There's undoubtedly left over depot action at play, but overall these green numbers are a good sign.
Gooooooooooooooooooo Gypsy!!! Defy the odds! :D

I'm guessing she may need a PM shot based on the way she's climbing. We'll see. If so, .5u would you say (if above 150)?

It's all that insulin I preloaded her with a couple of days ago :p

Note: I'm joking--I know it doesn't work like that.
Actually, there's more to that than one might think. The first TR protocol with Lantus called for an initial starting dose that would over dose the cat (think kick-starting the pancreas). The cat would remain hospitalized for at least the first 3 days of treatment so hypos could be treated immediately by veterinary staff. BG numbers were brought down quickly and kitty was then released and given a reduced dose to safely continue treatment at home.

In spite of that protocol's success rate, it was abandoned for the safety and practicality of the German Tight Regulation Protocol. The initial starting dose was half of it's predecessor for safety reasons. Because the starting dose was much lower, hospitalization for the first few days of treatment became unnecessary... saving the caregiver beaucoup bucks!

Anytime you see a blue BG number, feed a small meal of her regular low carb wet food. It may be enough to nudge the pancreas into pulling numbers right back down into green.

A lot can happen between the 116 @+5.5 (the last BG number I see recorded on your spreadsheet) and her regular shot time. See how things go before making any decisions.

Huh. That's pretty interesting on the initial treatments. My vet did keep Gyps for two days, but they wanted to check for ketones and monitor her. I don't think they gave her insulin until the day I was supposed to bring her home. Of course, the vet wanted me to start her with 2u of insulin and use a sliding scale. I think I did that for two days before some people here got me started.

Will do on the food. They free feed, but I'll put her over at the food bowl and sprinkle some fortiflora on the food if she's not interested.

Should I be testing more often? I was thinking we could back down to four tests a day. But I can absolutely test more if I need to.

Sliding scales have been successful using dosing methods other than what we use on the FDMB.

For Lantus? The vet started her with Lantus. But when I was on the juice a few years ago, they had me taking two shots of Lantus twelve hours apart (same dose) and then testing blood sugar before meals and taking Novolog on a sliding scale based on that. Glad to be off the 5 shots a day :-p

104 Preshot. So no shot tonight either, I'm thinking. Anyone disagree?
Well, If you can test her tonight , have plenty of test strips and higher carb food if needed, I would shoot. You have shot lower before ( even though you were giving some of us heart attack, LOL ) And saying this, I can't stay with you tonight so if you aren't comfortable shooting, I understand.

Oh, was it you that was on insulin before or Gypsy?

I'm so glad you decided to listen to the advice here. Did you get a chance to read "Dry Food -Please consider...I think Gypsy might be headed for remission. Kinda early ,but I've seen it happen! :D
There's a ton of Great info here. It's a lot to take in but little by little you will learn so much. We're all wishing the BEST for you & your Gypsy!

Take a deep breath & think Positive thoughts. You're doin Great!:) :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Gypsy got diagnosed about two weeks ago, which is when she started taking insulin (Lantus). But I was diagnosed with diabetes about five or six years ago (lupus went active and I was hospitalized, and combined with crap diet and steroids... boom. Happy birthday :-p ) I'm off the juice now. They had me on Lantus and Novolog. So when people here were saying that Lantus was long-acting and not to bounce the dose around, I kind of had an aha! moment :-)

I think she'll be okay, especially considering that my meter tests on the low side. And I'll be up at least a couple of hours to keep an eye on her. I'm going to put some more food down too.

Me too! And thank you :-)

Yes on the dry food. I started switching the other two monsters over to wet before Gypsy came home. And I've got some dry food in the house, but I got one that's lower carb (I had visions that someone--looks at Emmy Kitty) wouldn't eat wet) just in case. But so far everyone's been on wet food. I really think that had a big part in her improvement. The vet was a little surprised when I told her I was feeding Fancy Feast :-p

Yes, some have been successful using a dosing method for feline diabetics which incorporates a sliding scale with Lantus. The method is different than what we use on the FDMB, but it works. Actually, there are a few different dosing methods out there that work. We simply chose two methods that use the insulin depot to our advantage and ran with them.

Be sure to test her before going to bed. It'll give you a good idea if further testing is needed.

Oh, cool. That gives me more confidence in my vet. And I like her a lot--she's done Gypsy a lot of good with her hips and such. I think I'm going to stick with the SL, GS though--even though her method would work, I don't think bouncing between protocols is a good idea. Plus I feel like I'm FINALLY starting to get a handle on this. I'll just confuse myself if I switch again LOL
