Yesterday

Okay...the dentist says there is nothing visible going on in Squallie's mouth (I looked, he's right). Says some cats can suffer residual pain for a month or more, so he gave me 5 more days-worth of bupe - big doses, too, I may halve them. I gave him one of the full doses when we got home and fed him his breakfast; he is eating a little bit better, maybe not pawing quite as much, so I think the bupe is helping. He's also very hungry because brekkies was 2 1/2 hrs late! However, not hungry enough to finish his food. He has eaten about 1/3 of a 3-oz can. The dentist will call on Wednesday, unless he hears from me sooner than that. Obviously,, I am to call if he gets worse. So, fingers crossed...we shall see.

Thanks again to everybody for all the advice and support, I'd be even more of a wreck than I am, now, without you all!

Woke up from my nap to realize Squall was leaking diarrhea everywhere, rushed out the door to his regular vet, where I am waiting for x-ray and test results. Will keep you all updated when I have more info.

On the way home now. Massive constipation, gave him 2 enemas and if he doesn’t poop tonight he will need to go back in for another enema on the morning. The vet also gave him fluids.

Interestingly, the vet found a tiny little spot in the right-hand corner of his mouth that looks like a piece of bone that is trying to work it’s way out! Pretty much what I thought was going on with his mouth. I just wish the dentist I paid a small fortune to had been as thorough looking at his mouth today as his regular vet was....I’m a little PO-ed...My regular vet is sending a report to the dentist, letting him know what he found.

Still on the car and phone is being difficult, will post more once home.

I too would be massively PO'd, Lucy. Well, that (constipation) is definitely a side effect of bupe could explain why not eating - constipation plus mouth pain
I'm really glad they found something in his mouth - too bad your vet didn't call the dentist instead of sending a report - I hope this all gets resolved VERY quickly

I was going to ask at the dentist's this morning if they did a post-surgery x-ray, and I totally forgot. I'm thinking the answer is "no," though. He did get BAs after the surgery.

OH Lucy!!! That is exactly what I thought could be the case........ugh. And I think it's worth a call to have the dental specialist refund any $$ that you spent today to not get any answers!

Is Squallie on a AB which could be causing the diarrhea? And what will be done about the bone fragment? It usually can just be plucked out but you are usually talking about anesthesia again with cats.

Yes, now I'm afraid to give him the bupe in case it just makes the constipation worse! The vet and I think that it's probably the constipation that's been throwing him off his food, and coincidental that he's been pawing at his mouth, although probably all related in the big picture, if you know what I mean.

I'm really angry that the dentist didn't find the sore spot in Squallie's mouth. He certainly was nowhere near as thorough in looking as my regular vet was, and when he showed it to me I could clearly see it, so it couldn't have been THAT hard to find!

I wish! I already paid $143 for them to do nothing except give him some bupe. Cost me a further $357 to have my regular vet do the proper checking!

And I even specifically asked him if something like that could be going on; of course, he told me no, not possible. I don't think they'll give me a refund, sadly. He hasn't been on ABs since a week after the surgery. Thinking now most of his problems have been caused by the constipation.

Probably right about the constipation causing the diarrhea to squeeze out around it.

It's worth a call....... you never know. They need to be held accountable for not helping you and charging you......it makes me mad for you. And just mad........

Most of the time it's due to improper handling of the sample...especially when the rest of the bloodwork looks as good as Squallie's!

In rare cases, it can be an indication of previous bleeding.....Kind of like the bone marrow can't keep up making red blood cells so says "how about these instead"?... but his RBC is good so I think reason 1 is the most likely

Glad Bubba' resolved so easily! Squallie still hasn't had any luck, so I'm afraid he'll be going back tomorrow. His vet said he will give him another enema in the morning, and keep him there to keep an eye on hi, giving another enema around noon, if needed. *sigh* Poor boy, he hates going to the vet.

I'm not very happy about multiple enemas, either. I don't know what risks are involved, but it certainly cannot be pleasant, or very good for the patient! Of course, the alternative is worse, so I guess enems win this round. Still...

My favorite that has worked for Ollie to clear to diarrhea and prevent constipation, slow motility, PJ for diarrhea, Smokey to help motility and it's never failed PUMPKIN everyday mixed in breakfast I do not skip it. I

What is important is that the job gets done, he stays hydrated, he is eating and not throwing up.

I know how frustrated and upset you must be. Please know constipation is a common and "mechanical" problem that can be managed. My Rose needs routine enemas and my vet trained me to do them at home. I can't do too much for some of the other problems she has (kidney, arthritis). Hugs to you both as you get through this!

Just a wee bit with one meal. Smokey got 1/4 tsp in every meal and miralax in both overnight meals. He was never constipated except once when I cut the miralax out.

Olive gets 1/4 tsp in breakfast only, she goes everyday but stands there for 5+ minutes waiting for it to get out. She does not strain it just doesn't move on its own.

I'm so glad your vet found the issue! Now that dentist needs to step up and admit the mistake they made.

Constipation is no fun - may be TMI, but I am recovering from major surgery, and the pain meds stopped me up something fierce. I have total sympathy for Squallie. It is VERY uncomfortable. I didn't want to eat, either.

Cinco didn't like pumpkin, but he would eat baby food squash in his food, so that's how I kept him regular. Another trick to get things moving is a teaspoon of coconut or canola oil in his food.

Fluids should help, too.

Hi Lucy

His globulin is high which can be due to liver issues, infection, inflammation, or chronic or severe periodontal disease, cancer, or autoimmune disease.

High platelets are rare and might not have a significance but it can be due to iron deficiency and other things but his hematocrit and MCV are on the low side which you might expect to see with iron deficiency. Has he lost any blood? Are his poos black?

IBD and pancreatitis can also cause a high platelet count. You vet is going to have to solve what is going on.

Thanks for the reassurance, Carol. I have a civvie with a "slow system" who gets Miralax to keep things moving, but I've never dealt with serious constipation before.
