Initial diagnosis: March 2018 BG 444. Vetsulin 5 units am 5 units pm. 3 weeks later: BG 380 increase to 6 units am 8 units pm I know now that this is a very high dose but just dont know what to do. Rusty's SS is up to date now. I just dont understand today's highs and lows

The 6 u dose this AM gave you some decent mid blues. I suggest you stay at 6 u AM and PM for another couple of cycles. If you don't see a lowering of the nadir numbers into low blues or high dark greens, bump up to 6.5 u AM and PM. It's best to keep the same dose AM and PM until you're well into his good dose range and are fine tuning the dose. For a strong acting insulin like Vetsulin your goal is nadir numbers in the range of 90 - 110.

Thank you Kris. I just didnt expect the wierd swings when nothing really changed in regard to diet, routine, stress.
I've gone from feeling overwhelmed then optimistic to discouraged
Today he had a reading of I think, 145, 165 then jumped to 300's Is this a bad sign?

I just updated ss and before his evening meal & shot BG was 332. 1hr later 325, 1 hr after 268. Id already given him 7 U before I read your post. How long is a cycle?

I just went back and started to reread beginners guide for Vetsulin.
I see that I must find the "peak" so I can determine how long the insulin stays in Rustys system. Maybe that will help make sense of his daily readings.
Why is dose so much higher than expected? Is it dangerous? Im afraidbto try and lower it now

My Neko got up to 5 units of Vetsulin, originally called Caninsulin but rebranded. But we started out at one unit and increased slowly. Was 5 units your starting dose? That seems really high for a starting dose. Is he a big boy?

By the way, some cats do need more insulin than others. My Neko had two high dose conditions. She got up to 8.75 units of Lantus. Caninsulin wasn't lasting very long for her, so we switched. Shorter duration meant she was always sky high at preshot.

Finding the peak and duration of Vetsulin is a good idea. Then you can focus more testing around those peak times.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm a bit less anxious about hurting (or worse) poor Rusty. I will definitely find peak/ duration. It's been inconsistent but that might be a sign that I need to switch insulin also.
Rusty is a big kitty!
Yes he did start on 5 & 5. Then Vet increased to 6 & 7/8. His BG was 444 following vestibular syndrome incident.
He was tilting head walking in circles, Unbalanced. Vet mentioned pancreatitis and or tumor but said he wants to stabilize his BG before further tests. (???) Rusty's tilt, walking in circles etc, did improve but recently had another episode.
Thanks again!

Does anyone find it odd the PM dose is higher that the AM? Are those dose numbers coming from your vet?
Noah does three things; he is unregulated, he is prone to bouncing and his PM numbers are always lower than AM. I have him on a sliding scale, his PM shot is 2/3 what it should be. I find anything over 5 units never helps, starts the bounce again. Noah is not a typical cat as you can from his avatar, that's the fridge he's standing in.

Hi Noah & Me, Rusty's first dose by Vet was 5 & 5 then on 3rd week check ( I took him in every week for 3 weeks) Initial BG was 444
On 3rd visit it was 380 and vet increased to 6 & 7 (8)?
My vet does not advocate home testing and I havent had an appointment since I started testing & monitoring. Next week Ill be sharing my results.
Since this post, Rusty had another episode of vestibular syndrome(?)
so maybe this has impact on his BG and my hysteria!LOL
I so appreciate yours an others feedback, advice and personal experiences

Hysteria is my specialty. So you intentionally disobeyed your vet and started home testing, good for you. I do my spreadsheets in Excel and I don't feel qualified to consult on dosing but I am a Caninsulin/Vetsulin user. Canadian meters are metric so when I'm easily distracted, look a squirrell!, I have trouble with the math. Divide by 18, I remember when I was 18.
Keep home testing, it's the right thing to do. ;)
For your vet :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Anyone mind checking my onset peak, duration quesses?
Onset: hr 2 ?
Peak: between hr 5 & 6?
Duration: hr 8-10 ?
What do you all think about going down to original Vets dose of 5 5 tomorrow and few more days?
It seems that the duration on 5 was longer?
I let Rusty eat 4 times day 1/4 of his total amt of wet food (only high protien low or no carbs wet) Does this mess up his numbers?
Really appreciate the help.

You see in the top right where Alerts is? With every thread you start a new post in that thread will get you an alert. If you or anyone else posts in someone else's thread, each time someone adds to that thread everyone who has been in that thread gets an alert. Likes are included in that list, I have over 30 after just 18 months! You can undo that by clicking Unwatch Thread at the top. Some threads get really long, multiple pages.
If I'm in another thread and I want your attention for any reason I tag you. @Marie&HerCats RUSTY You should have gotten an alert for that.
I hope I said that right. What does this button do? Oops, that's Andy's nose. :blackeye:

Forgot something. Marco sleeps with his tongue hanging out like in your avatar. We used to pull our dogs tongue while she was sleeping Zzzzzzzz, it didn't do anything.
