Pleasantly surprised to wake up to a 209, she was 161 at +5 last night, I thought for sure I'd be looking at a pink number this am.

Asia continues to eat all her food at one sitting like a piggy cat, but she's a very happy piggy cat. :cat: I posted this late last night but posting again here:

Asia has been a piggy again today, eating food in one sitting and cleaning the bowl. Starting to think this is a symptom of something rather than she’s just decided to eat with gusto for the first time in her entire life. Would also explain why she’s eating her Toki truffles, I was shocked that she ate the first one and continue to be surprised she eats them each evening. I skipped cerenia shot again today in light of her not having one yesterday and eating so heartily today.

Does anyone know if T4 is something you have to ask for with IDEXX? Is it not part of a standard senior panel? My antech blood work seems to have it, but the IDEXX ones don’t. Regardless, I'm going to ask for next blood draw.

I'm sure there is some reasoning behind it, but the answer so far is because: cat! :joyful:

For Toki, only 2 more pills! :woot:

For Asia, a bunch, but she's eating the Toki truffles and I'm not having to pill her, thankfully.

From the last thread, sorry about that! Obviously I'm confused about what day it is

Haha, yes cat is always the answer! Maybe because they are nocturnal, they want us to be up all night with them lol.

Woo! 2 more! That's not bad at all! Almost there!

Hmm, not sure about the sudden intense appy. I hope that it's just her finally being a good eater and not a sign of a problem!

No worries, I just didn't want to have 2 threads bouncing up here.

I would have initially suspected them being bent towards nocturnal, but at least for my cat, she's not more active overnight, she likes to sleep next to me and that's largely what she does.

Unfortunately, at her age and with multiple organ systems failing, any behavior that is historically out of the norm, even if it seems cute or like a good thing, is usually a symptom of something going on. She's just never ever been a lick the bowl clean in one sitting kind of cat. Her style is "oh, there's food there, okay, I might have a little if I feel like it" and she grazes.

Interesting observation- last year when Trix was on ABs for a bit of a mystery infection (an gland issues and elevated WBCs but not sure if the glands were the source), her appy skyrocketed, too. Labs showed nothing other than her CKD. When she went off the ABs, about 5 days later her appy was back to her pre-AB appy. Maybe it’s a side-effect if the meds??

If you're concerned about a thyroid issue, with hyperthyroidism, you would see increased appetite plus weight loss and with hypothyroidism, you would see decreased appetite and weight gain. If I recall correctly, Asia gained weight at her last vet visit, right?

My civvie had hyperthyroidism, but he didn't have the increased appetite so it's not always a symptom.

What Amy said is a good possibility.

Thanks for sharing that, it would be the best possible explanation! I hope that is the case here, but still going to check that T4 next time to ease my mind.

I understand. I think that I saw your sig previously and must have had a bit of reading dyslexia and read her age as "12" instead of "21". Wow! I wonder how old that is in cat years? I hope that it isn't anything serious causing the sudden appy...let us know how things progress.

I read up on it, and yes, the symptoms don't line up exactly. She's eating a lot and maintaining her weight, she did gain a good bit since FD started, but she's about at her normal pre diabetes weight if not a smidge more. It's just an obvious/easy thing to cross off the list as she hasn't had it checked in some time.

So glad that Asia is eating very well - that's such great news! Correct me if I am wrong, but did you also just start her on Bupe? I thought I remembered that, but I cannot remember for sure! Wondering if it could be that her mouth feels a bit better? I only suggest that because I feel that's why Darwin has become such a piggy too! He has always been quite a good eater, although picky, but now that he is feeling well and his mouth is healed - he's eating with major GUSTO!

That being said, I have seen kitties with hyperthyroid eat like piggies and lose or maintain their weight. They often do lose, but not always.

It would depend on what lab panel they selected to run. We elect to run a T-4 with all of our senior panels (dog and cat), but they may have selected a large panel that did not include a T-4. Some vets I have worked for also did not include a U/A with their senior panels - not a great idea, IMHO.

She started bupe in December, so I'm not sure that would make sense, but could be. Or even, if she had any sort of mouth infection brewing, the antibiotics might have knocked that out for now and it's bothering her less? Paws crossed it's something like that or a side effect of antibiotics.

Weird, the past 2 vets I've been to haven't run it with their senior panel. So odd considering how common it is in older cats. They have done U/A but I'm not sure if it's a matter of routine vs she has a history of them plus diabetes. No brainer there.

Thanks! :bighug:

PMPS 98, shot in the scruff as an experiment to see if slower absorption happen, should know soon. Didn't seem to make a lick of a difference for you @Moose & Rae :joyful: Don't have high hopes, but can't hurt to try.

Meatbeard the pirate continues her piggy chow fest. Eating fast and furious all day.

Asia ate her Toki truffle pill this evening. Yay! Toki did not, but tomorrow morning is Toki's last pill!!! :cat:

Ha, you were right! It was anecdotal! Maybe it will work for Asia though, we will see.

Meatbeard the pirate
lol!!! Love it.

Yay Asia being a good girl and eating her truffle! Hopefully Tiki will eat his last one tomorrow.

It's one of her newer nicknames. Since self grooming becomes optional when you're a cat of a certain age and I add water to her food, she gets a little meat dab stuck on her lower lip/chin area often times. We started calling her meatbeard the pirate and made up a song to sing to her (even though she can't hear) when we wipe off her face for her.

I'm not bothered, I will pill Toki tomorrow, it's the last time and she's done! Hooray!

Not at all enough data to say scruff shot success, but to say it's extremely rare to have a green preshot that doesn't involve Karo somewhere in the cycle is an understatement. I did a bit of reading, couldn't find solid research, per se, but seems that the scruff is a less vascular area, so that would explain slower absorption. I will keep shooting on her sides unless I get a green preshot at PMPS and then the experiment continues.
