all miss you!

Not everyone is comfortable giving dosing advice, but I've told a lot of people this....sometimes the best thing you can do is just tell someone "I understand....I've been where you are and I totally get it"

Just knowing somebody cares and is listening is one of the most important things!

(((Ana)))

I'm now among the handful of "old timers" who has been hanging around. I can think of only 2 or 3 people who have been here longer than I. Gabby's journey began in 2009 and she crossed the bridge in December of 2015. I'm not here as much as when Gabby was alive but I'm here when I can be. This board is an oddly special place that is, at least for me, hard to leave.

As Chris noted, this is family. This is a group where we are all always learning. Where there is support whether it is for our kitties or for us or those close to us. We all volunteer what we can -- whether it's technical information, a few words of caring and concern, or empathizing with how challenging and yet rewarding this process is. And, of course, we all ache with the losses.

You are most welcome to stick around. There are few people who can offer your insights around Cushings. Even more, your devotion and caring is part of what makes this a very special group of crazy cat people.

Well, since you are sticking around... :bighug::bighug:

I have a couple of question on Entyce. How is it given? How often? You said Frosty responded well to it, were there any side effects? How expensive?

I am not sure if my vet would be willing to try it but if Gizmo's appy doesn't pick up I fear we are approaching the end faster than expected. He lost 6oz in the past 2 weeks.

Of course. I’m sorry Gizmo hasn’t been eating. :(

So it’s a liquid, and given once per day. It’s made for dogs (like everything seems to be), and is given to cats off label.

It worked within 3 days. It was easy to give because it’s liquid, but Frosty didn’t like the taste after a while. He managed to spit it out a few times, but it’s definitely easier to spit out a pill.

The only “side effect” I read about was neurological, like head shaking and lip smacking. Frosty did smack his lips in attempt to spit out the medicine, but it only happened for a few seconds right after he took it. He was fine for the rest of the day, and didn’t exhibit any such symptoms any other time. I feel like it was more of a taste issue than neurological. But I guess they have to put the warnings on the bottle by law if enough owners report it. Perhaps they could also work on the taste...

I felt like it worked for us. I sent the rest of the bottle to @JL and Chip so hopefully it helps her cat. Hopefully she will share her experience with it as well.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted oh his progress :bighug:

Thank you and I do hope @JL and Chip report in on how it works in their case.

How expensive is it?

The Mirtz works for Gizmo but not consistently. If I give him a dose and then wait a week or so before the next dose he does fairly well with it as long as he isn't nauseated (or otherwise not feeling well). Any more often and it just makes him agitated and temperamental.

I wanna say it was $50 for a bottle from the vet? We didn’t use all of it :( we probably used a little over half in 3 weeks. He was on 0.4ml per day. He was 14 lb.

(((Ana))) Like you, I feel the need to give back somehow. This board gave me a lot longer with my girl that I would otherwise have had. You have learned an amazing amount about Cushings and I'm sure you'll be able to help someone who is getting overwhelmed with it. The information on the High Dose forum does need an update. We've had so few people try Vetoryl in the years I've been here.

I know, I promised you to update it, and then Frosty got sick. I need to get my stuff together and sit down and try to write something up. I had a whole plan in my head and now I totally lost track of what I was gonna do. Maybe before the end of the year? Lol. I know that's a long time but at least that gives me a deadline . It’s on my very very long to do this. But please tag me if there’s a member who has a cat with suspected or confirmed Cushing’s. I would be happy to share what worked for us.

I believe Vetoryl was a huge help for Frosty, and I definitely recommend it as a first line treatment. Obviously he would have never survived surgery, although I considered it, but Vetoryl is less invasive and it works. It was particularly clear how instrumental Vetoryl was in his well-being after he was off of it for a month towards the end. His skin condition was the main reason I felt it was time to let him go.

Thanks again for all of your help, @Wendy&Neko ❤️

I think you have a unique perspective to share with other kitty parents that come with a cushings kitty.

Take time to heal and when ready, share Frosty's legacy with another grateful pet parent.
